The Raging Battle
An eerie calm fell over Asgard for a few brief moments. The forces of dark were outside of the shield over the city and were still. Inside the Asgardian warriors waited for the moment when the shield would come down and the battle would start. They were warriors, men and women, caught in an endless struggle against the dark forces that were camped outside the walls.

This would be another battle in an almost endless series of battles. Two forces locked in a constant struggle until the day the last battle came and all would be decided. Today was not the day of that last battle, but it was a day of battle.

The warriors inside the shield had taken up their proper places and waited for the shield to come down. The warriors armed with swords, shields, axes and other weapons were on foot and horseback. Beserkers waited to unleash uncontrolled fury upon their enemies. Magic users stood perched upon high battlements waiting to unleash their spells upon the enemy. Archers also lined the battlements, waiting to rain a storm of arrows upon their foes. Valkyries waited to take to the air to strike at their enemies from above. The battle commanders paced the upper battlements looking out at the forces, dark and light, below them.

Everything was still. Man, woman, horse and enemy. Not even a breeze blew.

The shield came down and chaos erupted.

In the final moments of the shield, as it flickers and fades under the assault of the gathered foes, a horrible transformation takes place. Halbjorn, and the others who have succumbed either to the madness, or to the grim reality of always facing down their own death, living, literally, to die, chew at their shields, howl and roar like beasts, clutch their weapons so tight that their hands bleed.

As the shield comes down, this is the first tide that strikes the enemy, even as they begin their rush. They are the bear-sark, few in number, but their fury leads them to fight, heedless of their injuries, until they fall. And strongest and swiftest of this bloody tide is the son of Thor.

By the time he wades into the demons, axe swinging in a wide arc, he's not a humanlike thing anymore. He's a howling beast, uncaring of life and death. There is only slaughter.

Within seconds, he disappears from all sight into the demonic masses.

Vincent stood at Asleif's side on one of the towers. "At your command, Lady Asleif." They were friends, but this was a particular setting, and there were others around as well.

Vincent had a spell ready in each hand, and was only waiting for her direction. Despite his experience, he'd never had to employ combat magics on such a wide scale before, and was uncertain of how best to employ them without throwing the troops on the ground into disarray.

Even while waiting on her command, once the shield comes down, there's another new sensation for Vincent. He's a potent spellcaster, one of Earth's better, due to his practice and blood.

Here, he's a novice. Literally hundreds on the other side have enough inborn magical might to challenge the full blooded gods themselves, casters on par with Vincent's mother, and some even on par with Loki. Spells that he'll probably grasp fully in two hundred more years of intense study and analysis fly about the battlefield. Here, he's not the master - but one of the thin line of defense that the Asgardians depend upon to work together and protect the troops when they're opposed by Dark Elf shadow magic, Frost Giant shamans as old as the mountains, and hordes and hordes of demons whose very blood boils with sorcerous power. There can be no grandstanding here - in many cases, entire cadres of wizards are needed in concert to shield units of troops from massive fireballs, or to unweave dark elven underworld illusions.

His own bent for such trickery gives him some small edge, as well as the capacity for understand what he's seeing to grasp just how much he has yet to learn.

On the battlements
[info]shield_maiden

Svalin paced back and forth on the battlements. Her warrior's heart and blood roared in her veins and demanded she be on the field of battle and fighting the enemy, but duty kept her out of the action. She had been in a foul mood since talking to her grandfather and not being on the battlefield was making it worse. Duty was a heavy burden to bear.

She wanted cold Asgardian steel in her hands and the warm blood of the enemy running into the ground. Even the sting of enemy weapons biting into her flesh was missed.

"Keep firing! Distract the trolls and giants!" she yelled to the archers. "Cover the left flank!" she yelled to her sister Valkyries. She watched them swoop down to support the left flank of warriors.

Tactics were not usually something Asgardians employed in battle, but Svalin was a rare Asgardian who thought through a battle. Her time on Migard had been spent reading and studying battle tactics. Asgardians were great fighters, but most of the time they weren't smart fighters. It could mean the difference between victory and annihilation.

At least one person sees her displeasure. Still marshalling the storms and battling the Frost Giants for command of the skies, Thor still spares a moment for his daughter.

"Odin ist in meditation to prepare for a great feat of magical power. He mayst be sequestered for hours... we must needs hold. Soon, I must move to take on Surtur, lest he enter the fray whilst Odin ist busy. Balder hast taken command of the Hawks and first legion on the ground. The Vizier ist coordinating the mages. The throne room falls to thee - thou must guard thy grandfather's preparations and command the Valkyries, the archers, the support, and marshall the troops shouldst any fall back. For now, daughter, the throne of Asgard falls to thee... I am proud of thee."

The majority of the frost giants are brutes, wading into combat with flung rocks or bows like siege engines before closing and drawing massive waraxes, or medium sized trees they refer to as clubs. They are protected from much of the enemy's sorcery by their own shamans, who also summon terrible whirling storms behind them, blinding foes with the force of shards of ice borne on powerful winds, or freezing sme foes where they stand.

The trolls are not entirely unlike the frost giants, brutes, though occasionally powerful ones. But even they are shrouded and hidden by their magics until they emerge from the rocky surroundings. They rush at ranks of troops, some felled by arrows and spells, but most rushing heedlessly on. Their troops have always savored toe to toe combat over any other tactic.

As individual trolls come out of the rocks, they are swarmed by Wolves in groups as best as the Prince can organize, a normal enough fight for them, merely placed within a much wider scale.

Twilight is not forged, but Surtur is here even so, and stands untouched by the best efforts of Asgardian sorcery and power, commanding the swarms of fire demons that stream onto the field around him, seemingly endless in number.
The more sorcerous of them weave complex fire spells, some simply as offensive weapons to batter the gates, while others are hypnotic patterns, intended to freeze warriors where they stand until overrun. Others are flames which sweep in sheets over the field, harming foes, but healing fire demons.

With so many deaths certain on all sides, how could Hela not attend? She stands calmly behind her hordes, only deigning to even enter combat when some fool fights through the undead hordes. Then those unfortunates get the death touch.
For most, the massed armies of the dead, including loved ones for many, is more than enough to have to deal with.

The fact that she just killed a giant by herself barely registered in her mind.

The undead swarm around her, climbing over the giant to get to her and try and bear her under with their weight and numbers, if not their skill, more than willing to die on her sword to slow her down.

Vincent is out for longer than most of those who were similarly wounded, but eventually regains consciousness. He is heavily salved and bandaged still, fresh wrappings across his face especially. No treatments seemed able to abate that wound in particular.

He tries to sit up, and his body screams it's protestations. "Water... someone please?" He coughs after getting the words out, finding his throat dry.

There's a strange light-headedness about him, amidst the physical pain, as if something in his mind was absent.

Svalin did return home under order of her mothers. She was still injured, nothing she couldn't handle, but her mothers, both of them, insisted on her finishing the healing process at home. Not that she was going to complain much. She wouldn't admit it, but she could use a little mothering.

Her stomach sank a little when she saw Brunhilde. "Hail, Brunhilde, and well met."

Douglas has been busy running messages between various factions, and conferring with his family about the Wolves' own losses, all of which are taken hard and will be grieved further soon, but none, fortunately, in the immediate family.
But now, there are other matters to which to attend.

"HJORDIS!" He calls as he spots her. "How fares the great heroine?"

"Douglas!" she said with a big smile, very glad to see him. She had heard of casualties among the wolves and had feared that he was one of them. "'Tis good to see thee. I art not a heroine. I wast only doing my duty to the realm. How fares thee?"

Thor is waiting for his daughter, once she enters their home. He's resting from his own injuries, but able to get around well enough to be allowed to recuperate there under Einmyria's care.

"Daughter..."

By Hela's cold touch, it went from bad to worse. Despite the fact they were in their own home, Svalin went down to one knee in front of her father. He was the ruler Asgard and proper respect would be shown.

"Father," she said quietly.

It dawned upon Asleif that she was actually feeling regret that she had not been able to come check on the status of Vincent's recovery sooner. She supposed that was simply the way it was, with friends.

"Vincent?" she asked as she approached. "Art thou well?"

Vincent was well enough to sit up by the time Asleif arrived, although a matronly healer, seemingly incredulous of his lesser constitution, had forbade him from trying to stand unaided just yet.

"Well enough to feel unwell." He laughs dryly. "I will live, it seems."

She went looking for her brother.

He's very still at rest. Even by his standards, the wounds are pretty horrific, and this is after the healers have gotten to him. Still, she's allowed to proceed, and his arm is gently prodded, a healer whispering in his ear once his right eye opens, the left still too covered in scar tissue to do likewise. Still, a smile crosses his features.
"Svalin!"
