Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Entry tags:cindy lord, joey mason

An open invitation, with just a couple regulations.
Much as she loves the other places she has homes, especially Chicago now, part of Cindy will always be a California girl. She enjoyed her years at St. Elias's immensely. So, y'know, it's hers.

So here she is, in California. And she's got a quick meeting with another superhuman trust fund brat.

"Joey," she says. "How good to see you."

"...Bringing her up without being able to remember her name was a mistake, Joey," Cindy says calmly.

"You are going to learn where and with whom your approach is appropriate. You're going to learn it, or you're going to regret not doing so. Because I was already a weaselly little bitch, and now I have a giant space snake occasionally talking in my head. But everyone knows how professional I try to be. I've worked hard on it. Everyone knows how I wouldn't go all Judith Martin on someone unless it was really necessary. And of course, without compromising my integrity that way, how could I possibly make your life a living hell?"

Cindy smiles. "Except that if I don't want to have to ruin myself by going Judith Martin on you -- because unfortunately, I do have to such things out loud, where all my sweet little teammates might here -- I do have a man who can do fascinating things with all kinds of elements. And I do happen to know that good old Will has a mad genius cousin with the most delightful toys that might fit my checkbook just fine. And the very fact that everyone knows I've spent years of my life trying to contain my worst qualities without bothering to hide them means that absolutely no one would see it coming, or be there to help you, if you chose to humiliate any of my people again."

The orange flashes in her eyes. "Do. You. Understand?"

Okay, if he had body hair, the hairs on the back of his neck would be standing up right about now. And Joey is damn near indestructible, but he also has zero doubts right this minute that Cindy would make good on her threats.

And that orange in her eyes? Damn scary. But not nearly as scary as the utter calm and pleasantness with which these threats are delivered.

He swallowed, then nodded. "Got it," he said, then thought better, and added, "yes, ma'am."

She smiles. "Thanks, that's awesome. Hope you can make it; we're going to have some fabulous steak fajitas."

Watching Cindy smile was like watching a big jungle cat smile. Right before it ate you.

"Yeah," he said. "So.. um... maybe instead of hitting on anybody, I bring a date?"

He rubbed the back of his head. "'cause I met this chick a little while back and didn't scare her off or nothin'."

Joey relaxed enough to smile. "You might know her. She's one of the Queen kids. Kinda funny name too. Sin."

"Yeah, Barbie's big sister the ninja. That's awesome. You should definitely ask her."

"'s definitely a good idea if you agree with it," Joey said.

"Huh. Not sure I can remember the last time I actually asked a chick out like that."

"It'll be good for you. Sooner you stop overcompensating, the sooner you're better off. I gotta run. Take care of yourself, Joey."

"You too, Cindy," he said with a little wave.

When she was gone, he repeated, "'Overcompensating?'"
