New Year's
The beginning of a New Year, a time for new hopes, new experiences to come. A time to reflect on times past, remembering fond memories happily and trying to put less pleasant thoughts and experiences in the past.

It is a time of renewal, a time of rebirth. And for much of the world, it is a time of celebration. This is no less true for the super hero set as anyone else. If anything, they just have that much bigger of things to look forward to.

"No, I'm not, Hope. You remember Mickey Rayner, right? She was at Thanksgiving.

Someone killed her last week. We got there too late to save her. I haven't called in a couple of days because I had to fly out and talk to her parents in person." Rex says sadly.

"Hope, she was just a /kid/. Seventeen years old, same age as Nic. I just keep thinking about what I'd do if I got that call saying that Nic was gone...and I can't imagine what her parents must be going through right now." Rex says, looking down at the floor.

"I couldn't go out tonight and act happy after that. I'd wanna break something." he says.

"What is there to say, Hope?" Rex asks quietly. "I failed as a leader. I'm supposed to take care of my people and the moment I turn my back, Mickey's...just gone.

Wendi couldn't take it. She bolted right after we got there. Not that I blame her a bit. I have three people on my team that aren't even twenty. What the /hell/ am I thinking, Hope?" Rex asks.

"I...I need to take Wendi, Nic, Steven, Will and Zandor off the team. It'll cripple the JSA, but I can't expose them to stuff like this expect them to march on without bein' affected.

Stuff like this builds up in bad ways and then..." Rex can't even finish his sentence.

"You did not know that this was going to happen. It is not your fault. You did not murder Mickey, some psychopath with an axe to grind did. These things...these things, as tragic as they are, happen Rex. You can't blame yourself. Mickey wouldn't have wanted you do that. What you can do, is make yourself stronger from it. So something like this never happens again.

Mickey loved you. She wouldn't have wanted you to beat yourself up like this.

And Rex...do you really think that Wendi, Nic, Steven, Will, and Zandor are going to let you take them off the team?"

"If I explain the reasons...maybe they'll get it." Rex says quietly, but there isn't any conviction behind it. Like as not, Will and Zandor would hold him while his sister beat some sense into him. Steven and Wendi would cheer her on.

"Our pictures are always gonna be one person short now. Mickey loved the holidays, Goddess. She decorated the brownstone for /everything/. I have no idea how we're gonna pull off any of the holidays coming up without her." Rex says.

	For once, Rex is nearly speechless. "I'd like that very much, Hope, but only if you're sure. You don't have to if you're not absolutely sure." he says, kisses her gently.
