The next dream
The world knew about the strange dream that had over taken the world. Some people had actually woken up with white hair though their bodies had not aged like they had in the dream. They felt very tired though and had been taken with the sudden urge to create strange images that if looked upon too closely it made even the most well grounded man feel as if something was watching him.

Then things seemed safe. For a week there were no strange dreams or mass hysteria in the night. But then it happened again.

At first it seemed so innocent. The dreamers had visions of clear skies and pleasant things that made them feel better. Other dreamers who were not quite human could smell a sweet smell in their dream that caught their attention. They couldn't help but wander away until they found themselves walking and talking together happily as they walked through a strange market place.

What was strange was the people. They spoke to the dreamers in many languages and often strange beings with tentacles over their mouths and in place of their hair kept trying to offer the dreamers shining beads and crowns of gold.

Finally they make it to a far too bright shore and they see a tower that is unnaturally white. On the tower stands a figure dressed in yellow. They are suddenly aware that this figure is far too beautiful and far too horrifying to be seen. It must never be named but from the tower it watches them with it's eerie yellow body and it does the most terrible thing that it could it does not stare at them with hatred but with amused affection.

"This will be your end if you do not stop it. Awaken dreamers, for Cthulu lies dreaming in R'lyeh." Another message is spoken to a select few.

"Read the diary of Randolph Carter if you wish to save your people," a voice whispers to the few who have the journal who are among the people who were taken into this dream.

And so anyone who is not human awakens knowing something more. This time while they are left with a sense of wrongness in the world they know they have a piece of the puzzle.

For the rest they are dragged into another horrifying night. Snakes and cultists hunt them and a terrible burning eye watches them. Some are taken to the temple and fed to the terrible thing that they have burned into their memory. Others find themselves fed strange and terrible things knowing it is a twisted form of what they used to enjoy eating and upon waking will swear off their favorite foods forever. The chants are heard and a few people wake up having written the chant down. They smile knowing their god has chosen them for a great thing. The Church of Dagon has risen once more! All fear Cthulu's might!

He kisses her back, briefly losing focus on the spell. He kisses her one more time, then starts over. A few seconds later, she's sent to Atlantis and he's sent to Massachussetts, specifically about a mile above his destination.

"Good luck, Cait. We all need it." he mutters under his breath, before descending down towards town.

The city of Arkham is a rather strange town. It is a mixture of a strange New England gothic style and modern buildings that have tried to encroach upon them. The library is one of the oldest buildings in the city next to a terrifying looking Insane Asylum. Something about it said that much pain happened their.

The library just seemed subdued and very quaint.

Being that close to the Asylum, Ty shuts down his psychic senses other than his defenses. That's just asking for trouble right now - much as he'd love to scan the library ahead of time.

He checks his list again, then heads into the library and tries to find the way down to the basement.

A wise choice on his part.

Finding the way there should be easy. There is a sign pointing to the door that leads down there.

There is a funny looking man sitting at a table reading silently in the basement. He has very big glasses and seems mostly harmless behind him is a large gate that is locked with quite a few very old looking books behind the gate.

Well, this looks like the place. "Carter's diary instructed me to come here, said you could help?"

He didn't say he was a friend of Randolph Carter though. The man looks up silently and stares. His eyes from behind the big thick glasses look almost bug like and inhuman as he watches Ty.

Words are important.

Oh, right... exact wording. He blushes. "I'm a friend of Randolph Carter's."

The man nods finally. "Next time say it first boy. If you hadn't I would have sent you on a trip you would never forget."

He makes a noise then stands. "You are here for the book then? I've been waiting since that first night. Gives me chills to think about it."

"I'm sure of that. I haven't dealt with a lot of this, I'm sorry. And yes, I'm here for the book."

He nods and pulls a key ring out of his waist coat. The man is dressed in a rather old fashioned manner but that doesn't matter. He goes up to the door and unlocks it. He paces around searching silently before he pulls down a thick book that looks to be the oldest book of the bunch.

Then he comes back and puts it down on the table. "Are there any other things you are looking for? I can narrow the search down for you, lad."

"Significant other things, I'm certain. Unfortunately, I'm not well read enough yet to know everything I'm missing. I am fairly certain that I would be able to make excellent use of Ludvig Prinn's De Vermis Mysteriis and Friedrich von Junzt's Unaussprechlichen Kulten. I speak both languages, so I don't need any translation. If there's anything else you can recommend on the topic, I'd be grateful. I have a photographic memory and unlimited retention, but I'm not currently an occultist."

"Excellent my dear boy. Not enough people study the classics anymore. Of course if you are to study this kind of thing you really need to be careful about. Try this," he pulls out a think red book from one shelf. "This is a codex I was able to acquire a few years ago. It has some interesting perspectives on the Cult of Dagon and what you may expect if they appear."

If this guy is going to be their hope in the darkness, with his resources, then Ty has to trust him. He makes sure no one else is watching, then shows the man just why he was sent on this research gathering mission alone.

He reaches into Zoom's powers and bends time so that he appears to be moving with Flash-level super speed. Then he actually does use Black Adam's somewhat less impressive but still substantial super speed, hands blurring as he flips through the pages, committing every one to perfect word for word memory in instants. The entire codex takes less than a minute, he could possibly take in the whole library in a day if he had to.

"I understand the need for caution, especially as this isn't my forte. I'm primarily a rocket scientist. But the need is also... well, you know."

The old man steadies himself. That had been a pretty heavy thing for someone of his sage to see again through another's gaze.

"How much time do you have? You can read anything here. Much of it has information in English or German that will be very useful. I don't have much in Latin but... You may look at anything here."

"I read several languages, and there's books upstairs where I can learn other languages if they were needed, and probably one or two down here, looking at them, should I need to learn Chaldean or something. Speaking new languages is hard, with quirks and pronunciation, but for reading and writing, its just rote memory, which isn't a problem. For now, my time is yours. Bring me what you think I need to read and learn, and just keep bringing it if you think it will be helpful. I'll remember everything I read here. Right now, if I understand right, the fate of the world hangs in the balance, so there's nothing else more important I can be doing."

And so a pile of books gets set down. "I know. Read these."

Another stack gets put down next to that one. "Then this. They make more sense read in that order. Once you're done you'll know everything I think Carter knew in the early years. He did a great many things. The rest? Well you're not dealing with He of A Thousand Masks. I'm making this as short as I can so you can find the other books you will need once you are ready."

Using so many powers, his eyes go white, but he continues to read. Time bending, super speed, and both Deathstroke and Calculator's minds are in full effects as he absorbs the words on the page at unimaginable speeds.
"Tell me more about Randolph Carter, I can listen and learn just as well aurally as visually and follow multiple threads of information. Anything you think we might need. Any books you suggest."

He's going to have a terrible headache when this is over, but at least in the quiet of a library, under controlled circumstances, he's unlikely to manifest.

But heaven forbid anyone sets off a firecracker upstairs or something. Now would be a very bad time for him to get startled.
