Brother I is watching...
Two days after Batman's meeting with the Justice League, the Dark Knight returns to his headquarters and begins the nightly (or morning, rather) ritual of removing his armor and going over the night's work. The appearance of a new designer drug in Gotham has been his top priority, as well as keeping the family of a visiting diplomat out of harm's reach has taken up most of his attention. Robin has been doing the legwork of watching over the family, but Batman knows he will need to step in soon.

Meanwhile, he finds that the new Wayne Enterprises satellite is working as intended and he notes where Superman, Green Lantern and other members of the new Justice League are as they move about the planet. He couldn't allow this new group to operate unchecked, no matter how much he wanted to believe that Clark and the others would be able keep things in line. Rumors of the Justice League's return were being met overall with triumph, though there was hostility in other places. Across the world, media outlets vocally floated the idea that the time had come for every country to create their own Justice League to keep America from policing them even further.

Batman files away every scrap of information, knowing that it will all be necessary at some point. I

It always is.

Alfred arrives from upstairs, his polished shoes clacking softly against the stone of the steps as he arrives.

"Master Bruce, Princess Diana wishes to speak to you. Shall I send her down?" he asks.

Bruce grunts, and switches to something else on the computer screen.

"Very well. I'll send her down presently." Alfred says, returning the way he came.

Both sticks are done before Diana realizes it and Bruce is covering the areas where he stuck her.

"My father was a doctor. I wasn't fond of needles either, especially when it came to flu shots." he says. "I got over it around the first time I started immunizing myself against spider venom.

Spider bites make needles a non-issue." Bruce says, pulling his cowl into place. As he does, the change occurs.

Batman stands ready to charge out into the Gotham night.

"Let's go." he rasps, all traces of Bruce Wayne discarded like tattered clothing.

It was almost disturbing how seamlessly Bruce Wayne disappeared when Batman was full in place. She'd never actually seen the switch happen before.

"Lead the way. This is your city and your villains. Once we get there though, I'm full in."

Batman heads toward the car, motioning for Diana to follow as the platform the vehicle is on rotates to face the entrance to the cave.

"I think the Scarecrow is our best lead. Biochemistry is his field of expertise and I learned from an informant that he's been looking to add to his crew recently." Batman says.

"He's got a lab in a warehouse in the Narrows from the intel I've gathered. Once we get there, let's see if we can get a lead on whoever he's working with before we attack. I want to shut this down at its source." he says.

Once Wonder Woman is in the car, the top closes over the both of them and he accelerates, rocketing them toward Gotham City and the Bat-Signal that lights up the heart of the city.

"Do we know if he's actually been able to add to his crew?" Diana wondered briefly if the increase in carriers in her city were a result of that recruitment drive.

She said very little else on the ride towards the city. She was getting into her zone. Once they arrived at the warehouse, she let her eyes look at the structure, looking for suitable entrance.

"There's a light on the far left," she noted. It was dim, barely visible and clear that the occupants were trying to keep their presence hidden, but she could see the way the shadows played. "Is there a side entrance?"

"There have been some additions, but I don't have exact number. Lots of hoods in Gotham float between whichever inmate happens to be out of Arkham this week or the next." he says.

"Three entrances. One in back, the front and the skylight in the ceiling. I'm going in through the ceiling. Deal with the guards in the front and back as quietly as possible, while I head inside. Come in when you hear the gunfire." Batman says, passing the building before doubling around to park five blocks from the dull, brown, two-story brick building in the Narrows.

"You'll know the Scarecrow when you see him. Don't underestimate him, Diana; his fear gas is potent, and the immunization we only protects against the last nine variations. He could always have been too busy to create a new batch, but I wouldn't count on it." Batman says.

The top of the vehicle slides open and Batman hops out, heading toward the building. This whole thing felt strange to him, not having Robin or even Nightwing at his back.

Get over it. Diana is here, don't screw up. he thinks.

Without another word, he pulls his grapnel gun and fires a line to the rooftop nearby and starts heading for the warehouse.

Out of the car, Diana moves towards the back entrance first. Sticking in the shadows she scouts things out for a moment, the two guards keeping watch over the dimly lit entrance. One was armed, while the other didn't appear to be. She waited for a moment to get a good idea of their dynamic before moving in. She went for the armed guard first, moving almost silently up behind him and locking him into a sleeper hold.

"Hey!" The other guard had turned just in time to see Diana lay his buddy on the ground, out for the count. Diana wasted no time in reacting and as the other guard moved to engage her, she delivered a solid punch right to his face, breaking his jaw.

Batman creeps up to the skylight and looks down into the building. He sees several gun-wielding thugs inside and he can hear a melodramatic tenor inside, going over his plan.

Scarecrow.

Batman leaps through the skylight, his hands already releasing the smoke bombs in his hand as he hurtles toward the floor of the warehouse.

Pop! Pop! Pop!

Smoke fills the room and Batman methodically takes down one gunman, then another as the smoke spreads. Theere are curses and yells as Batman moves about the room, creeping along.

The smoke clears and Batman scans the room.

He curses himself as he realizes the trap that he's walked into.

The twenty ninja, as one, silently draw their swords as they look upon the Dark Knight. They form a circle about him and hold their weapons ready.

"Welcome to my parlor, said the Scarecrow to the Bat. You've fallen into my trap, Batman! My partner told me you would, and you have. He wants an army, and I will give him one.

In return, I will overcome my greatest fear. /You/!" Scarecrow taunts.

"Kill him!" he yells.

The ninja attack Batman en masse.

Diana had just gotten the guards in the front down---which also went too smoothly--when she heard the popping of gunfire. Tying the guards up, she ran straight for the source of the gunfire.

Diana will find Batman in the center of a throng of ninja the moment she enters the building. Swords flash, chopping and slashing as the ninja try to bring down Batman.

The Dark Knight parries blows left, right and center, lashing out with a kick here, a bone-cracking fist there and moves to somersault over another ninja to get better positioning.

Scarecrow notices Wonder Woman and is momentarily caught by surprise.

"Certainly more comely than you normal partner, Batman! But even she won't save you. And you can't save Gotham!" Scarecrow says, turning and running through a door directly behind him to go deeper into the warehouse.

Ninjas certainly weren't something she expected to see when dealing with a drug case. Diana jumped into the action just the same, blocking slashes with her vambraces, levelling kicks as she went. One ninja tried to come at her with force and found out exactly what happens when a man plows into a mountain. He collapsed to the ground unconcious as Diana cracked another two ninja heads together.

Batman tosses shuriken at several of the ninja, which only a couple dodge. The several who are hit drop their swords, allowing him a moment to knock them senseless and even use one as a shield when his fellows slash at him.

In under two minutes, all twenty ninja are defeated. Batman is /not happy/.

Too slow. he thinks.

"Wonder Woman, we need to find Scarecrow!" he says, turning to run through the door and down the hallway after him.

"Good thing I can smell cowardice."

Diana paused a moment while Batman took off after him, guessing the direction Scarecrow would go. She turned to go a slightly different direction, hoping to cut him off before he could reach an exit.

As soon as he was in range, she whipped out the lasso.

Scarecrow ran through the warehouse, leading Batman on a merry little chase and readying his fear gas weapon, mounted on his arm. Despite being terrified out of his mind right now, Scarecrow is also exhilarated as he runs.

Batman is the only person who truly makes him feel afraid.

He can hear the Dark Knight's footsteps getting closer and closer, and he makes one last right turn, running out of the back door, where he has men at the ready.

He erupts from the back door and turns, firing his fear gas, even as the lasso seeks to bind him.

Batman bursts out of the back door and catches the full blast of the fear gas in his face, inhaling it even as he shoulder checks Scarecrow to the ground, driving the wind from him and cracking two of the villain's ribs in the process.

Diana's lasso binds Scarecrow fast and he screams in pain as Batman rises, shaking off the fear gas. He's glad he immunized against it and that Diana didn't get hit with it, either.

Hoisting Scarecrow from the ground with one hand, Batman slams him against a wall and waits for Wonder Woman to arrive.

"Talk. I know who hired you, but where is the fear toxin and the antidote?" he snarls.

Diana wrenches the lasso tighter, making sure he can't escape and that the bite is painful.

"Don't even try to deceive us. I will find out the truth and I will make you suffer."

Scarecrow tries to fight the lasso's influence, but he finds that he can't.

"Gotham Water Department, Tank 42-A. Set to go off in less than twenty-minutes." he says. "You can't reach the bomb in time...especially since the bomb in New York is set to go off in ten." Scarecrow says, laughing.

"The antidote is inside the building in the office upstairs." he chuckles.

Gotham Water Department is twenty-five minutes from here by speed limit. Even with his driving, Batman knows he'd barely make it there in time.

"Where, exactly, is the bomb in New York, Crane? How is it set up?" Batman asks.

Scarecrow gives the location of the bomb and it's exactly set up, trying to resist Wonder Woman's lasso the entire time.

"Wonder Woman, use the Justice League teleporter and get to that bomb. Contact me the moment you arrive and tell me how it's set. I'll help you disarm it." Batman says.

"As for /you/..." he rasps, looking down at Scarecrow.

"You're fortunate we have other things to do." Batman says, punching the man out cold.

"Go, Diana. I'll diffuse the bomb here while I'm helping you."

With Scarecrow out cold, she releases him and nods at Batman. "Be careful, please." There is concern in her voice as she activates the teleporter and is gone, reappearing in a flash at the bomb.

"Batman...we have a problem."

Batman handcuffs Scarecrow to a railing outside then races back into the building to confront the bomb. He hears Diana's voice and opens the channel on his communicator.

"Describe it to me." he says, beginning to work on the bomb on his side.

Batman notes that the bomb on his side has all been stripped to be red, rather than black. It's annoying, but he continues to work, going over the layouts of every bomb he's ever seen in his mind as he works.

"Find the right-most wire, then count two to the left and clip it." Batman says, doing the opposite of what he's telling Wonder Woman on his side.

"Did the count speed up or slow down?" he asks.

Diana did as instructed.

"Sped up. I think that means third wire from the right, but...I don't dismantle bombs as frequently sa you do."

Re: The Following Night

That was odd. The count on Batman's bomb slowed down when he clipped the wire on his. He'd seen this type of set-up before, by Triad members in Hong Kong, years ago.

The bombs were rigged at the same time, but the wiring was done opposite to fool bomb technicians.

Bruce explains this to Diana as he considers the next move.

"Both bombs will need to be shut down simultaneously or they'll both explode." Batman says.

"Follow what I tell you to the letter." he says next, giving her a set of steps to disarm her bomb while he works out his own.
