The Dead are from Mars, the Living are from Saturn
Since her arrival on Earth some months back, Jenn had kept a relatively low profile, the only people she had really seen much of regularly were "Uncle" J'onn and J'anna.  Recent upheavals, with the awakening of J'anna's mother and J'anna's own death had only served to isolate the Saturnian princess further.

Home was on the other end of the solar system, still eclipsed by rising civil war.  The news was grim.  Her father had yet to recover and the rebels attacks were growing more and more fierce.

For the moment, she flew over the city, on her way to see J'onn J'onzz.  She hated to intrude upon his private moments, especially now with the death of his daughter, but she needed something familiar.

"Children are the creation of their parents. I say these things because of you. What, are you going to pretend to care now? You should have cared all those times you shipped me off to Shayera and Carter as a child instead of having to look at me. Did you think I was stupid? I knew. I knew every second that I was never good enough for you because I wasn't K'hym. A FATHER WHO LOVES HIS CHILD DOESN'T SHIP HER AWAY. But you never even wanted another kid. Does Mom know that? That you're the reason she was in that hospital? Does she know how you sent me off to others instead of caring for me yourself?"

J'anna snorted at Jenn.

"Please. Think about it. When we were kids, who got his attention? It wasn't me. It was always you. My father was so in love with your mother that he could pretend you were his but he couldn't even face me."

The corpse Martian seemed to shake.

"All I ever wanted was a hug but you couldn't even fucking give me that. But, that's okay. I'm the bigger Martian. You may not give a shit about me, but I'm generous. I'm going to show you peace."

J'anna lunges at J'onn.

J'anna's words hit hard, both for their viciousness and for the truth behind them.

Try as he might to deny it, J'onn knew that she was right.

So taken by surprise by her words was he, however, that he didn't even have time to act in his own defense.

"J'onn!" Jenn cried out, surprised by the sudden violence. She was so used to being acutely aware of the emotions of others that the actions of some kind of emotionless being in J'ann's skin got past her radar easily.

She fired a beam of psychokinetic force at J'anna. Just enough to stun, in case her friend was in their somehow.

The blast was enough to keep J'anna from ripping out J'onn's heart (physically) but just barely.

"What, can't stomach the truth? He STILL has a thing for your mother, you know."

J'anna turned her dark attention to Jenn.

Jenn had always known that her parents held little love for each other, that their marriage had been more about healing the divide between white and red Saturnians. Something she was the ultimate progression of.

She readied another blast. "J'anna. You are my friend. Do not make me do this. Please."

J'onn used the moment to recover. "Leave her alone, J'anna. Your quarrel is with me."

"And at LAST he takes responsibility!"

The second blast to J'anna does almost nothing as the girl moves slowly back towards her father.

"But it takes Jenn being in perceived danger for you to give a shit about what happens. Why? Why wasn't I good enough? WHY?"

J'anna seemed like she was going to attack J'onn but turned at the last second and went for Jenn instead.

J'anna may only be half-Martian and Jenn made be a full-blooded Saturnian, but Saturnians were never as physically powerful as Martians to begin with. The difference is still enough to make J'anna stronger.

She tried to dodge, but took the blow with a resounding crack that spun her head around. She gathered her wits as best she could and struck out with a blow of her own.

"Jenn!" J'onn cried out. "J'anna, no!" He raced forward, desperate to put himself between the two girls.

"Protecting her as you always did, nevermind what might become of me. Never good enough, never the first daughter, never never never. Go back to your precious family!"

J'anna shifted all of her focus on J'onn, coming at him full force, hand extended to take his heart.

J'anna was an emotional dead spot, but Jenn could feel J'onn's fear for her safety, fear for what had become of his daughter, and his great love of them both. She could feel the fear of the humans below who were witnessing this battle.

Against any other foe, she might have been able to harness that fear as a weapon, absorb and project it. Here, she, princess of Saturn, daughter of Jemm, here, she was clearly outmatched.

It shamed and angered her.

"J'anna, please, no!"

J'onn knew going intangible was useless; J'anna could just as easily match it. He barely had any time to react at all, save to move his heart elsewhere in his torso just before J'anna struck.

Her hand went into his chest...but found no heart and she screamed before pulling back and preparing to go at him again.

"I am sorry I must do this..." Jenn began, "but a daughter of Saturn must ever be prepared to make war."

She fired another psychokinetic blast at J'anna. She still wasn't sure if it was enough to hurt her... but at least she could keep her attention off J'onn.

J'onn pushed himself away, still utterly unwilling to strike his daughter.

So many lost and the dead rising...

He activated the emergency League signal device located in his belt buckle.

"Emergency transport, one Martian, one Saturnian. Lock on and transport immediately."

The blast did little, but it did slow J'anna down just enough for the transport to lock onto Jenn and J'onn. As J'anna hurtled towards J'onn for a killing blow...they simply disappeared.

The two materialized on the tele-pad of the largely disused JLA watchtower.

Jenn realized, when her sense of awareness reasserted itself, that she was breathing heavily. She sought to control herself.

"How... how was that possible?"

J'onn shook his head. "I know of several possibilities... not one of them good, and one in particular is far worse..."

He shook his head again. Those things J'anna had said... he knew them to be true.

And that hurt, deeply.

He prayed to his gods for a second chance.
