Superman was back.  A kid had seen him, cape in the wind atop the Planet building.   Other reports corroborated this, but Lois had made no effort to leave her desk to go look.  He was back., which meant he was likely going to show up at her place in the next forty-eight hours and want to talk.  Fine.  Let him.  It didn't mean that she was going to be pleased when he did decide to darken her door.  Superman being back was a fantastic thing and Lois, like any good citizen of Metropolis, was glad of it.  Clark Kent being back, however, was a different story.  Irritation is what tends to happen when a guy leaves his girlfriend for months with very little reason as to why.

Clark closed the door behind him and followed her into the room. "Its great to see you" he said softly, looking at the roses in his hand he reluctantly placed them on the coffee table. "If you want to give me a piece of your mind, I get it. Let me have it" he said, motioning like he was going to let her clock him.

She rolled her eyes at the hand gesture.

"Clark, we both know that if I try to punch you---even if you deserve it, and you do---I'd only break my fist. And yelling at you doesn't do any damn good. You're stubborn, Clark. I just want to know how a man concerned with doing the right thing can possibly think that taking off for months without telling his girlfriend where he'd be, what he'd be up to, and if he was actually going to come back is somehow okay. And before you give me some line about the burdens of being Superman, shut up. I'm not just dating Clark Kent; I'm dating Superman, too."

She picked up the roses and walked to the kitchen with them to get a vase.

"I would have gone with you."

"I went to Krypton, Lois. Or what was left of it." He said, quietly. "Thats why it took so long. It took me nearly a month to get there, and then another to get back" he said shaking his head "and that was at my top speed. Then there were a few worlds I passed that needed my help, so I got a little side-tracked..."

He shrugged, feeling like a bit of an idiot- then his expression changed. "Oh! I almost forgot, I brought something back- well I brought a lot back, but this is for you" he said, pulling something out of his pocket. I was a small, angular object. Not quite diamond shapes, not quite a prism, made of a cloudy azure crystal. He stepped closer to Lois, describing it. "I scanned it with equipment from the Fortress... its not dangerous." He handed it to her, and it began to emit a glow. Soft, haunting music began to play. The tune was alien, yet hauntingly familiar. "They called it a music glass," he said, his voice wavering. "It- I think it was my mother's"

Lois started to argue with him about distance not mattering and that she knew damn well he was capable of carrying her, but when he procured the music glass she stopped short. As it glowed and then sang in her hand her eyes widened with curiosity and surprise and she was, as she rarely was, silent.

"Clark..." She didn't know quite what to say. "You have nothing of your mother's. I couldn't possibly...I know how hard it is for you to find connection to them."

"I thought about keeping, but then I realized it would end up sitting in the barn or at the Fortress. It deserves better than that. It deserves you." He shrugged. "You're the best thing in my life, Lois. You always will be."

He pulled her close to gently, letting her spin so her back was to him. He hugged her close, his arms draped loosely around her waist. "I think my mother would approve. Just promise you won't sell it on ebay" he said, as he planted a kiss on her neck.

It never failed to escape her notice that she could feel the strength of him when he embraced her. He was solid, truly like steel, but just under it was something soft and as her back pressed to his chest and kissed her neck, she sighed.

"I would never sell it on eBay, Clark. If I were going to do something like that I'd have swiped one of your capes ages ago." Nevermind that she did actually have one of his capes. For her own personal enjoyment. She may or may not have slept with it while he was gone.

"Are you back now? Not leaving me again?"

"It's really not that much fun around here without you to get irritated at, Smallville."

"I guess I better stick around then. And I've thought up a few new ways to irritate you.." he said, his lips brushing against her ear as he whispered.

"Oh you have, have you?" Lois turned herself in his arms so that she was facing him. "I find that interesting as I have been working on new ways to do the same to you."

Clark leaned forward, pulling her to him. It was their first real kiss since he had returned. It was long, and it was deep and it was passionate. Neither of them seemed willing to pull away, so the moment held. Clark eventually relented, pulling back. "Wow" he said. "I knew I was missing something." He looked down at her and spoke in his most official Superman voice. "Well Miss Lane, clearly there's no time to waste!" In a heartbeat he had spirited her into the bedroom and laid her on the soft covers...
