A hint of a problem.
The headache she'd had for the past two days had finally abated and Jean decided that since it was gone, it was a fine day to do some practice.  She felt weak since she'd return and she accounted for it in her sad amount of training.  Abilities were one thing, but you had to use them to be good with them.  She knew that and she knew that she'd simply gotten lazy, her mind turning flabby like an ab or an arm might.  She left Scott a note to let him know where she was--he'd been sleeping and while she could crawl into his head anytime she wanted, notes were still a sweet way to communicate--and then took off for the Danger Room.

A full-service workout was what she wanted so she started with low level drills.  Kid stuff, really, the kind of things they started students on.  Of course they were easily beaten and she steadily worked on more and more complicated scenarios, but instead of defeating them soundly, Jean had...trouble.  For the fourth simulation in a row, her telekineses failed, leaving her for dead in the simulation.  Suddenly, the room shut down.  It was the failsafe they had installed, but now an alert would be sent out that someone was practicing and in over their head.

And Jean should not have been in over her head.

Scott was one of the first to arrive when the alert had gone out, making his way down to the Danger Room as quickly as possible.

The door to the Room opened with a hiss of hydraulics.

"...Jean?" he asked, surprised.

Jean lay flat on the floor when the door opened, having been knocked there during the last failed sim.

"...yeah." She looked away for a second. This was humiliating.

He bent down next to her. "You okay?" he asked, his voice free from judgment and only containing concern.

"Now that things are stopped and things have stopped flying at my head, yes. That was just...weird. The Room malfunctioning?"

"Possible," Scott agreed. "I thought Hank had just re-serviced everything, but I didn't double check like I usually do."

The pressures of ever increasing demands on his time and pushing his personal life back to the forefront had taken him away from some of his more regular duties, not that he regretted it.

"We can run a diagnostic from the control room, though," he added. "Unless you'd like to go down to medical?"

"I'm fine, Scott. Honest." Jean pulled herself up and smoothed herself off. Despite her protestation that she was fine Jean seemed a little unsteady. "I think we should just run the diagnostic. Something wasn't right here and I'm admittedly a bit freaked out. It isn't every day the Room puts me on the floor in fear."

Truth was it had never happened before. Jean was an omega level mutant. There was nothing that had ever stopped her for very long before. Not even death.

"If you say so," Scott replied. Jean understood her limits better than almost anyone. If she believed she was fine, Scott was inclined to give her the benefit of the doubt. This was, after all, a woman who had not even let death deny her.

"Let's go get that diagnostic."

"It was weird Scott. It was just weird."

Jean went along to the control room and sat down. She let Scott run the show and as he ran the diagnostic she became increasingly uneasy. The controls were showing no malfunction. At all.

Scott frowned. "Okay, nothing to worry about necessarily," he said, uncertain who he was trying to convince their. "That means we go up a step on the diagnostics and make sure we're reading that right in the first place."

"Scott, I think the diagnostic is right. I don't really think it malfunctioned. I think...I did."

She frowned.

"Yeah. I was dropping things during the first sim few sims. I didn't think it would get out of hand, though. And then it was as though nothing worked."

Another frown. Scott was good at those too.

"Did this just start happening?" he asked.

"It started about a week ago, Scott. I thought it was nothing, like maybe I just wasn't feeling well. It went away. I thought it was just a fluke."

Even through his glasses, concern was evident in Scott's eyes and on his face. He took Jean's hand.

"We'll get to the bottom of this, I promise you."

Remy comes running at the sound of the alarm from Danger Room. He knows it doesn't go off unless someone's in big trouble, or practicing outside of their weight class.

So he finds it strange that Scott and Jean, two of the toughest people he's ever met, seem to be the cause.

"Wha's goin' on in here? I come expectin' a fire and we got a make-out session goin'?" the Cajun chuckles.

"When everyone say, 'get a room', dey don't mean the Danger Room, my friends." Remy chides.

"Hey. Don't knock it..." Jean smiled a little then sighed.

"My TK wasn't working, Remy. It started out okay and then completely stopped working. I was about to be mincemeat until the room shut down and alerted."

She let that sink in.

Scott kept his expression under control and did not give rise to the retorts he could have unleashed upon Gambit.

"We'll get Hank to have a look at you," Scott said.

"Probably a good idea. I think in the meantime, maybe we should try to run some more drills in here to see if it continues. Remy, what do you think?"

"I t'ink maybe you need to relax a little before jumpin' back in. Maybe you should take Scott's advice and get Hank t'look at you now." Remy says.

"We don't want dis happenin' again with any side effects, no?" Remy asks.

"We just got y'back, Jeannie. We don' want y'gettin' hurt or anythin'."

"Much as I hate to say it," Scott said, "Gambit's probably right."

His thoughts were more tender. I'm not losing you again.

Logan didn't get the alarm until he returned from his run. Sweaty, cranky and looking for something to rumble with, he appeared in the control room doorway. "What's goin' on?"

Jean laced her fingers with Scott's and squeezed his hand. I can't die again, I can't...

When Logan entered she nodded in greeting.

"My TK failed."
