The Raging Battle
An eerie calm fell over Asgard for a few brief moments. The forces of dark were outside of the shield over the city and were still. Inside the Asgardian warriors waited for the moment when the shield would come down and the battle would start. They were warriors, men and women, caught in an endless struggle against the dark forces that were camped outside the walls.

This would be another battle in an almost endless series of battles. Two forces locked in a constant struggle until the day the last battle came and all would be decided. Today was not the day of that last battle, but it was a day of battle.

The warriors inside the shield had taken up their proper places and waited for the shield to come down. The warriors armed with swords, shields, axes and other weapons were on foot and horseback. Beserkers waited to unleash uncontrolled fury upon their enemies. Magic users stood perched upon high battlements waiting to unleash their spells upon the enemy. Archers also lined the battlements, waiting to rain a storm of arrows upon their foes. Valkyries waited to take to the air to strike at their enemies from above. The battle commanders paced the upper battlements looking out at the forces, dark and light, below them.

Everything was still. Man, woman, horse and enemy. Not even a breeze blew.

The shield came down and chaos erupted.

"Thou shouldst not be here." he responds, cutting in a wide arc. "We hath need to get thee back to the walls." Reason and words are returning, and with it, a sense of his injuries. "And I canst not long stand these odds now. Canst thou walk?"

He cuts down others from his way, talking over his shoulder. "We wilt not, lest we both shalt die. The spirit hast fled, and the madness no longer lends me its strength. And I canst not let thee fall with me. I shalt clear a path, we must reinforce the legions now. Be ready to follow."

"Thou art as important to Asgard as I," she said as she swung her sword and cut off the head of a demon.

"Aye, to buy thee and the legions time. And I canst no longer survive these attacks for long. We must fall back or we both shalt die to no purpose, and I wilt not have the princess of Asgard fall defending mine back."
He begins fighting back towards the walls, struggling now to make any progress against the horde.

She walked backwards, having his back as he started toward the walls. "I wilt always have thine back. Thou art my brother."

He's struggling to keep any kind of pace, tiring rapidly, swinging more with raw force and wide arcs than any finesse or skill, just forcing more room for them until they near the lines and others can see them.
"Nay, thou wilt not. Thou'rt mine sister, but thou'rt also my liege and lady. Thy place ist not guarding my back."

"I art your sister as well," she said as she put one arm under him and kept her sword moving with the other. "We art almost there."

"Aye, I canst see the line, and hear Hjordis commanding the troops. Twas as thou left it?" he answers, pulling away from her arm. He's weakening, but she needs both her sword and shield or they won't get back to the legion.

Svalin took the lead, her sword cutting to anything that got close and she tried to deflect most of the blows with her shield.

"Aye," she answered, which was only a half-truth. "FOR ASGARD!" she yelled to the troops ahead of her.

He trusts in her judgement, she is the princess, after all, and as odd as Hjordis being in charge seems, he's not going to call his sister a liar.
He doesn't respond to the battle cry either though, right now, all his focus is on cutting a swath that they might get back. The battle remains a fine one, and one he would be proud to die in - but right now, he's not fighting for glory. He's fighting for his sister's life.

Somehow they make it to the lines of their troops with not too many new wounds, but enough. Svalin wanted nothing more than to fall to the ground, but she couldn't. There was still a battle to be fought. She put her hands on her brother and hoped she could heal some of his wounds. Hers would been seen to later. If there was a later.

Another joins them not long after, fighting through the fire demons, pushed back from the combination of demonic magics and Surtur's power, even without Twilight.

"Svalin, Halbjorn, where hast thou been?"

Thor's features darken. "Nay, there canst be no back. I must re-engage Surtur, but need thee to lead a new charge to occupy their sorcerors. When thy sister hast bound thy wounds, thou must return to thy assignment, as must I. I wilt buy the two of thee this time... And Svalin, thou too... finish thy work, and then to thy post."

Dad is /not/ happy.

"It ist as Halbjorn says, father," Svalin said as she takes a second to catch her breath and wipe the sweat and blood from her eyes. "Aye, father," she obediently replied.

"Aye, father." he agrees. He's wounded and exhausted, the rage spent. But if today is his day to die, then so be it.

He lets Svalin do what she can, quickly, then lifts his axe, bellows a challenge as boldly as he can, and rushes back at the demons. The fatigue and injuries show, he may well be at far more risk than before - but his father will reach Surtur, and Halbjorn will disrupt their sorcerors so his father can do his work, so he swears, with his dying breath if need be.

Thor watches his son dutifully charge ahead, even without the madness to bolster his courage.

He looks sadly at his daughter, well aware what this day has already cost.

"I hadst thought better of thee... to the throne, Hjordis cannot command the legions forever, they need a more experienced tactician." he says sadly, before lifting into the sky, rushing to challenge the lord of Muspelheim once more.

Svalin bowed her head for a moment, knowing full well what she did and what it had cost. She looked up at the battlements. It would take too long to climb up. "Hjordis!" she yelled. "Provide cover for us!"

Svalin held her sword in front of her. "Warriors of Asgard! We attack!" With that she charged ahead with the legion at her back.

There is a roar of approval. After having to struggle for so long to hold ground, now that the enemy is repelled for a moment, and there's multiple commanders coordinating, the legions are glad to have a chance to take aggressive action.

They collide into the front ranks of the enemy, surrounding the legs of the giants to reinforce Beta Ray Bill and his troops, clashing with the front lines of the demons to keep the Berserks still remaining from being surrounded while they make their charge into the ranks, and skirmishing with the undead legions, spreading their number thin to be able to still guard the walls while attacking.

The archers guard their flanks, preventing anyone from getting around the lines.

Not expecting the Asgardians to suddenly take the offensive, for the moment, they cut well into enemy forces.
