Michael Sapt could not believe he had let the girls from the office conspire with their friend Bryn into getting him into this situation. But so it went. Sydney didn't sound bad at all, of course, but after all this time, he still wasn't sure how to go about having another relationship, so it was hard to say how well this could possibly go even if it did go well.

So he was sitting here in the Literati Cafe waiting to meet Bryn's sister. He'd arrived early -- as usual.

"Hope springs eternal," Syd said with a smile. "I have no idea what goes through her head."

"My sister Flavia and I don't always understand each other, either."

"I have a hard time remembering how American schools work; is Zoey in school?"

"Bryn and I understand each other, we're just complete opposites. In almost everything."

Syd nodded. "She is. First grade." And it had been an interesting year so far to say the least.

"Show business never really fascinated you, I take it?"

"If you don't mind my asking, is there generally less to worry about when she's in school, or not? One always hears so, but it seems like there would be so much ...Requirements, as it were, to fret about."

"No. Books and languages fascinate me more. Bryn calls me Bookworm, I call her Clotheshorse. Polar opposites."

Syd had to think about that one. "I know where she is, but Zoey has picked up some habits from the Defenders and they're not acceptable in a school environment. I worry about her doing things. She beat another kid up the first day of school."

"Oh my." Michael blinks. "I can see how that could be a problem at an impressionable age."

Syd nodded. "She's very impressionable and tries to be like the others around the house. I got called in one day because she was calling the other kids 'Foolish mortals'."

Michael can't help but chuckle just slightly. "On the bright side, she could have probably picked up much worse language from the wrong sort of television." A pause as he drank his coffee more. "When I was younger -- much older than Zoey, of course, in my teens -- I developed the affectation of swearing in English because my mother did not know it."

Syd chuckled. "That I can understand. I used to swear in every language but English because my parents, and now Zoey, don't understand it."

Another very small smile, and, watching her face to make sure that German is one of the languages in question and he's not just confusing her, he explains, in that language, "It was too bad for me, though, as German can be very expression when one is angry. English was good, though. Better than Latin, anyway; I can't pull off being angry in Latin."

German is good for swearing, but I find that the best language for swearing is Farsi or Russian. Both have some pretty creative swear words and insults," she answered in German. "Latin is probably the hardest to swear in."

"It's interesting to say the least," she said with a smile. "What other languages do you know?"

Yup, probably the best blind date so far. This was a guy she could carry on a conversation with. He had been the only blind date she could carry on a conversation with.

"Only Spanish. It was rather easy after Latin, and I thought it might be useful in America. It generally is."

Syd nodded. "Once you know Latin the Romance languages are very easy to learn. You'd have an easy time learning Italian and French as well. And yes, Spanish is very helpful in the US. I'm teaching it to Zoey along with French. Once she get those down, we'll move on to something else."

"Sounds like she's getting quite an education." A pause. There's something he wants to ask, but he's reticent, so he just drinks more coffee.

"She is," Syd said and looked at him carefully. He wasn't saying something he wanted to say. She knew that look well. Simon had it almost all of the time.

After a few moments' consideration, Michael decided to wade in and hope he could do it tactfully. "Please excuse the personal question, but if you don't mind my asking, is her father involved?"

Syd shook her head. "No. He's never been involved in her life. I've been raising her with the help of my sister." Syd smiled. "And lately the Defenders. They've all been great with her, especially Simon."

"Good to have around, then, I'm sure. It's interesting. The pictures one sees of him lately... a ...friend's mother back home had some old pictures of him from films in the early 1980s, and if not for the clothes, he'd look the same."

"Yes, especially when things start to get out of hand, which they usually do pretty quickly." Syd smiled a little. Why were they talking about the one subject she had been trying to avoid talking about with anyone? "It's that whole being immortal thing."

Time for a subject change.

"How much of America have you been able to see so far? Have you had the chance to travel, or has work kept you here in LA?"

"I've seen some. When I first moved, I flew into the east coast and took trains across the continent, so I got to see a few things along the way. But I haven't really had the time to get away since except to go straight home."

"At least you got to see some of it," she said. "It sounds like work takes a great deal of your time. Zoey and I haven't done much traveling up until now, but next summer I'm planning on taking her to Disney world in Florida."
