Zoe crouched in a shadow, watching a body climb out of a window onto a fire escape. Fire escapes out to be outlawed, she thought. What good were they to anybody minding their own business? They were practically welcome mats to thugs looking for a place to rob.

"Pay attention," she hissed at GK nearby. If she didn't know better, she'd think his mind was a million miles away and not on the job at hand. Maybe she /didn't/ know better. Last week he was moping over some guy and now he wasn't.

	"The place won't serve milkfed veal. Mom doesn't do overpriced. And if it doesn't look like they get along, lunch will be over faster than a dinner. If they do, then I won't have to hear what I'm doing going out with a rich kid when I know better." Or wonder why she was suddenly concerned about what she was wearing or how it would look to a date. 	She snorted. There was little doubt that GK's uncle was a nice man. She'd made no bones about her protectiveness of her mother. "Good to know." "Hungry?
