Dresden Academy

Dear Students,

As you know Parents' Weekend is almost upon us. I would like to take this time to ask you all to be on your best behavior while family and friends visit the campus.

Dining hours have been expanded to allow your visiting guests to dine with you. Tours of the grounds and facilities will be posted. Parents may interview with faculty who will be on hand to answer any questions.

Open campus is extended to all students given that you have an adult with you; you are welcome to visit St. George's Way with your family and enjoy any other local sites (such as nearby Lake George, or the Adirondack Balloon Festival taking place at the Floyd Bennet Memorial Airport). Please remember that when you leave campus and the haven of St. George's Way you are not permitted to use magic.

I expect that this will be our best Parents' Weekend yet.

Having been forced, as Ryder saw it, to enroll in art class, the Clemons was determined to enjoy it in his own way. He had hoped that making all of his projects somehow resemble a dick and balls would entertain him for at least half the year. Ryder had envisioned paintings of strategically placed fruit in a bowl, photographs of oddly shaped trees, and even a quod-and-broom quodpot sculpture. In reality, however, he'd barely lasted a few weeks before becoming bored. There hadn't been as much opportunity for such things as he'd thought and, as was often the case, these things were simply more amusing in thought than in execution.

Ryder had been considering this whilst staring out one of the windows of the art classroom. Aside from a few stray clouds, it looked quite nice out there. Then again, he thought that even if it were snowing outside he'd probably rather be out there than in here. Ryder sighed, bringing his attention back to Professor Rosenthal. He appeared to have missed the task set out for them today. Probably some free form, do what you like bullshit knowing the Professor. He couldn't make something into a dick and balls if he had a choice in the matter - that would just be gay.

He watched as the other students buzzed around the room collecting their various materials. Ryder guessed that he should do the same and reached for a nearby sketch book - not really caring if it belonged to anyone else or not. He tried to look creatively thoughtful as he thumbed through the pages, but really he was thinking about the class he should be enrolled in. He would have taken charms alongside wandless and been spared this crap. He liked spells. Spells would certainly make this class more interesting. Not surprisingly, the Clemons found himself running with that thought.

Moving to an easel, Ryder pulled out his wand - he figured it would likely pass as a paintbrush at first glance. With a flourish he hoped would be attributed to some serious art, Ryder quietly, yet clearly, attempted to cast the jelly-fingers jinx on a nearby student. He had it in mind that if he could get the whole class, he might be able to convince Rosenthal that there was some bad energy in the room that needed his attention, while they all went outside to try and get their hands working again. It was a grand scheme, and he had no real hope of pulling it of. But he'd try anyway, the trooper.

Rhys had pulled night shift for the month of September. He didn't much like it. It was, predictably, quieter than the other shifts and the hours always seemed to drag. That wasn't the worst of it though, the truly unbearable part was the fact that night time cases always fell into the same few categories - young love, underage drinking, and the antics inspired by it. Just once he would like to bust someone for trying to brew a controlled potion under the cover of darkness or uncover a gathering of students practicing the dark arts. Not that he wished for the students to be involved in such things, but he was a trained Auror after all, and shooing horny/drunk/high teenagers back to their beds had quickly lost its appeal.

Tonight had been another in a string of entirely uneventful ones, and Rhys had spent it counting down the hours until he could return to the abode he shared with his fellow guards. When this time finally came it seemed to lack the usual feeling of relief. Rhys held onto the lethargy that came from boredom and the general feeling of discontent. After informing his replacement - George - of the fuck-all that had happened over night, Rhys headed for the guards' cottage. It was a crisp morning and he tried to pay little heed to anyone else who might be outside sharing it with him as he shuffled along. He just wanted to get home, and as he crossed the threshold of the cottage door he emitted a little sigh.

He'd had it in mind that a shower might refresh him - there were some things he still wanted to do before retiring for the day, but he'd need to find the energy to do them. Rhys began the process of shedding his clothing on the way to the bathroom - he draped his jacket over the back of the couch and held onto his removed shirt. He managed to make it to the bathroom without stripping further, but now that he was there, Rhys concentrated on removing his socks. That was, until, he noticed a shape in the shower. He jumped at first, before realising it was a cauldron. Due to issues with the fireplace, it had been 'decided' that they would use the bathroom to brew potions - it was contained and the ventilation could be improved with a simple spell or two. Rhys was yet to take advantage of this marvel of a place to brew potions, and was really rather unhappy about it at present. So much so that he pulled out his wand and began to levitate the cauldron. He made sure to slam open as many doors as he could on his way out of the cottage. He moved the cauldron outside near the window of his fellow guard and housemate, and had it spew out its contents before letting it crash to the ground. How well ventilated it was out here! Right. Now it was time for that shower.

Outside of the library, a colourful box covered in glitter and stars is secured to the wall beside the return chute. A huge sign in Cinna's handwriting informs passers-by that nominations for Homecoming Court the Dresden Academy Oscars are being accepted until the end of class on Friday.

It's my pleasure to announce this years' Homecoming theme: 2011 is the year of the *Dresden Academy Oscars*! That's right, we're pulling out the stops for a Hollywood-worthy bash. Come dressed as a big star at the world premiere of their brand new blockbuster or as a character from your favorite film!

Awards for Best Actor and Best Actress and Best Supporting Actor and Actress will be replacing our usual Homecoming Court. Nominations open today so be sure to be heard!

Welcome back to Dresden Academy. I hope you all had a restful summer holiday. I have been tasked with assisting the student government for this school year. I would like to start early and I will begin accepting nominations this week.

I know it is very early in the semester, but we do like to get a jump on these matters.

What: Bernadine tweaks out about her decision to come to Dresden.

Bernadine tried on her new school uniform, bouncing around her dorm room. She'd been anxious since putting Abernathy's borrowed trunk at the foot of her bed. She waited until Monday to move in, much to the dismay of her father. Her closet was already put away.

Try as she might, Jillian Hulett couldn't convince any of her staff to retire. She also couldn't see any way to cut down on the educational programs, at least not yet. She wanted to keep everything that made Dresden unique. She could make the budget work for another year, but they'd suffer deep cuts in the following year to make up for it.

( Most of the decisions she'd made up until this point had been tiny. )

Immediately after the end of the last class on the first day back at school, Cinna headed for the library to claim an area for the Events Committee. They could probably have used an empty classroom or even sat outside in the dying sunlight, but this was a Very Important Meeting. There would probably be research and stuff.

Armed with her little pink laptop, pens and paper and a stack of magazines, she shooed unsuspecting students out of her way and hijacked the biggest table off to the back for her and her friends to spread out over while they planned the best Homecoming that Dresden Academy had ever seen.

Now all she had to do was wait for the others to show up.

Okay so after class TOMORROW we're gonna hijack the library for a SUPER EMERGENCY EVENTS COMMITTEE MEETING. We're gonna nail down a theme and get up advertising and everything!
