Break Out
Keith sat in his cell with restraints and a device on his neck that prevented him from using his sonic scream.  They took all of his equipment and locked it away in a safe.  His dad was on his way to visit him, which wasn't something Keith looked forward to.  Killing the Artist quickly became Keith's biggest regret.  He had screwed over not only himself, but his entire family.  How was he supposed to make this up to them?  He didn't know, and he was just about ready to give up on everything.

Once the two are comfortably seated, the limo pulls away from Heathrow airport and out into the English countryside.

"I'm glad we made it this far. I'm not sure what we'd have done if Oliver had shown up before I had." Robert says.

Pause.

"So, how close are you two?" he asks, as though he's only faintly curious rather than extremely eager to know.

"Oh, me and Dad? We used to hang out whenever we got the chance, until Mom decided we needed to take some breaks. We kinda stopped hangin' out so much this year, though. Except when I asked him to keep training me so I could be Green Arrow."

He wondered something, then.

"How come you never came around?"

His brother's question brings a sad smile to his face. He can hear from Keith's words that he respects and loves his father. He doesn't like Oliver, but he hates to damage his brother's image of his hero.

Still, he asked.

"Keith, Oliver turned his back on me. He's known about me since I was six years old, but he chose to disown me. I saw him once, through a window, when I was a kid. He and my mother argued about something, I don't know what.

All I know is that, at the end of the argument, he turned and left. I never saw him again, except for the rare occasions we had TV or I was allowed to read newspapers." Robert says, looking out the window.

"Slade told me a lot about him, and about...Roy? Is that your brother's name? How Oliver took him in, and then Mia and taught them the art of the bow. Mother rarely spoke of him, except to tell me that I looked like him every now and then, and only when she was drunk, which was rarely.

I went to Star City once and I saw him on a stage accepting an award for philanthropy. I stood less than ten feet from him as he went to get into his limo and drive off. He didn't recognize me." Robert says, a very, very minute tone of hurt in his voice that he probably doesn't even hear.

"After that, what was the point? If I showed up and claimed to be his son, I'd be called a liar. He'd probably pay me to disappear so that I don't ruin his life with the family he has. Or he'll think I just want money, which is the furthest thing from the truth.

The only thing I want is to know my family. Oliver doesn't have to be part of that equation." he says.

"What, no. That can't be true. He accepted Connor, and Connor is kinda like you. His mom isn't Mom. Dad would never just abandon you! There has to be some other reason."

He couldn't accept his father being portrayed in that light. But even Keith didn't know the full story, so there wasn't much else he could say to defend his dad.

"I wish there was, Keith, but I lived it. Oliver turned his back on me. My mother took care of me and made sure I had what I needed to live, but it was really just existing.

And then Slade came into the picture and he...he was good to me, Keith. Sometimes, I think he needed a son as much as I needed a father and he taught me not only /how/ to kill, but /why/." Robert says, reflecting on what Slade meant to him.

"I spent a lot of time wandering the world after they left me on my own. I've lived hand-to-mouth my whole life, but I learned how to be /good/ at it. It was only recently, meeting Jane, then Mia, and now you, that I learned there's a bit more to it." Robert says.

Keith stays silent. He doesn't like that Robert thinks that way about their father. He doesn't like that Robert put Slade up as a good father figure. He doesn't like that he doesn't know why Dad never mentioned anything about Robert. He wants to believe that Robert's mom is a liar. He wants to believe it's all Robert's mom's fault.

But he can't say that. He wouldn't dare say that. Not after all that Robert has done for him. This was the only person Keith could currently rely on and trust. No way was he ready to screw that up.

So he just kept silent and waited for the ride to end.
