AU - Flashback: Age 5
Vincent's tiny limbs moved rapidly as he bolted through the forest, robes tearing on branches and occasionally tripping over a root or rock. He righted himself as fast as he could. He threw what meager charms and potions he'd stolen behind him whenever he could to deter his pursuers.

He knew who his father was.

Everyone knew.

Mother was going to send him away.

He was scared. More scared than he had ever been in his brief life.

Hildy could defeat anyone short of Lords Thor or Odin, but the house of Volstagg was too far away. He had only one place to turn.

The voices behind him drew closer as he came into the opening near the den. He took to the hill and threw himself into the entrance to Lady Rahne and Lord Hrimhari's den, framed by the tree's roots. "Lady Rahne! My Lord!" He squealed out a cry for help, out of breath, and already tattered and bruised from his flight.

"Of course you're coming!" Moira declares.

"Now girls, Da has to talk to Heimdall about it first." To make sure Vincent would be allowed back in after the visit.

The grin consumes Vincent's face, turning to nod affirmatively to Moira. "Wonderful." A thought occurs to him. "Will... will it be alright with Lady Moira? My father is..."

"Dr Doom isn' welcome on her land. Neither was my father, but I certainly was," Rahne says warmly.

"Granny ist a great scholar of bloodlines," Danielle declares. "But she cares little about them when comest it to that sort of thing."

A voice booms, politely, from the entrance to the den. "If it please the Prince and his Lady.. I can only part myself from the Rainbow Bridge for so long."

Heimdall awaits.

"And we art ready to return there with you," Hrimhari says, stepping up. "I merely wished to discuss with thee how many there would be. I wish eight to go and to return at the appointed time."

Heimdall glances over Hrimhari's shoulder, the physical gesture being a courtesy, as the keeper of the bridge need not be limited by what mere eyes can survey.

"The boy is to accompany you then?" There is a pause, but devoid of any judgment or skepticism. "His placement in your pack's care is deemed fair by Lord Odin. His place in Asgard, if any... is less certain, for now. The way to and from the bridge will be safe passage, provided he stays with you."

Another pause. "I cannot see the future, Prince of Wolves, but should anything regarding the boy change in your absence, you will know it before you would need cross the bridge again. I will see to it."

"My thanks," Hrimhari says with a nod.

And, after his briefing to the pack, as he gives each time he accompanies his wife and children, it's off to Midgard for the family and Vincent.

As much as the pack has his love, Vincent is still nervous. He packs a small satchel of precautionary supplies (mixed with the greatest of care, and under explicit permission from Lord Hrimhari), and slings it over his shoulder. He makes the appointed rounds with the other children to bid the other members of the pack well, and then the group is off.

His pace shifts slightly, and he moves closer to Lady Rahne when Asgard looms into view.

Rahne has her yellow dress on, and wraps an arm around Vincent. Most of the other children stay close to her as well, but three year old Douglas scampers about as far as Mummy and Da will let him.

As they approach the bridge, Heimdall stops, finding an arrow with a message wrapped about its shaft. His gaze narrows, and he picks it up, reading its contents. He gives a firm nod and passes it to Hrimhari and Rahne.

In delicately penned script, a short message is on the parchment.

Care well for my son, as I could not.

"The bridge is ready. Travel well, and return safely."

The Prince and his Lady read it solemnly, and then it time to go to Midgard.

When the bridge is crossed, they step out onto the path leading up to the Muir Island Research Center on a breezy night. Two figures with graying hair, a man and a woman, come out quickly to meet them.

In hindsight, Vincent will wish he could have made some sort of profound observation about the shift from the other realms to Midgard.

But all the small child can do for now is take note of the stars being in different places, before turning his attention to the two approaching humans. He keeps close to Lady Rahne for the moment.

"GRANNY!" The puppies all scream in unison. And then the hugging starts. The man and woman are nearly pounced on by the five, and then there's a warm embrace between the woman and Rahne, a handclaps between the man and Hrimhari, and vice versa.

"And now who is this?" the woman asked, seeing Vincent with surprise.

"Mummy, this is Vincent. It's a bit of a long story."

"Vincent," Hrimhari says, "This is Lady Doctor Moira Ann Kinross MacTaggart and Lord Sean Cassidy."

"Neither of whom care much about being Lord or Lady," Sean says wryly. "Good to meet you, lad."

"Granny is Midgard's Greatest Physician!" Danielle informs Vincent.

Vincent watches the outburst of affection with wide eyes. It was just so... lively. It was as if they were at Volstagg's home.

He bows after introductions are completed, watching the humans. "I... am pleased to meet you both. I'm sorry Lady Rahne and Lord Hrimhari could not let you know I was coming with them."

His head turns to Danielle, then back to 'Granny' Moira.

"Truly?"

"It's all right lad."
Granny ruffles Danielle's white hair. "So sweet." She smiles to Vincent. "The point is arguable. On two occasions, I've been given something for greatly advancing medicine."

"Now come on in before we freeze to death. Sean and I can't go standing outside all night in December."

Vincent nods and walks inside with everyone else, holding Rahne's hand. The home is so unlike anything he's seen before, he manages to forget to be nervous, staring around in curiosity.

He stops gawking long enough to look up to his caretakers. "What should I say to them?" He nods towards Moira and Sean. "It... it doth be a long story indeed."

It's clean, warm, shiny and cozy, and there are computers here and there. The puppies settle in on a rug and a couch

"We'll handle it, dear," Rahne says. She meets her mother's eyes. "In a nutshell, Mummy, Vincent's been a playmates of the girls for more than a year. A few months ago, there were, well. Essentially, there were people with pitchforks, and Hrimhari ordered them off our property." She smiles. "And he didn' even need a shotgun."

"It was very brave... even if it was in the Forest... and especially since he didn't have to...."

Vincent adds his bits to the telling, edging closer to Rahne once more. There's gratitude in the motion though, rather than the skittishness he's been displaying.

"No-one else would have taken me in."

And yet, where those months ago, those same words would have been forced out sullenly, now they're said with shining eyes as Vincent looks up at his benefactors.

"Only thing to do at a time like that," Granny says with a nod to her son-in-law.

Rahne keeps an arm around Vincent. Hrimhari just nods pleasantly and then slips away to change.
"I wouldn' normally suppose ye had those sort of problems in Asgard," Granny said bemusedly. "It always seemed the benefit in balance to having to put up with all those trolls and giants and goodness-knows-what. 'Tis not mutation issue is it? They never seem to have problems about that."

Vincent takes a deep breath, then lets it out with a slight huff before Lady Rahne can have to explain it.

"My father doth be known to Midgard as Dr Doom. Mother had decided to send me to live with him, once it was known. I ran."

He bites his lip, having gotten the admission out quickly.

He looks amongst the gathered adults. "Is it safe to see more of Midgard while we are here?"
