With Great Power Comes... Shiny Faux Gold Belts, pt. 1
The Exiles disappear from the asteroid in the midst of massed armadas after the fight with Thanos, down two of their number. After the grandeur of space and sweeping cosmic nature of their last mission, its kind of a shock to the system to end up in a dusty parking lot outside a massive arena. Currently the place is empty, though signboards flash up some of the current events planned to take place there in the near future.
Just as pressing, of course, there's a couple new faces in their midst.

"In the absence of peace, war will have to suffice." he says, steeling himself once more.

"We will succeed at the missions set before us, Sarah. We have no other choice in the matter." he says.

"So, how do you think the others are doing in their tasks? I have little knowledge of how inns work here, so I will need...guidance." Dane says.

She nods, expression tightening again. Between the sentinels and the Exiles she's been at this to go back to 'all business' quickly.

"I think we can help each other. You probably know more about fighting demons and devils than the rest of us combined - and last world, we ran into a related problem. That kind of knowledge could mean the difference between life and death in the future, so if you're up for it, when we have time to relax, I'd love some pointers and lessons. I'll go over some of the themes most common in the majority of worlds we've been through. While its important not to ever make assumptions - which is where you may occasionally be a good person to get impressions from specifically because you don't have preconceived ideas of who is a hero or villain... it might be good for you to know some of the most common names and places so you have some benchmarks. As for the others... they'll be fine. The tasks they were given are pretty routine. Newspapers are cheap, the information should be publicly accessible... just needed people who could fit in doing it. That, and last world was really rough. I'm kind of hoping that by throwing Widow, Dani and Kevin into what are basically mundane tasks, it may help get them out of crisis mode a bit. Even so, a place to sleep, a shower and hot food would probably do all of us good. Inns, though... pay a bit of money, they give you a room with running water, a bed, sometimes television. Most worlds, you're not allowed to sleep outside."

"I am more than willing to share my knowledge with you and anyone else who needs it, Sarah. We can't afford to lose people due to lack of information. We will make time to work on facing down daemons." he says.

"And I will learn as much as I can so as not to be a burden upon the team. I will falter and stumble, but if you will have patience with me, I /will/ learn." Dane vows.

"Does the...Tallus, is it called, offer you any new information about what we are doing, or does it only give you information at specific times?" he asks.

She sighs, glancing at the Tallus. "Its usually really unhelpful. It gave me the 'go for the gold', clue, starting ringing in my head when we mentioned the UCWF, which is its usual way of telling me we're getting warmer, then has been silent since. Its totally indestructible and we don't know how it works... just that it works when it wants to. As for your stumbles, we'll cover for you. I've worked with people from a wide variety of realities now, getting used to figuring out what isn't or isn't the same. I /still/ miss a lot of cultural references and things. Anyway, this is an arena, an entertainment complex. Sometime soon it will be holding a wrestling event - apparently some kind of show of super-strong wrestlers for a crowd. As soon as the others get back, we'll probably be going to a restaurant... a place they cook and serve food for people for coin, and then to hotel rooms to clean up and sleep if we have time. They'll have newspapers and things... documents which should give us the current calendar date and local and national information."

"Very well, then. I admit that I am spoiled when it comes to the sharing of information. Having a mental bond with many of my comrades made information easier to disseminate and made it easier for us to coordinate our efforts." Dane says, rolling his neck a bit to the sound of very loud pops.

"I will try to remember that I do not have that here." he says.

"Arenas are familiar to me, however. The Chosen enjoy what they would call sport, but is really more of pitting families against each other for the right to survive another day. I hope we do not find this here." Dane tells her.

"It takes a while to get used to. It took months before the original group of us was using anything like teamwork. I'm not sure how we survived some of those first fights. I don't think we'll find that here though. Context... lots of bright lights, stuff that looks like it might be kid friendly. I think this UCWF thing is supposed to be family fun here. I'm not getting a real bloodthirsty vibe off anything here. At least based on my experiences living in a war zone. Obviously something is badly wrong here, or we wouldn't be in this world... but I don't think its a bloodsport."

"Well, that's good to know. No one should be forced to fight for their life for the enjoyment of another." Dane says grimly.

"The fact that people would let their children watch such is strange, though. Would you participate in something like this, Sarah? Or let your children watch it?" he asks.

"I, uhm..." a question about children... well, that's awkward. Mentioning certain things to Bucky was hard enough. "I've been doing this for four years now, and my world doesn't exist at all currently. I find it easier not to think about things like family. As for doing this... wrestling for people's entertainment... I don't think I'd do it by preference, but as long as no one is really getting hurt, there's worse things people could be watching. And if it turns out we need to get involved with this UCWF thing for some reason in this world, I seriously doubt it would be anywhere near the worst thing I've had to do since becoming an Exile."

Dane hears the trepidation in her voice as she answers and realizes that he's spoken too boldly with her. He's never known anything but being direct, but he's starting to realize that others may not appreciate it.

"I apologize if my question offended you or made you uncomfortable. I was simply asking for your view point on this matter. I will try to be more respectful in the future, Sarah." Dane says.

"So, shall we attempt to meet with the others now?" he asks.

She shakes her head. "No, no.... no need to apologize, its a legitimate question. There's, just... complications. Starting with the fact that we never end up spending very long anywhere, and the only people consistent from world to world are the other Exiles... and even those change sometimes. It makes a lot of things different as far as interacting with people. One of the few friends I have made in all the world hopping insists I keep people at arm's length too much as it is... but sometimes that's just easier, you know?"

She sighs, realizing she's rambling. Maybe its the fact that they have some things in common, starting with an understanding of living a life of guerilla warfare, but she finds him easier to talk to than a lot of so-called 'normal' people.

"I think they were going to meet us here when they're done. With your armor and weapons, and my hammer and shield, you and I stand out... we can't go into town or anything until we have bags to stow these things in and a change of clothes. See, in a lot of worlds, people fear or hate mutants, or think everyone in an unusual costume is a villain. That's part of why I sent the others out... they pass easier than we do. As soon as we have a way to disguise ourselves to blend in, we'll all get a hotel room and plan our next move."

"I understand those complications. It is hard to trust and form bonds when those around may not be there by nightfall, yet they are the only people you can truly count on to know what you are going through. Those who have never lived through constant warfare can never understand what those who have go through daily." Dane says.

"However...there is no shame in allowing oneself to form friendships." Dane says. There is something about Sarah that seems lonely to him, though he does not say so because he doesn't know her well enough to judge her moods.

"Your hammer and shield are both of masterpieces of craftsmanship. I would like the chance to test my blade and shield against them, if you are amenable." he offers. He needs something, several somethings, to keep his mind off of Sersi's absence, which only continues to grow in the pit of his stomach.

Sarah nods, mood brightening a little. "I'd love to. I got spoiled in the world where I spent the most time... top notch workout facilities. It all been on-the-job since we left. I could use some practice. The shield was my father's... Captain America... Steve Rogers. Not sure if you had an equivalent in your world. The hammer was Thor's... the Norse god. If I remember my world's Avengers' history right, and your items are the same, those are the ebony blade and the shield of night, right?"

"The Captain of the Guard. I remember him well. I called him a friend, though I did not get to see him as often as I would have liked." Dane says, remembering the fearlessness with which Steven Rogers fought. There were few men like him, and Sersi might have married him rather than Dane if the other man had not died in an untimely fashion.

He does not know of Thor, but he nods as she explains who he is. He nods when she names his weapons.

"You are correct. I am honored to wield both the blade and shield. They are nearly a part of me, I have held them so long. I enjoy sparring when I can. My wife provided a great challenge, as she is both stronger and faster than me. It aided me against the Daemons when they came for us. If I can help you in any way, I will do so." he says.

"Now, I have a question about food. What, exactly, is a pizza, and how does one capture it?" he asks.

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

"It will be an honor to practice against you then. You've got a lot of years on me, but I was trained by my dad... and the hammer and shield have been pretty much my only constants the last four years... even if I've only figured out a small fraction of what this hammer can do. I've heard of the abilities of your weapons, though always from secondary sources."

The question gets a small grin. "In most worlds I've encountered, there's more opportunity for a world to build up and civilization to advance than was probably the case amidst a daemon war. In most places where you see cities like this, the residents don't need to grow or hunt their own food. They work for money, then exchange it for food grown or raised by people specializing in the tasks, farmers and ranchers. Some people buy ingredients and do their own cooking... but since we don't have a more permanent residence, we're going to hit restaurants, places where we can exchange money for any food on their menu. Pizza isn't a thing you capture... its a flat bread which is then covered with tomato sauce and cheese - then other ingredients are added. Hawaiian pizza, which is pizza with Canadian bacon and pineapple, is one of the greatest foods in history."

Dane nodded. "This pizza sounds promising. I'm looking forward to trying it."

"This entire city is like...a forest or a jungle made of stone. The metal horses are loud and spew smoke, but everyone still uses and rides inside of them. The haze in the sky must come from these, right?" he says.

"Why are they using these devices if it fouls up the air they breathe?" Dane queries.

"Those are cars. In most worlds, they came about around a century before the current time period. They're potentially much faster than a horse, and magic is not commonly available to the masses in most worlds. A car also doesn't take up the space needed to raise horses. The haze in the sky is from them... from factories that mass produce goods... lots of sources. For the most part, though, I think there's a lot of technology we'll have to get you used to. In any case, most of these people never lived in a time without the haze in the sky and pollution. There's efforts being made on a lot of worlds to cut back on it, but it will never be like before the industrial revolution again."

Dane listens intently as Sarah explains these "cars" to him. He finds it both strange yet hopeful that people have come to depend on these technologies to aid them. How much different would his own world be if they had cars to ferry them against The Chosen?

"Hm. I see that I'll need to spend some time studying the technology of the worlds we travel to. There may be things in our travels that can aid my world when I return to it." he surmises.

"Probably so. If you don't have cars, I'm also guessing your weapons are at the crossbows and melee weapons stage? Maybe muskets? If so, I can teach you about rifling, rocketry, ballistic arcs... somewhere between two hundred and a thousand years of warfare and tactics beyond what I'm guessing your technology base is."

Normally she wouldn't dare do such a thing to a less advanced world, but for the overthrow of demons? That would be worth it, right?

"As for the cars... there's also heavily armed and armored versions, as well as flying vehicles that travel at hundreds of miles an hour."
