Maria came to consciousness to find herself looking down at the ground. Her broken ribs screamed with pain as someone's shoulder pressed on them. Breathing was painful and difficult. She struggled to get enough air into her lungs and deep breaths caused her to cough. Blood came out with air and Maria suspected that one of her broken ribs had punctured one of her lungs.
Each step the person took was agony and Maria moved to lift herself off of his shoulder. Pain spiked and she clenched her jaw against it.
