The Raging Battle
An eerie calm fell over Asgard for a few brief moments. The forces of dark were outside of the shield over the city and were still. Inside the Asgardian warriors waited for the moment when the shield would come down and the battle would start. They were warriors, men and women, caught in an endless struggle against the dark forces that were camped outside the walls.

This would be another battle in an almost endless series of battles. Two forces locked in a constant struggle until the day the last battle came and all would be decided. Today was not the day of that last battle, but it was a day of battle.

The warriors inside the shield had taken up their proper places and waited for the shield to come down. The warriors armed with swords, shields, axes and other weapons were on foot and horseback. Beserkers waited to unleash uncontrolled fury upon their enemies. Magic users stood perched upon high battlements waiting to unleash their spells upon the enemy. Archers also lined the battlements, waiting to rain a storm of arrows upon their foes. Valkyries waited to take to the air to strike at their enemies from above. The battle commanders paced the upper battlements looking out at the forces, dark and light, below them.

Everything was still. Man, woman, horse and enemy. Not even a breeze blew.

The shield came down and chaos erupted.

"I respect thine station, princess. And for this, I wilt ask thy permission... mayst I speak freely?"

"Aye," she answered immediately.

Never the calmest of people, when given permission, Brunhilde moves right up face to face with Svalin, rage smoldering in her bright blue eyes.
"Not only wert thou not defending the throne and our liege... but neither wert his shield maidens. For the choosers of the slain hadst many souls to take this day - our first duty. Many of which shouldst not hath died... wert thou leading them as thou wert instructed. Thy brother lives yet... and there ist no death sight about him. I hope it pleases thee well that thou mayst hath traded dozens of lives for his... and I hear twas e'en thy doing that he wast sent back into the horde exhausted and without the madness."

She takes a moment to collect herself, her pitch getting higher and higher as she speaks.
"A valkyrie's /first/ loyalty ist to duty. To the slain, to our lord. Thou didst cause many of the former, and abandoned both duty and lord. I do not think the way of the Valkyrie ist for thee, if both duty and the throne wert so quickly set aside. Thou canst turn in thy shield when thou'rt recovered. Mayhap in time, thou wilt hold chance to earn mine trust... but I tell you this, Sifdottir... I wilt not fly with thee until that day. And I wilt train thee no further."

A physical blow would have been less painful. Svalin bowed her head in shame and then dropped to her knees. Her chest was tight and it was difficult to breathe. She blinked back the tears forming in her eyes.

"It wilt be as thou wishes, Brunhilde," she said submissively. "The words thy speakest art true. This maiden didst abandon her duty and station for her blood. I do not deserve to carry the shield of a shield maiden and I do not deserve to fight alongside or train with the Valkyries."

She forced the words out through the turbulent emotions inside of her.

"I swear I wilt work e'en harder to restore thy trust in Svalin Sifsdottir and to earn back the shield of a shield maiden. This I swear I wilt do or die in the process."

Brunnhilde nods firmly.
"Thy passion ist admirable... for a warrior. But more ist expected of thee, and thou shouldst know it well. Prove to me thou hast the strength of thy convictions, and thou shalt receive a second chance... but t'will be the only one. I wilt not take thy mount from thee... he ist bonded to thee and wouldst be useless to any other. Be glad of that, at least... I considered it."
That said, she turns and stalks away if not prevented.

"Thank thee, Brunhilde," she said as Valkyrie walked away.
