A personal mission (Jai).
Keith wasn't dead.

This knowledge pounded through Marissa's head every second of her waking days, most significantly when she was dealing with Keith's family.  Dinah had made the gesture of inviting Marissa to come out to be with the family for the funeral preparations which meant that she was surrounded at any given moment by someone who should know that Keith was alive.  Dinah was easy to fool; the woman's grief was palpable and she voluntarily kept herself distracted by alternately working on Mia's wedding and the funeral.  Oliver never acknowledged her, which was fine.  Men have their own ways of grieving.  She hadn't had much contact with Mia, either, but that was by design.  Marissa still hadn't forgiven herself for letting Mia die so it was already awkward.  Sin, however, had been harder to shake.  The small woman seemed to be looking right through Marissa at every turn.  Keith was right; she was creepy. Marissa was fairly certain she knew something was wrong, which made Marissa faintly paranoid.  Keith wasn't dead.  She knew it and she really couldn't sit around and do nothing about it.

Left alone in Keith's room, Marissa found one of his old cellphones.  A few moments later she had his contact list and there was a particular number she was looking for.

I need to talk to someone about Keith. Star Tower Hotel restaurant 4pm. -MW

She had been generous with the time, but she knew Jai West was fast so Marissa was already there waiting when she sent the text.

"It helps that you really didn't unpack anything at all." Tim says.

"How's Keith?" Tim asks, testing the waters.

Tim's question wasn't "testing the waters;" it was flat out cannonballing right on in. Marissa pretended to do a sweep of the room for missed items and didn't say anything for moment. She had options here. They involved lying or telling Tim what she knew so far. And Tim had a great radar for a lie. He was better than Bruce, really.

"I don't know, short of him having a pulse and being very evasive about telling me what the hell is going on." She turned and looked at her brother. "Keith called me from a pre-paid cell phone a few days ago. He refused to tell me what was going on, but called mostly to tell me he was alive and taking care of something and that he had to do it alone. I caught up with his best friend today and found out that right before his so-called death, Keith received something from the Artist.

"I'm going to be going after the Artist, Tim."

Tim doesn't say anything for a bit, letting her speak. At her final words, however, Tim takes a deep breath.

"No, Marissa. You aren't." he says calmly.

"He's out of your league. I'm not saying that to be cruel. I'm saying that because I've got toe-to-toe with him and come up short. Twice. He nearly got you a few months ago and he /did/ get Mia.

You and Jai West are going to get yourselves killed if you try this."

"And we may well get killed if we don't try this. Tim, I get that this is personal for you because he killed Giselle, wrecked your life, and has been more or less hunting down the rest of the women you care about. What you don't get is that this is personal for me, too. The shot that killed Mia was meant for me. He stalked me. He killed several young women in my city, on my watch because they resembled me. Now he's taunting my boyfriend. This isn't going to stop, Tim. Not until he's stopped and while I understand and respect that you would like to protect me, truth is I'm not afraid to die and I'm willing to do whatever it takes to stop this maniac."

She looks up at him, her voice calm and her demeanor even.

"You can either help me do this or you can step aside. Stopping me is not an option. This is something that I have to do."

"I /can/ stop you if I have to, Marissa." Tim says warningly.

"This isn't just a bad idea. This is a terrible idea. If something happens to you, Bruce will be crushed. So will Terry. Everything your mother went through will be for nothing." Tim says.

"Every night I suit up and go out into the absolute worst areas of the most dismal and dangerous city on the planet. I get kicked, punched, shot at, and in one notable scuffle, choked. I've broken bones and played hurt for weeks after because the darkness and monstrosity of Gotham's underbelly doesn't give sick days. Something could--and does--happen to me every day. And do you know why I do it? I do it because my mother never backed down. She believed in truth and she believed in a better Gotham, that people deserved to be safe and to have an opportunity to thrive. She didn't back down and she didn't raise me to back down, either.

"The Artist is a monster and he very well may get the best of me, but I can't just back down because it might get me hurt. His victims don't get the luxury of hiding out; their protector shouldn't either. I have to do this. If I don't, I might as well hang up my gear."

Damn it. She was right. Even if he does tell Bruce, it'll just push her to do this more and she wasn't going to let him talk her down. Well, if /that's/ how things will be, Tim can't let Marissa, and Keith, do this alone.

"We do this my way. You follow my lead. You go off script, I turn you over to Bruce and I make /sure/ you never put on a cape again." Tim says, his eyes boring into hers.

"I'll do the legwork and bring you in when I've got something. In the meantime, you focus on finding Keith." Tim says.

"Let's go, before we're late." Tim says.

Blah blah, off script. Sometimes she wondered if Tim had forgotten that they were Batkids, which meant there wasn't a script save for "and the bad guy ends up with broken bones." But she didn't say anything. She simply nodded. This was a victory. She'd savor it later.

"I'm pretty sure you can't be late for your own plane," she commented as she grabbed her suitcase. "Does your alien know you're running off to do something insane?"

"Her name is J'anna and she'll know tomorrow. I left word with a friend so she'll get the message. I'll call her before I go home and tell her about what's going on." Tim says.

"And now I have confirmed your girlfriend's name. Excellent. You really should talk to me more. Sharing is caring." She seemed a little gleeful for a moment before sombering up again.

"So what are we doing? You said you had a case you could use my help on."

"A little girl who lost her mother needs someone looking out for her. Her mother...was a friend of mine." Tim says. Stephanie had been much more than his friend once, but he couldn't tell Marissa about that. Not now.

He hadn't even really told J'anna about the girls that came before her, except Giselle, and he'd only told her about Giselle when he'd had no other choice in the matter. This with Stephanie were more complicated.

"I need to find this little girl and make sure she's all right. She lives in Gotham, which is why I was going in the first place." he says.

"No, she's not, but...I was very involved with her life before she was born. I hadn't seen her mother in years and a few months ago, I saw her again as one of the dead." Tim says quietly.

"I failed Stephanie and Giselle. I know what it is to grow up without parents. I got lucky when I met Bruce. Lots of kids don't." he says simply.

"Stephanie was my friend and I couldn't help her, but I can help her daughter."

"Yeah, I've got a lead on her adoptive parents. Steph was sixteen when she gave birth and she gave her daughter up for adoption. I've kept track of her over the years, just...because." Tim says.

"Come on, let's go." he says, heading for the door.

"Once we've done this you really should consider talking to your present girlfriend about the torch you're carrying for your deceased ex." Marissa followed him to and then out the door, heading down the hall with her bags.

"Whichever one is keeping you from actually loving her. Don't argue with me. We work along the same lines inside. I think we stood too close to Bruce once or twice." At the elevator she looked up at him.

"I'm not being mean. I'm your sister. I'm trying to look out for you because for once you have something good and I'd like to see you enjoy it."

Inside the elevator, she took a deep breath.

"We go out the left door. I'm presuming your car is over there?"

"Yeah, it's there." Tim says shortly, looking around a bit silently.

"They aren't keeping me from loving her." he says quickly.

"I just...I hurt people when I left with no reason behind why. I was in a bad place and I didn't let people help me when they could have, Marissa. Then I kept secrets that ended up getting Giselle killed and got J'anna killed, too." he says.

"Some days, I think would be better to just go it alone again, like I used to. No one gets hurt that way, except me. I can handle it when it's just me, but other people shouldn't pay for my screw-ups." Tim says.

"That asshole Nekron got people killed, Tim. Stop trying to take credit for things that really have little to do with you. Badguys, villains, murderers, psychos, and creepy alien things...they happen. J'anna probably would have been killed by one of those zombies even if she hadn't been with you. They were taking down everyone. It had nothing to do with you."

Marissa headed out straight for the car, pausing only briefly at the door of the car to look at him.

"She loves you and chooses to be with you. Pushing her away--pushing away anyone you love--that's a hurt worse than anything a murderer or a psycho could do. It's a different kind of death. Just a thought."

With the door unlocked, she slipped into the car.

"I suggest taking seventh to the air field. Faster."

"I'm not the only party doing the pushing, Marissa." Tim says, slipping into the car with her.

"J'anna's got her own things to deal with and she won't let me help. I don't know /how/ to help her. I don't know how to help Lian or anyone.

I've never been this helpless before and I really, really, hate it." Tim says.

Tim had no reply to that. He knows it's true, but saying it aloud, even acknowledging it, means that he really does have a problem. A problem that he has no clue how to fix.

"The Artist will be hard to catch. I heard he gave you and Batman trouble before. Do you think Keith is looking for him, too?" Tim asks.

Marissa notes that, once again, Tim avoids the problem. That's going to be ugly, eventually.

"I'm pretty sure that is exactly what Keith is up to." Because Keith killed him once already.

"Then we need to find him before he gets himself into anymore trouble. He's already flirting with federal charges if anyone else realizes he faked his death. I don't know what he was thinking, but it wasn't a great idea to go with on the fly.

Jai West didn't handle it so well." Tim says, starting them on their way to the airport.
