It isn't my birthday...
A brown paper package was just inside the door on a side table when Zoe returned home after an afternoon at the Star City library researching old newspaper archives. It bore her name and address, but no return address and no postage stamps.

Michelle wasn't home from the office yet, so she had no audience to ask her what it was or who had sent it. Suspicious nature taking over, Zoe hid it under her bed and ignored it until late that night. She carried it up to the roof and carefully opened it under the tiny beam of a penlight.

Inside she found a locked leather case. A plain white envelope contained a key on a chain. If this was Angie's idea of giving her more guns, it was too public. Zoe's condition was that none of the Suicide Squad dealings ever touch her mother or her home life. She didn't think Angela was so careless when she could have called Zoe to her office for a delivery.

All thought was gone when she opened the case and found a pair of wrist mounted guns. With the new weapons were boxes of ammo. Even in the low light, she could tell they were not an off-the-rack item. They were sized to fit her and she had an idea they would feel natural in her hands. Someone had gone to the trouble of arming her with a specially made item of the sort she wouldn't have thought to ask for, and provided ammunition to use them right away.

She'd talk to Angela about it tomorrow. Maybe.

Zoe didn't like it much either, but she'd been doing this long enough to know it would come back around. They just had to wait for the right moment.

"C'mon," she mouthed at GK and headed after their quarry.

He followed. Dark figures carried dark objects under dark coats. Shadows were everywhere, so they found a convenient one.

It was hard for him to follow what was going on, really -- did one figures Heart's Desire suddenly turn to Respect in mid-conversation, as his voice was raising a little. That was never, ever a good sign.

Convenient enough to hear muffled voices getting louder. They didn't even bother to take it indoors where there would be no witnesses to clean up later.

Zoe didn't have to understand what was said to know what was happening. Somebody was shorted on a purchase. You don't steal from dealers, it was an unwritten law. Dealers had people they answered to, and even if the messenger hadn't been the party, that was who got the blame first.

It would not be healthy at all to be on the street when this went down. They needed to be higher up and harder to catch if there were more lackeys around. She turned to GK and pointed up.

GK nodded, and looked to one of the fire escapes, uncertain if that were too noisy.

Zoe nodded and looked up as well. It /would/ be noisy. There wasn't enough street noise to explain it away. They'd have to go inside and get to the roof... or go a block down and try one of those buildings. By the time they made their way back on the roofs it could be over. What fun was that?

She decided they'd take a chance and go into the next building for the stairs to the roof. They'd still have a view and if they could get over to the right roof, it would be better.

With that thought, she touched GK's arm lightly and moved into the next shadow to retraced their steps.

He noticed and followed her. The voices started to escalate by the time they got up. "I think one of them's feeling, um, dissed"

She gave him a look before realizing what he meant. Sometimes she forgot, if she wasn't looking at him in the face, that he wasn't from around here. Sometimes he brought it home with a few words. "The problem with drops is that you don't know what's there until you pick it up and check," she said in a low voice as they found better positions to see what was happening across the street and had a escape route in case the confusion didn't last long enough for them to get away before being noticed.

"The messenger brought back the package and whatever was in it wasn't right. Now, you and me both know he didn't do anything with it from where he got it and here, but his boss don't know it. If he can't make it right, he's gonna be dead as an example. They're doing it right out there so that means the money man is somewhere else and we're looking at a couple of low level idiots. Still, it'll cripple the dealer for a while and maybe something will happen to make it worse for them."

It's conceivable that an elite private school in Seattle isn't the best preparation for beating up traffickers in the Triange, but GK tries hard! He listens to her and nods. "Right. Got it. So...what do we need to take into account here."

"We got lots of company down there. "If it looks like somebody's gonna get hurt, we disrupt their little meeting and let them run. Then we take off so we don't get caught."

"That sounds like a good pla--"

Their heads were close together, to talk, less than a foot apart.

Suddenly, there's the rush of air against their faces as a gunshot passes between them, about six inches from each of their noses.

GK's in too much shock to even look as something on the next rooftop falls hard.

Zoe flung herself back from the whoosh of air. "Holy @#$%!" she breathed, looking around at the hard thump from the next rooftop rather than the direction the shot came from. A rookie move, but she couldn't help herself. They were dead if the shooter was aiming at one of them and tried again.

Only the sounds of the meeting below breaking up jarred her back into action. "We gotta get out of here!"

How visible the body clutching a sniper rifle is on the next roof is hard to say, but one is there.

"Yeah!" And he scrambles with her to head out.
