Into Each Life A Little Chaos Must Fall
All in all, Alina is pretty fond of the desert. It’s local, beautiful, and full of large empty spaces where she can sling her spells about without worrying that something terrible is going to happen. She favors a particular bluff that’s hard to get to if you can’t fly and gives her a good view of the surrounding area – the last thing she wants is to accidentally turn a wandering idiot into some kind of crazy monster. Today though, she’s not out here to practice. She’s out here to try an experiment.

After the whole “Blackest Night: Redux” thing, Jaime Reyes had settled himself back into his life, albeit without the scarab and the super-powers. He hadn’t given up the good fight or anything, he’d made sure she knew that, but he wasn’t going to try and pull Khaji Da off of Dinah either. And really, Alina’s just glad that he’s not dead and putting his life back together. That’s not what she’s doing out here. What she’s doing is trying to find Black Beetle. Just because Jaime’s not dead anymore doesn’t mean that Alina’s going to let Black Beetle get away with murder.

Today, she’s just looking to find him, find some way to trace him back to his lair. It’s hard, because time-traveling enemies suck goats that way; but Alina has determination on her side, and power to burn. She’s also got food, water, shelter, and both a fully-charged cell phone and a YJLA communicator in case she burns a little too much.

(Of course, if she were being properly responsible she’d have someone with her to make sure she didn’t burn out, but if she were being properly responsible she wouldn’t be doing this in the first place.)

Settling herself into a comfortable cross-legged position, Alina begins to meditate. Her magic, never far out of reach, wells up inside her and swirls around her like thin water or a thick wind. It tugs at her hair, her clothes, her butterfly mask, but it also seems to sense that she’s serious today. It’s almost inquisitive in texture, though not in the polite way; more like the way a dare-devil wants to know if a friend needs someone to hold their hand while they jump off the roof and into the pool. She visualizes an empty sphere between her palms and pours her magic into it.

I want Black Beetle. Alina focuses on her memories of him, the details of his armor, the hatred in his voice when he said Jaime’s name, the way he’d taunted her the few times they’d fought. I want to know where he is. I want to know what he’s doing. I want Black Beetle. Find him for me, lay all his secrets bare. Find me his weaknesses, show them to me. His scraps, his fragments, his trail and his lair. Find them. Bring them to me.

Her magic doesn’t much like being focused like this. It fights her, but she’s used to that, and feeds more of it into the imaginary sphere. She can do this. Her palms begin to tingle like she’s holding a ball of millions of tiny pins, but she breathes deeply and feeds it more magic.

Then she hiccups, and vanishes with a crack like somebody hitting a home-run.

"Doing that now. I text this one guy. It's the fastest way to get them out here. Cops take forever in this part of town."

"We should take a look around just in case. And -- don't worry. I have a boyfriend -- I just have to say again that you look great. The mask works perfect with the chaos theme and stuff. Very Mandlebrot, and it's so nice to see a girl in the business who knows how to work colors."

"Friend on the force? Ooh, that's handy. Haven't managed that one myself yet."

Alina beams at him. "Thank you so much! You're pretty much the first person who's said anything that I didn't have to prompt first! I was beginning to wonder if it was either going over people's heads or was so obvious people found it embarrassing. I can't take credit for the color scheme though, I borrowed it off of the third Blue Beetle."

"No, it's perfect. The others must have just been too preoccupied. And there's definitely no crime in taking style lessons from a hot guy."

"Well again, thank you very much." Alina hides a laugh behind her hand. "He didn't exactly pick the colors either, but I'm not going to object to that description."

She gestures at the thugs. "So is this a 'wait for the cops to show up' situation now that they've been texted, or are you working the mystery man angle?"

"They can wait by themselves. Avoids over-exposure. I do a good makeup job, but not that good. Shall we, Miss?"

"Kaotik, please," Alina says with a grin. "Lead the way, Sliver."

She could restrain her curiosity about why he'd chosen that as a codename until after they didn't have an audience anymore.

And off they go. He suggests a nice building upon which to climb up the fire escapes to the roof. "Give us a better view."

"That it does," Alina says, following him up the fire escape. "Plus, an opportunity to pose dramatically against the skyline. That's always fun."

She cocks her head to the side. "So, why Sliver? If it's not too nosy of me."

"Like the little bits of glass that stick in your skin? Nothing but a minor annoyance, but they can hurt like hell? It seemed apt enough when I need to think of something to say that wouldn't reflect back on my folks."

"Judging by those thugs back there, I think you've gotten better than a 'minor annoyance'," Alina says. "But I don't have much room to talk. I picked mine when I was, like, eight."

He grins. "Thanks. And hey, yours works nice, so that's just good forward planning. When I was eight, my folks wouldn't let me take anything but basic self-defense and a little gymnastics."

"I'm thinking about changing it," Alina says, making a face. "The spell-it-with-two-K's is kind of nineties, you know? Plus, like I said, I was eight, and at risk of getting stuck with 'Kidnap-Bait'."

"Just brainstorming ideas right now," Alina says. "Thinking about putting up a suggestion sheet at HQ. The only other real idea I have right now is 'Mariposa', and that's mostly because of my mask.

"It's a great mask. I've got to admit, I'm thinking about how it would look to paint it on, all Fractal-like, but obviously, yours is better for actual useful mask-purposes."

Alina cocks her head to the side and visualizes that. "The fractals would take forever, but I think it'd look pretty cool." She chuckles. "I actually had to make it look like face paint earlier. I ended up in the middle of some basketball game. Fortunately, blue was a major part of the team color scheme."
