These Things Happen To Other People.
It was a very small room, with a very small bed, and nothing on the walls but a couple of hooks on which he had hung a 12th-Century arming-sword.

Exodus was deep in thought, his hands folded on his chest as if in prayer... or death.

This was not exactly on Hank's list of things he'd like to be doing, but it was ultimately necessary and he was the best person for the job, all things considered.

He took a breath and then knocked on Exodus's door.

As soon as Exodus could rise, the door opened.

"...Dr. McCoy," he said blankly.

"Forgive my intrusion, Monsieur Bennett," Hank said, politely, "but it is standard operating doctrine for Utopia that all residents have an updated medical file on hand, in the event of emergencies and the like."

He went on. "I was hoping to schedule one for you in the near future."

He shuts his eyes.

What is it? His helmet was off so it had been easy to reach him. He was used to this so whoever was near wasn't ignored despite his having a second conversation.

Dr. McCoy, and through him, Summers, are insisting I schedule a medical examination.

The fact that Paris is fundamentally uncomfortable with this is implicit in the mental tone, but there's more to it than that. If he gives in, it will be because Magneto thought it best to. Not for any other reason.

There was a line to tread with keeping Exodus happy despite the fact he would do anything he was asked as long as it was Erik asking. He considered the request that was being made for several minutes.

It is a ritual to him as a scientist and will ease his mind. Schedule the examination and ask him if I will need to come see him as well.

Because he's curious what Hank McCoy would make of being in a room alone with him.

[info]preyforheaven
2011-04-15 10:38 pm UTC (link)
As you wish.

Finally, Exodus opens his eyes. "Apparently, it would be best to schedule an examination. This afternoon, perhaps? I hope it can be kept simple. It has been 800 years since I have allowed another man to hook me up to a machine, and I would prefer to leave it that way." A breath. "Magneto also asks if he will need to come and see you as well."

A telepathic conversation then. Hank has assumed as much from the closed eyes posture Exodus had adopted.

"That would be fine," he told him. "And I assure you, it will not be overly complicated."

The other question was a rather daunting one. But... spirit of cooperation and such. He rather doubted that Nemesis or Doctor Rao would be up to the task (or in Nemesis's case, survive it).

"You may inform Magneto that he will likewise need to be examined."

"I would also like to draw some blood."

Paris forces himself to breathe evenly, steadily, trying not to associate the diagnostic equipment with... other things. He manages.

Then he offers an arm appropriately, with a paradoxic "Of course you realize, I trust you no further than you trust me."

"Of course," Hank said, making certain to make the process both as quick and as painless as possible. "But our respective leaders have seen fit to offer each other their trust, leaving we their loyal followers to follow in their wake."

He knew, of course, of Exodus's general background, from the Avengers files. Fascinating truthfully, especially Apocalypse's involvement in the man's life.

In some terrible, secret keeping way, he was desirous of the secrets possibly locked in his DNA. An early mutant, touched by Apocalypse's Celestial-borne technology? He might well hold the secrets toward reversing the Decimation.

He wondered if keeping this to himself put him on the same slippery mortal ground as Scott.

[info]preyforheaven

Another breath, trying to make it look like this isn't difficult and failing. "If it should ever prove needed for any of the mutants here, and if the taint of the False God does not render mine completely inappropriate, then I wish to inform you in advance that I volunteer if necessary."

It's the first time since arriving that he's done something he didn't want to do without Magneto's prompting, but they have to look after their own.

He clears his throat. "If there is nothing further?"

He'd given sufficient time for Exodus to be finished with his 'checkup' before presenting himself for the same treatment. Hank McCoy was a brilliant man but he had his own issues with doctors and geneticists after Moira McTaggart tried to change his behavior while he was helpless in her care.

But one did what one must to show trust to earn it in return.

[info]starsandgarters

"A few simple medical scans, some blood-work, and, perhaps, the answers to a few questions," Hank explained.

"Interesting," Hank mused. "The Evolutionary assured me the situation was beyond his capacity to correct."

Had he been lied to, or had the situation simply changed? But if so, in what way? What purpose would the Evolutionary have had for lying? Puzzles within puzzles...

He indicated the medical scanner. "If you would sit, I can begin the scans."

Quite interesting indeed. A pity there were no cellular samples of Magneto during his period of powerlessness. If Hank were a gambling man (and, in fact, he was. Ben was throwing a poker game in the near future), he would bet that if such had ever existed, Exodus would have made certain they were destroyed and all records of them stricken.

Hank keyed up the scanner. "You'll probably be able to detect the energy fields of the scanner, but they are quite harmless."

"It will take a few moments, and then I will need to draw some blood."

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

[info]magnetic_master

He could do more than detect the energy fields if he wished but he closed his eyes and sat passively waiting for the examination to be over.

"I would be interested to know if there is a difference from before I lost my powers and now. The High Evolutionary did not give me any raw data on what state I was in after the procedure." Honestly knowing his powers were returned and at full or better than full capacity from before he hadn't questioned much.

"I assume you still have your data from my various encounters with you and Moira?"

[info]starsandgarters

"Of course," Hank said. He punched a few keys on his portable control pad. "If you will direct your attention to the monitors above... The one on the left contains the last scan taken of you prior to today; the right contains the current scan."

He adjusted his glasses so he could have a better look himself.

He had seen similar scans before so he read some of the relevant data to compare it. Basic health and such things seemed very similar as before.

"I am never quite sure what to expect after so many enormous changes to my cells." The initial damage he did to himself with his powers, being turned into an infant and then back to an adult in the prime of life and losing and regaining his powers. It could have set up some disastrous chain of events but never had seemed to yet.

Hank's own mutatation has been rather on-going. Which reminded him... his own research, at one time, was a hormonal extract which allowed anyone to become a mutant. Its use led to his own furry state, progressed further by a "secondary mutation." Perhaps it was time to revist that research...

"Cells were not, in general, meant to undergo such rapid metamorphosis. Those few who have survived such processes are hearty individuals indeed. As you appear to be. Your powers and health seem quite comparable to previous scans."

"It is not the first time I have survived something that would have killed others after all." He didn't clarify just exactly which time that was since there were many to choose from.

"I would not imagine many would survive the High Evolutionary's treatment. It was not...pleasant."

Magneto certainly has a habit of returning from circumstances that would have been certain death for others. Though Hank supposed many of the so-called "super-villains" had performed similar resurrections. Steve certainly spoke of the Red Skull in such a manner often enough.

"I imagine not," he said, as he readied the needle for the blood draw. "If you would permit me..."

Since the scan was over he held out his arm and the small pieces of metal that made up his costume crawled back up his arm to leave the crook of his arm bare.

"Of course."

Hank went out his job carefully and cautiously, but with the precision and expediency that comes with long practice.

"I must admit," Hank said, "your choice of compatriots surprises me."

[info]magnetic_master

And here is the less casual of a question of course. There was no movement from his arm while the blood was drawn since he was trying to be helpful.

"Why? I would think that almost nothing about me surprised you anymore to be honest."

[info]starsandgarters

Hank finished with drawing the blood.

"Then you do not understand him very well." He held the little bit of cotton to the needle hole to put pressure on it for a moment to make sure it wouldn't bleed.

"The enemy stronghold is what I say it is. And I have declared you and the others to be our allies."

How strange indeed. Hank can't help but think back to the time Professor Xaiver had placed Magneto in charge of the school and the New Mutants. Scott had walked away, and the rest of them, including the newly resurrected Jean, had formed X-Factor largely out of their distrust of the man, in spite of their one-time mentor's faith.

Exodus, clearly, was more loyal than they. But was such loyalty truly earned, or the mere product of fanaticism? And how long would that truly last, if Magneto made choices Exodus did not approve of?

It felt, to Hank, very much like a pressure cooker.

"As you said," Hank said, neutrally. He checked over his results. "I believe I have everything I need, thank-you."

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

[info]magnetic_master
2011-04-19 10:40 pm UTC (link)
And he had to explain to a young man's parents why their child was dead when he was in charge of the school. Charles had too much trust in him at the time perhaps.

He understood Exodus' loyalty and need for someone to help guide him. He would watch over him and make sure nothing put the pressure on that high.

With a sketchy smile he stood and his sleeve crawled back down his arm to cover it. "You are welcome. Please let me know if you need anything else."

Amazing. A conversation with Magneto that was both civil and not followed by fighting. Would wonders never cease?
