Founders Day Parade and Celebration
The Founders Day Parade and Celebration was one of the biggest celebrations in Gotham. It was a day where the citizens of Gotham came out and showed their pride in their city. The festivities started in the morning at City Hall with a speech from the mayor and continued throughout the day. The largest parade of the year was held in the afternoon and fireworks lit up the sky in the evening. Merchants and restuarants set up kiosks on the sidewalks and the citizens shopped and ate as they watched the day's activities.

The day would also celebrate the victory of Anthony Sullivan in the mayoral race and it would be his first speech as mayor. The speech he gave was short, but had the citizens cheering by the end. The sun climbed into the sky and the parade started. Floats, marching bands and various other groups marched in the parade as it made its way through the streets of Gotham.

Maria swore when she saw the symbol. That was bad news. There was no way Bruce would be able to respond. Even if he didn't have a heart condition, Maria wouldn't let him.

There was only one thing to do. She headed back to the Batcave.

Sometime later Batman was heading into Gotham.

Thomas was slowly regaining consciousness, though he was still very groggy, the Jokerz had been smart it seemed, and had made sure there was enough to keep him down and out. He didn't open his eyes just yet, though he barely could if he wanted to, instead he listened carefully to try and get an idea of his surroundings while moving his limbs just slightly to guess at what kind of restraints they'd put him in. Normally he could get out of a hell lot of things, but drugged up and slightly battered cut that list down. So far the situation wasn't good, not the worst he'd been in, but still not good.

There's the sound of dozens of wind up toys wandering around the floor near Thomas, covering up most other sound. He seems to be bound tightly, especially at wrist and ankle - someone has gotten used to dealing with Bats, making sure there's no finger-nudging some contraption out of a belt, or shifting just enough to get a pick to a lock.

Okay, someone knows what they're doing. Windup toys aren't too out there when dealing with Jokerz, though these ones must be smart to consider it. It was all a little too well done for some reason, though he couldn't exactly trust his impressions given the state he was in.

The picks in his gloves won't be of use here, because there really was no wiggle room at the wrists to use. But if they were keeping him like this then it was likely for bait. Now, to open his eyes just slightly, hopefully not enough to attract attention at all, and figure out how many Jokerz were here.

Thomas feels his stomach sink instantly.

One.

And...not a Jokerz. The Joker.

Wasn't the man supposed to be dead? Either an excellent imitation or he wasn't so dead after all. Or...perhaps it was fear gas. This did qualify for a fear scenario, and every Robin after Jason had the shadow of his death looming over them, reminding them that death was a very real possibility. Not just death, but failure. And the Joker was the face of that fear. Thomas had had this fear gas induced nightmare before...but never had it felt so real. What if it was real? But surely not if the man was dead...

No no, he couldn't trust his mind here, he had no idea what he'd been dosed with. Wait and see, stay calm, control your heart rate and wait. If this was real then Maria would come, and then he could draw attention to himself and distract the...Joker.

Let this not be real.

Batman arrived and Maria knew she would be expected. She got inside the building and as soon as she navigated to where Robin was being held, she threw a half dozen smoke grenades.

"Ahhh, there you are! I was wondering when you'd show up, Batsy." calls a voice from the smoke.

"Not nice of you to go into retirement, and let your children keep playing with all the dangerous toys unsupervised.
After all, a lot of these toys are unsuitable for children. Sharp edges, small pieces. You know."

As he speaks, either on some kind of signal, or by push of a button, perhaps, the table Thomas is strapped on starts to shift and bend. Apparently, rather than being one solid surface, its designed to break down and fold up or something of the sort - which is currently having the effect of slowly bending Thomas back, arms and legs in directions those bones weren't meant to bend, not rapidly or drastically - just applying gradually more and more pressure.

He's still testing the bonds, trying to loosen them with movement if he can, but there's little give. The moment the smoke grenades go off, filling the building, he's free to take the cover and be less subtle in his attempts to test the bonds. But again, not much use.

Which is particularly unfortunate given what happens with the table next. He doesn't cry out, but the strain has him grit his teeth and try and fight against it. He's in excellent shape, and stronger than the average person would guess, but he's not superhuman, and add in the grogginess he's still fighting off and the way the gas has weakened him well...there's no ripping free happening here.

Even as he can feel his limbs bending back he knows he has to do something here, get the Joker's attention and give whoever just dropped in (bet was on Maria) a distraction while also telling them where he was (and that at least he was well enough for now). So he finally starts talking, even though the strain can be heard behind the words.

"Little obsessed there. The same act over and over loses the funny fast. I thought you were all about entertainment." Damn he wished he had a batarang now, or something for getting out of these.

Batman pulled out two small crossbows and aimed for the closest lights. Then the remaining lights were taken out with batarangs. Batman made for the table Thomas was strapped to.

Batman pulled out a knife as he ran.

Batman always operates best from the dark. The Joker knows this. So he came prepared. As Maria runs, she'll find a section of the floor covered with something akin to flypaper, but a whole lot stronger. Apparently there's pressure sensors under it, because as soon as she steps on it, three shielded spotlights shine down on her position.

Maniacal laughter fills the place.

"Same act? Oh no. See, last time I broke a little birdie, I left Batman holding the bag. This time, we're being festive. That table is spring loaded - kind of like your ejector seats... once it finishes separating, and tearing you to pieces, its going to launch the bits like so much confetti over the Founder's Day Parade. We couldn't have this big a celebration without joining in!

Crossbows, Batsy? That's a new trick for you, isn't it?"

Batman didn't answer. The whole gig would be up as soon as she opened her mouth. For now she kept quiet and threw the knife at the table.

She was aiming for a spot near Thomas' hand so he could cut himself free. Maria pulled out a small container from the belt (okay so maybe all those pouches were handy) and sprayed it around her feet. The liquid froze the sticky adhesive and she tried to break her feet free.

Though he was half aware this was too realistic to be a fear gas hallucination, the gas was still in his system and he was still out of it and groggy. Sure he was trying to get the Joker's attention to draw it away from his rescuer, but when he sees the familiar cape swoosh by and then the lights come on...well for just a moment he thinks he's back home in his dimension and this was Dad swooping in for a last minute save. Sure he hated being saved, but it was comforting to know he'd come.

But that haze of a dream is broken the moment he sees the Batman move, even before he notices the crossbow with his shaky vision. That wasn't how Dad moved, it wasn't his style, and even groggy and out of it he recognizes it as Maria's, the glimpse of the crossbow and Joker pointing it out only confirm it. But it's a realization that has him snap out of the almost daydreaming state he'd slipped into for a moment there. Maria in the Batman uniform, that wasn't something he'd think up for a fear gassed nightmare. This must be real.

The realization sobers him up a bit, and while he's still slower than usual, it gives him focus he'd been lacking. Knife. Good. He couldn't ask for anything better, that'd cut through rope, be of use for picking locks if done right, and even be good for the metal bindings stuck to the table that he was in now.

So Thomas will get to working on just that, snagging the knife and trying hard not to think of the image of bits of him being flung out everywhere. The lighting on him wasn't the best so he had some cover while he worked away at the bonds, which...really wasn't easy with how his limbs were being bent back. "And yet you didn't wait for a holiday. Hardly really festive. Slipping in your old age? Or did you figure your return from the dead qualified enough? Self-involved aren't we?" He sounded a bit groggy still, but he had to keep talking. To stay awake, focused, but most importantly, distract the Joker while Maria worked on him. She couldn't talk while in this role, and while a silent bat wasn't odd, he didn't want the Joker dealing with too much silence and getting suspicious of things. Keep his mind occupied with fighting one opponent and talking to another. At least that was the plan on the fly.

While Maria is working on freeing herself, the Joker presses a button.

"You're good kid." he remarks back to Thomas. "But we both know you're just the sideshow. I'm the one bringing the house down!"

With the button tap, there's an explosion above, and large sections of the roof start cr8mbling down, threatening to land on Maria while she's attempting to maneuver. He has to make room to launch Robin out through the roof somehow, after all.

If Thomas gets sideswiped by some of the chunks meanwhile, its not going to hurt his feelings any.

Her feet came free of the adhesive just in time for her to look up and see the ceiling coming down. She dove to the side, but it was too late. A large chunk of roof slammed into her and sent her to the floor. Maria groaned and winced against the pain flooding her body.

Oh fuck. Some chunks do hit him, mostly in the limbs that are already being bent back. He has to stop his work on the bonds to be sure the knife doesn't get knocked from his hand. It's taking all his concentration not to black out right about now. The strain on his limbs, now also being hit with chunks of ceiling, and having to still fight off the drugged effect to stay awake and alert while getting himself out? It's a battle with the clock, and seeing Maria go down doesn't help with that.

But every Robin knows how to escape bonds, being captured is part of the cliched job description, so at least he's almost on autopilot for that bit. Not to mention he'd been rather good at it, thought this certainly wasn't going to be his best time by far. He finally gets his right hand out. But that hardly means he's free. Still another hand and both legs to go. And he's not in a condition where he should be fighting anyone to boot.

"HaaHaaaaHaaaHaaa!" The sounds echo throughout the building, even as the Joker leaps down towards the scene. As he falls, he fires his handgun, which emits a BANG! flag... which then goes launching out of the gun like a rocket, trying to spear Maria before it explodes.

His attention is on her now, little focus being paid to Thomas as he starts his slow escape, the table continuing to bend and contort in its efforts to break limbs.

Maria struggled to move with the chunk of roof on her and the pain. She managed to grab the piece of debris and turn to use it as a shield against the flag barreling toward her. The missile hit the chunk of roof and fell to the ground. Maris grabbed it a hurled it at the Joker and the shoved the debris off of her.

One limb free meant that one was free from possible breakage. But it didn't help him with the others, two limbs free and he could turn to offset the bending but not with one. Thomas gets to work on his other arm, trying to rush this along. He can't talk to distract now, because it might alert the Joker to his escape. So all he can do is rely on the fact that she can hold her own until he's free.

The Joker goes staggering back as he's struck, then dives for cover as his missile explodes near Maria, though she's partially shielded thanks to the rubble on her. But only partially.

Meanwhile, Thomas is partway free, just as the section at his feet makes a particularly sharp jolt, and the table shakes with the explosion, wrenching ankles, knees, hips and anything else still bound to the tabletop.

Tomas is a bit late to the party, but the bat signal meant trouble in times past - and the mockery of it was in issue now. He knows he should just leave this alone... but something keeps nagging at him.

As such, he's outside the factory, tearing doors off their hinges to make his way into the darkness just in time to hear a distant explosion inside.

And because it's Tomas, Iota is right behind him -- and then right in front of him, darting ahead once the doors are out of the way. She heads toward the explosion.

Thankfully the costume and cowl didn't leave a lot of exposed skin so the damage form the blast is mostly to the exposed areas. Which meant her cheeks and jaw. Maria closed her eyes and the heat of the blast was intense on those exposed areas. The concussive force of the blast knocked her back down and sent the debris she had just discarded slamming back into her. She and it went sliding across the floor and her vision blurred. Her whole body hurt and now she felt as if someone had hit her in the head with a sledgehammer.

There's a muffled groan of pain as Thomas bites into his lip to prevent it from being a full out cry out. Bad enough he'd been beaten until unconscious by Jokerz, that obviously hadn't healed, and now it felt like his joints were wrenching apart. He's too busy frantically getting his left arm out and wrenching it free as soon as he can to notice the new players on the scene. And despite the pain in his torso still from all the bending, he bolts upright, leaning over his legs and relieving some of the tension. Not in his ankles or knees much, but in his hips and abdomen at least.

He has to breath through his teeth while trying to block out the searing pain in his legs now as he stretches over to work on the bonds on his lower body.

The Joker comes out from his cover, starting towards the blurry eyed Maria, looking like three of him coming at her, spotlights still flashing around the place, further adding to the chaos.

"Down already, wait... you're not him..." he starts, as he gets a closer look. The grin grows wider. "Don't tell me, he has children running all his errands now..."

The table continues to bend and twist. Were he still fully on it, Thomas would have a few broken bones. As it is, if he doesn't end up with a broken leg or snapped ankle hobbling him for a while, it will be a miracle.

The Joker's advance is halted by a door being kicked in.

"What?! Since when does Batman call for help!" he snarls. "But then... you're not Batman... who is it?!" he snaps.

Tomas has to stop, as the darkness of the factory is replaced by a combination of smoke bombs and spotlights. He can't tell what's going on - but he can see something moving in there, and hear... machinery?

He taps Iota on the shoulder, gesturing towards the sounds of gears and movement.

Maria took the moment's distraction to scramble out from under the debris and pull herself to her feet. Her chest was agony and she figured she had a few broken ribs. Her face still burned and she hoped it wasn't more than a singe.

She pulled the crossbow attached to her thigh and fired a bolt at the Joker. She was pissed and wanted to see this bastard dead. Again.
