Founders Day Parade and Celebration
The Founders Day Parade and Celebration was one of the biggest celebrations in Gotham. It was a day where the citizens of Gotham came out and showed their pride in their city. The festivities started in the morning at City Hall with a speech from the mayor and continued throughout the day. The largest parade of the year was held in the afternoon and fireworks lit up the sky in the evening. Merchants and restuarants set up kiosks on the sidewalks and the citizens shopped and ate as they watched the day's activities.

The day would also celebrate the victory of Anthony Sullivan in the mayoral race and it would be his first speech as mayor. The speech he gave was short, but had the citizens cheering by the end. The sun climbed into the sky and the parade started. Floats, marching bands and various other groups marched in the parade as it made its way through the streets of Gotham.

Nick tried to keep on a happy face while watching the festivities but he didn't like this one bit. He still didn't have any evidence solid enough to take down the new mayor. But if he had to guess Gotham was going to become a lot more like Hub if something wasn't done soon.

Maria attended the new mayor's speech and sat not far him as they watched the parade. She was still undercover, but now she worked in his office instead of being a volunteer in his campaign. They hadn't been able to find any dirt on him and connect him to any criminal activities, but she hoped they would soon. She really wasn't having more fun as a blonde.

While the festivities were nice, it also meant more work for him, added security and all was needed. So after the WE day-time duties and appearances were done, he was free to suit up and keep the peace around. With the new mayor, who so far had been quite good at keeping his hands clean of connections to the shadier lot, about to be official...there was a lot of digging to do. And fast.

The parade meandered through the streets of Gotham and large balloons were pulled through the streets by teams of people. Overhead fireworks started going off.

Mortars and live ammo started raining down on the people in the streets. The balloons were pierced and the gases, the helium being replaced with flammable gases, exploded into flames.

Fireballs filled the streets while mortars and live ammo rained down.

It only took a few seconds for Maria to realize what was going on. She ran inside City Hall to change. Huntress was needed, not Maria.

She emerged a few moments later and started going after the Jokerz that were now riding around on motorcycles adding more chaos and confusion to the situation.

Evening was starting and by his count, on a day like today, that was late enough to suit up. Which turned out to be a good thing as just as he found a vantage point for the parade, it began raining down live ammo among other things. The explosions in the air didn't help any.

First thing first, get people inside to somewhere safe. He jumped down and began directing panicked crowds of people to safer places and at least away from the center of the chaos. If any Jokerz drove by he tripped them up and took them out while giving people an opening to get away. But mostly right now he had to focus on damage control and safety of civilians immediately around him.

Once he cleared his area he'd start making his way to the control where the fireworks were, hoping to turn the bombing off.

This was definitely an interesting turn of events. Might be worth looking into if there was any underworld connection to the new mayor about this, Nick thought to himself. But he was definitely right this did feel a lot more like Hub City now.

Nick disappeared into an alleyway and activated his binary gas before jumping out into the fray as Question. He did his best to get people out of the danger of the chaos while also trying to take down any Jokerz he came across.

The Jokerz zipped around the streets on their bikes. They were throwing pies at people and things. The pies exploded into a ball of fire when the made contact with their targets.

Some way off, over one of the city's warehouses, this particular one used mostly by a chain of toy companies, a very special bat signal goes up. It illuminates the moon with the well known Bat... except there's a cut out, causing the Bat overlaid on the moon to have a giant rictus grin.

It shouldn't take the Bat too long to figure out where its come from - just as it won't take him long enough to figure out his boy is missing.

While not revealing himself, the symbol, the Joker hopes, will send a clear message to the Bat - he is wanted there. And anyone else showing up could mean disaster for the sidekick.

Maria swore when she saw the symbol. That was bad news. There was no way Bruce would be able to respond. Even if he didn't have a heart condition, Maria wouldn't let him.

There was only one thing to do. She headed back to the Batcave.

Sometime later Batman was heading into Gotham.

Thomas was slowly regaining consciousness, though he was still very groggy, the Jokerz had been smart it seemed, and had made sure there was enough to keep him down and out. He didn't open his eyes just yet, though he barely could if he wanted to, instead he listened carefully to try and get an idea of his surroundings while moving his limbs just slightly to guess at what kind of restraints they'd put him in. Normally he could get out of a hell lot of things, but drugged up and slightly battered cut that list down. So far the situation wasn't good, not the worst he'd been in, but still not good.

There's the sound of dozens of wind up toys wandering around the floor near Thomas, covering up most other sound. He seems to be bound tightly, especially at wrist and ankle - someone has gotten used to dealing with Bats, making sure there's no finger-nudging some contraption out of a belt, or shifting just enough to get a pick to a lock.

Maria struggled to breathe even as hands started to remove the batsuit. The batsuit was heavy and felt like a ton weighing down on her chest. Her own costume underneath felt extremely restrictive.

She reached up to remove the bat mask and her huntress mask and didn't care who saw. Breathing was more important than her identity at the moment.

Tomas assists with the efforts to get her out of the most restrictive elements of the suit, then removes part of his gear, giving her his rebreather and oxygen supply so she's not trying to breathe smoke. He knows who this is now - and its nowhere near his first concern.

"Robin?" she wheezed and then started coughing up more blood. She had to make sure Thomas was okay. She didn't care much about what happened to her, just that Thomas had made it out okay.

Maria blinked and for a moment she thought it was Tomas near her, but her vision cleared a bit and she saw /him/. Of all people to be rescued by it had to be him. And now he knew her identity. Shit happened and there was nothing she could do about it.

It was easier to breathe without the heavy suit and masks on. Breathing was more important.

"Thanks," she said.

"Robin will be fine. My friend has him. Right now, we need to get you some medical care. You have broken ribs, need to make sure they didn't puncture a lung or worse, but we need to do it where no one else figures out your identity. That's just asking for trouble."

Discrete doctor meant they kept the mask on unless there was a significant injury-related reason to remove it. So he was propped up in bed, mask still on, legs suspended up, and in the foulest mood possible. He'd fucked up, let the jokerz get the jump on him, let Joker catch him and use him to bait Maria, which had resulted in her getting hurt, those Shiva people to jump in, and now there was a Joker free in Gotham, both he and Maria were out of commission for it, his legs were useless, and they wouldn't let him go see Maria.

So actually, foul mood might be putting it lightly.

When Maria walked in he bolted upright, wincing immediately, and shot her a concerned look. "You okay?"

He figured if she could make it here that was a good sign. Thomas shrugged off the question of how he was, foul mood and legs like this said it well enough, and nodded to her masklessness. "Just the doctor?" Good to know who had seen, if anyone.

Well... this all could have turned out better. He supposes it could be worse... aside from the Joker. That's about as bad as it gets, and complicates everything.

And his sister is going to kill him.

Maria slowly walked over to the car. Her Huntress mask was back on. He knew her secret ID, but his friend did not. He could drop her off at her apartment in Gotham and she can call the Manor and have a car brought for her and Thomas.

"Do I need to call shotgun?" she asked.

Maria eased herself into the passenger's seat. It hurt to move, but the doc had given her some really good painkillers. She leaned back against the seat. It was a rare moment where she didn't know what to say.
