Fallen Son (Two Days after the Battle with the League)
Garth of Atlantis woke with a start, looking about the room he shares with his wife in Atlantis.  Normally, he sleeps well and fitfully, but early this morning, the shadows have taken on a different cast. They seem deeper, darker than usual. He's not certain what is wrong today, but he doesn't wish to disturb his wife with his misgivings. He wishes Cerdian were here, to ask his opinion. The boy had come a long way from the shy, uncertain youth into a deeply thinking and feeling young man who stood by his friends and was loyal to his king and kingdom.

In short, everything a father could ask for in a son.

Sliding out of bed, Garth goes to begin his daily rituals, working a few wards that he wants to teach Cerdian the next time he's home. He needs to remind him to spend more time with his mother. She worries so much for their son at times that it takes him back to the days when he was just a baby and she refused to put him down. Their discussions over it were legendary.

"You'll unman him if you don't let him stand on his own, Dolphin."

"He's a baby, Garth. Besides, I know he's safest when he's in our arms. There will be plenty of time for him stand on his own." she told him.

A knock on the door breaks Garth's concentration. Messengers never come this early, unless King Orin needs him. Orin has called for him less since Caitria's passing, and Garth isn't sure what to do about that. He cannot say that he knows how Arthur feels, but he wishes to help his friend.

He rises and answers the door, greeting the messenger with a smile. The young man hands him a parchment and bows, leaving Garth to read the note in private.

As he reads the missive from Dick Grayson, one of his oldest friends, Garth feels his knees weaken, then give out from under him completely. He tries to speak, but the only thing that escapes him is a series of loud, wracking sobs that echoes through the house.

Ironically, he now understands /exactly/ how his king feels.

Dolphin didn't hear Garth at first. She didn't want to hear him.

Her son, the little baby she held in her arms, the boy that called himself the Outrageous Aqualad, who went around making sure that his mother was safe from "those no-good manta rays", was dead?

"No..." her voice trailed off. "There has to be some mistake. Cerdian can't be...he can't be..."

Dolphin lost all powers of speech, sobbing into her husband's shoulder.

First Mera, then Cait, and now...her son.

Garth simply wraps his arms around his wife and draws her to him, holding her close as she cries.

This can't be happening, not to them. They'd only brought him home just the other day, hadn't they? They'd named him and noticed his eyes were the same color violet as Garth's own just a moment ago, right?

The same boy who thought he'd die from cooties when Lian Harper kissed him, who was inconsolable until they explained to him that cooties weren't real...was he gone too?

"He...wasn't in any pain, Dolphin. It was quick." Garth tells her, though the words were of even less comfort now that he said them aloud.

No parent should outlive their child. How many more sons and daughters of Atlantis would they bury before the gods took mercy upon them?

One of the two people that mattered most to Dolphin in the world was gone. Just like that.

She wanted to think that it wasn't real. That at any minute, Cerdian would come in the door, tell his parents that there had been a misunderstanding, and that he wasn't leaving them anytime soon.

"Why Cerdian, Garth?" She asked in-between sobs. "Why my baby?"

"He...he died being the man we raised him to be, Dolphin. He died in defense of someone he cared for." Garth whispers.

Dolphin didn't want to ask, but she couldn't help herself.

"Who?"

This part, he especially doesn't want to go over, but Dolphin is owed the truth, no matter how she feels about the person in question.

"Lian. Lian Harper." Garth tells his wife.

Dolphin was silent. She had no feelings of animosity towards Lian, but she never did approve of how she always seemed to get her son into trouble.

And now, her son was dead.

Though Cerdian died protecting her, she suddenly wanted to hate Lian. But she couldn't.

Because, deep down, she knew that Cerdian would never forgive her if she did. And because, in a way, she always knew what her son felt for Lian Harper in his heart.

"I know one other thing, my love. The man who killed Cerdian was captured in Star City. Cerdian's remains are there as well. We...we need to go and claim him. We need to bring him home." Garth whispers.

"I'll go if it's too much for you." he offers.

"No," said Dolphin, regaining some of her voice. "I will go with you. I won't let you go get our son alone. We should do it together."

A pause.

"Does Arthur know yet?"

"No, he doesn't. I know I need to tell him, but he's still grieving Caitria and Mera. I don't want him to find a way to blame himself for this as well. He's moving away from all of us, Dolphin." Garth says.

"I'm not sure how we can help him anymore than we've already tried." Garth says.

"We can tell him together," she said. "It isn't his fault. He need not blame himself.

First Mera, then Caitria, now our son. How many more people that we love have to die, Garth?"

"We've lost so many. Koryak, too. It feels as if we're suffering for daring to stand against the Titans of Myth, but we can't be bowed. We must stand strong." he says.

"Cerdian would expect that of us." Garth tells her.

Dolphin nodded. "He would not want us to let Atlantis fall.

We must remain strong, my love. If not for Atlantis, then for Arthur."

"You're right, Dolphin. Let's go talk to Arthur. Then we need to bring our son home." Garth says.

Still, he doesn't move right away. The moment they do, it means that everything is true and Cerdian is really gone.

He's just not ready for that yet.

Dolphin locked her hand with Garth's, lacing her fingers with him. She didn't want to go talk to Arthur, to truly admit that her son was gone. She wiped the tears from her eyes with her free hand, standing up. Slowly.
