Cait couldn't put off any longer. It was time to grab the shark by the tail and tell her parents of her engagement to Ty. She had thought long and hard about how to do it and the best way seemed to be that she tell her mother first and then tell Arthur.

She fully expected Arthur to go ballistic and be banished from Atlantis again. Of course that was if Arthur didn't lock her up and keep her under lock and key. No matter how it went it wouldn't end well. For a few moments she had thought about taking Pippi with her, but that would feel too much like cheating and Cait knew she would feel guilty afterward for manipulating Arthur.

Taking Ty along with her was totally out of the question. On a good day Ty had tenuous control over his powers. Around Arthur that control was almost non-existent. Ty already brought Atlantis to the surface and almost destroyed it in the process. This time she was sure Atlantis wouldn't survive.

Cait entered Atlantis with the usual fanfare (she hated it) and went to find her mother. Divide and conquer. Or at least divide and have an ally to keep Arthur from killing her.

"The usual wrestling with the Council. Your father wasn't in the mood and to keep things calm as long as possible, I agreed to sit in the meeting this month." She hugged her daughter a second time. "So tell me, is everything all right? You look..." Mera tilted her head, holding Cait out to get a better look at her face "...tired. You're not sleeping well?"

"Wrestling with the council is never fun," Cait said. "Too bad we can't just dissolve it."

Cait smiled. "I'm fine. I'm getting enough sleep and have been sleeping well. Work's been busy and the Titan's have been busy as well."

"That would do it." She paused. "How is Ty? Is he well?"

Cait's smile grew. "Ty's great. He's doing more and more research and we see his mom often."

There was a moment's pause.

"Mom, Ty asked me to marry him. I accepted."

Mera blinked at her daughter. "I think we're going to need something stronger than tea." She put an arm around Cait and started for her private rooms.

Cait walked with her mother. "Are you upset about it?" Cait asked. Sometimes it was hard to tell what her mother felt about something. Arthur, and Cait for that matter, wore their emotions for all to see. Mera had always been a little more reserved.

"I wouldn't say I'm upset. I'm concerned."

She closed the door behind them and motioned Cait to sit. Her tone of voice was selected with great care. It had taken so much effort to bring her family to an uneasy truce and she would not allow it to be torn apart again.

"You're so young and yes, I will say it, your father is going to create another trench in the ocean floor. How you planned to handle the situation?"

"I know Arthur is going to go ballistic," she said. "It doesn't matter when I tell him. His reaction will be the same whether it's today or in ten years from now."

Cait sighed and fell into a chair. "I was hoping you would help with that."

"Ty is a lovely young man. /I/ was hoping that giving your father and the Council a few years to see how much he provides for your happiness would ease everyone into the next step if it happened. I wasn't expecting you to rush into anything." Mera rubbed the bridge of her nose. "Persuasion is often more compelling when used sparingly."

"I didn't exactly plan this and I didn't expect Ty to propose to me," Cait explained. "I wasn't going to tell him no."

"I understand how that can be," Mera assured her softly. "It is only an engagement, right? You aren't here to set a date?"

"It's only an engagement," Cait assured her mother. "We haven't even discussed the when. We're not in a rush or anything. If we were we would have eloped."

"That is a very intelligent decision. An engagement will provide your father with time to accustom himself to the idea. In the meantime, your attention to your duties here will allow both the Council and the people to see you aren't choosing the world above over your home." Mera smiled, much more relieved than she wanted Cait to know. "If you ever /do/ elope, let it be your secret until your father matures a little more."

"I will do my duties to Atlantis," Cait said. "I won't neglect them. I wouldn't worry about us eloping. I'm sure even suggesting it would set Ty off." Something Cait tried to prevent as much as possible. She still had dreams about his manifestations.

Cait raised a brow. "So never tell Arthur?" she joked.

Mera laughed. "I still have hope for him." She reached out to take Cait's hand and squeeze it. "Believe it or not, he is showing signs of relaxing."

She sighed silently at the mention of Ash. "She has not. Have you had contact with her?"

Cait didn't think Arthur would share the happiness, but he deserved to know. "If you would I would appreciate it. It's not going to be easy."
