Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas @ 10:08 pm

[info]dc_holiday:

Each year toward the end of December people come together with friends and family to celebrate and exchange gifts. The atmosphere is light, merry and there is plenty of cheer to go around. Holiday music fills the air while bright colorful lights light up the nights. Mistletoe is placed in strategic locations and people are willing caught under it.

It's a time of celebration, even for superheroes.

All Hallow's Eve @ 11:15 am

[info]dc_holiday:

All Hallow's Eve, or Halloween as it has been come to be called, is a popular holiday with children and adults alike. It is a holiday that had its roots in the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain or Summer's End. Samhain celebrated the end of the "lighter half" of the year and the beginning of the "darker half".

On this evening the barriers between this world and the Otherworld were believed to be thin and the spirits, good and bad, of the dead could pass through. The spirits of the family's ancestors were welcomed in while evil and bad spirits were warded off by the wearing of masks and costumes. The costumes and masks disguised one as a harmful spirit and avoided harm from others.

It was also a harvest celebration and time to take stock of food stores for the winter. Livestock were slaughtered and the meat prepared for storage. It was the final harvest of the year and the crops were then stored for the winter. Celebrations included bonfires and tales of the family's ancestors.

It was a celebration of the dead and of the harvest.

Today we dress up in scary and not so scary costumes and masks and go door to door for candy or attend costume parties. It is a night for revelry, pranks and fun.

Love Is in the Air (open to all) @ 02:40 pm

[info]dc_holiday:

Drink to me, only with thine eyes,
And I will pledge with mine ;
Or leave a kiss but in the cup,
And I'll not look for wine.
The thirst, that from the soul doth rise,
Doth ask a drink divine :
But might I of Jove's nectar sup,
I would not change for thine.

I sent thee late a rosy wreath,
Not so much honoring thee,
As giving it a hope, that there
It could not wither'd be.
But thou thereon didst only breathe,
And sent'st it back to me :
Since when it grows, and smells, I swear,
Not of itself, but thee.

Valentine Vignettes @ 07:11 pm

[info]dc_holiday:

I arise from dreams of thee
In the first sweet sleep of night,
When the winds are breathing low,
And the stars are shining bright.
I arise from dreams of thee,
And a spirit in my feet
Hath led me -- who knows how?
To thy chamber window, Sweet!

The wandering airs they faint
On the dark, the silent stream--
And the Champak's odours
Like sweet thoughts in a dream;
The nightingale's complaint,
It dies upon her heart,
As I must on thine,
O belovèd as thou art!

O lift me from the grass!
I die! I faint! I fail!
Let thy love in kisses rain
On my lips and eyelids pale.
My cheek is cold and white, alas!
My heart beats loud and fast:
O press it to thine own again,
Where it will break at last!

Backdated to Christmas Day @ 09:04 pm

[info]jealous_heir:

Henry and Cassandra Cain sat opposite of each other at the dinner table in his dining room.  They were midway through a conversation, although it was strained by Cassandra's consistent lack of trust for her half-brother.  Something seemed off to her.  Her eyelid were growing heavier, and her stomach churned.  Then finally, she threw up.

"Are you feeling well, Cassandra?" Henry asked in rhetoric.  A smile was plastered across his face, and he set down his glass of wine.  "No, of course you aren't.  Oh, what a shame.  Not only are you dying, but so is your beloved Bruce Wayne.  Or, should I say the original Batman?  It should be any minute now that a person posing as the assassin that failed to kill Bruce Wayne before, finishes that job.  I really must say, this is quite the Christmas day."

Cassandra lost consciousness after Henry finished speaking.  She died shortly after, courtesy of a group of thugs taking out some anger on a returning Batgirl.  Within the next hour, news hit the radio, television, and papers about the death of Bruce Wayne.  A photo of his unknown killer -- known to the League of Assassins as Lady Vic -- was posted in the papers.  She was not, of course, the real killer.  One of Henry's trusted employees was just posing as her to do the job.  The next day, Cassandra's body was found, and news hit the stands about her.

As far as Henry was concerned, it was a fine week indeed.  And nobody even knew he had done anything.

Zoe spent Christmas Eve and Day with Michelle at the local shelter helping out. Zoe helped to cook and serve a holiday meal with other volunteers, and kept the peace if anybody got out of hand. This year there was more to serve, and gifts for the children. The unexpected bounty wasn't questioned, only accepted and passed on to those who needed it.

There was no way that Keith was going to miss his chance to give Marissa her first Christmas present from him in person.  That was the reason he had gone to Gotham City in the first place.  So, after texting Marissa to find out what Christmas party she was expected to attend, Keith dressed up for the occasion and grabbed her necklace, which he put in a Christmas jewelry box.  He arrived at the party in a fancy Gotham hotel and waded through the press and the guests to find his one and only Marissa Wayne.

Labor Day - JSA @ 07:10 pm

[info]dc_holiday:

The weather was absolutely perfect for holding a cookout.

Tables had been placed on the roof of headquarters and the large grill fired up to get nice and hot. Burgers, hot dogs, sausage, ribs, corn on the cob, pasta salad, salad and fruit salad were just some of the food available to eat. Soda, water, fruit juice and other beverages were on ice.

The JSA worked as a team to prepare the food. When they were ready, they carried it all outside and started their celebration.

It was a day of rest and relaxations for those who put their lives on the line for others.

What Makes a Dad

God took the strength of a mountain,
The majesty of a tree,
The warmth of a summer sun,
The calm of a quiet sea,
The generous soul of nature,
The comforting arm of night,
The wisdom of the ages,
The power of the eagle's flight,
The joy of a morning in spring,
The faith of a mustard seed,
The patience of eternity,
The depth of a family need,
Then God combined these qualities,
When there was nothing more to add,
He knew His masterpiece was complete,
And so,

He called it ... Dad

In Remembrance @ 12:33 am

[info]dc_holiday:

On the last Monday in May the country pauses to mourn its war dead, the spirit of redemptive sacrifice is extolled and pledges to American ideals are renewed. Flags are placed on soldiers' graves and those who sacrificed their lives for their country are remembered.

The holiday first began in the 1860s to honor the Civil War dead and took place near the day of reunification after the war, it has since come to encompass all war dead. People observe this holiday by visiting cemeteries and memorials. A national moment of remembrance takes place at 3 p.m. local time and another tradition is to fly the flag of the United States at half-staff from dawn until noon local time. Volunteers often place American flags on each grave site at National Cemeteries. The National Memorial Day Concert takes place on the west lawn of the United States Capitol where music is performed, and respect is paid to the men and women who gave their lives for their country.

Families and friends come together for barbecues and cookouts. Kids rejoice at the opening of pools and knowing that summer has begun and school is ending.
