Ruth and Jay had agreed to meet at Top Dog in Berkeley at 4:30.

Ruth entered at 4:25 in her favorite denim skirt and a blue blouse, sat down, and set her books aside primly.

She made herself not look at her watch again.

	Ruth 'hemphed' slightly. "Well, I appreciate your putting up with it for us in a world that can't appreciate classic literature, then. Laurie was the most handsome and generally terrific boy in the history of Victorian-era books for little girls." And she hugs Jay tighter as the general wholesomeness-fest on screen continues. Ruth fights hard against an uncharitable thought, the question of whether Mrs. Jill is very into anything beyond cheap liquor. That was completely inappropriate to think, even though she'd never say it. She just clutches Jay a little more.
Eventually, she's laughing a little at the haircutting scene. recalling her own childhood attempt to act on... very outdated information regarding hair donation. She buries her face in Jay's chest. "I would like to point out how clearly it is cool when they do it."

And she happily snuggles as they continue to watch, as eventually there are more serious parts than just wacky hijinks.

And eventually, when they come to Laurie's little rant of frustration and envy culminating in "And if Beth had a lover, I would despise him, too. I have always known I should be a part of your family!", Ruth finds her fingers kneading harder into Jay's shoulders and arms.

But hard feelings are sorted out, and happy endings come amidst the tragedies -- Ruth always cries a little with Beth dies. She can't help it.

Ruth blushed. "He came to mind because he believed that... once things reached a certain point where two people... might be together for... for the long haul, that it was about time they saw each other naked so they knew what they were getting into. His work was often atypical of it's time but that's, you know, not the important part. The important part is having a serious talk about we want in... y'know, certain regards."

And Ruth, who has had sex ed in both regular school /and/ multiple years of Sunday School, can't believe she's still blushing. How ridiculous is this?

I mean, we've been dating properly for almost two years, and you've never made me feel like there was anything wrong, no matter what people were saying... and I know they were." She was pretty sure he understood: that she took it all so seriously and so measured because that was who she was, not because what she felt was some kind of attractionless affection. He kisses her gently. "And I want you... when you're comfortable with it, when the time is right. I know you're looking forward to it. I am too... but you're worth waiting for. I know you believe sex is healthy, and an important bond for a married couple... and I want that. I just also know that rushing into it isn't healthy, or anything else good. When we get there, I want it to be as meaningful as possible."
