Eli wants to ask 'why me', but he doesn't really want to listen to an explanation of why he'd be a good avatar for a god. It'd just depress him. He doesn't want people to depend on him. He doesn't want a god to depend on him, big or little "g".

The mania that infected him a moment before flickers away and he hunches up.
