The Raging Battle
An eerie calm fell over Asgard for a few brief moments. The forces of dark were outside of the shield over the city and were still. Inside the Asgardian warriors waited for the moment when the shield would come down and the battle would start. They were warriors, men and women, caught in an endless struggle against the dark forces that were camped outside the walls.

This would be another battle in an almost endless series of battles. Two forces locked in a constant struggle until the day the last battle came and all would be decided. Today was not the day of that last battle, but it was a day of battle.

The warriors inside the shield had taken up their proper places and waited for the shield to come down. The warriors armed with swords, shields, axes and other weapons were on foot and horseback. Beserkers waited to unleash uncontrolled fury upon their enemies. Magic users stood perched upon high battlements waiting to unleash their spells upon the enemy. Archers also lined the battlements, waiting to rain a storm of arrows upon their foes. Valkyries waited to take to the air to strike at their enemies from above. The battle commanders paced the upper battlements looking out at the forces, dark and light, below them.

Everything was still. Man, woman, horse and enemy. Not even a breeze blew.

The shield came down and chaos erupted.

The rank does break, a trio of frost giants smashing through in a wild rush, followed by a pack of howling dire wolves, tamed by the giants, though still plenty savage.
The legion reforms enough to hamstring one of the giants, and another is stopped to engage a trio of the Crimson Hawks, but the leader charges the wall, smashing his club into it hard enough to crack the stone. A few more hits like that and there'd be a breach.

Svalin saw the impending danger and decided a course of action. She dropped her shield, grabbed her sword in both hands and then went running toward the edge. The air roared in her ears as she flew toward the giant.

The point of her sword was aiming right for the middle of the giant's head.

The giant staggers back, a sword in his head. He tumbles back, dead, falling atop a unit of undead soldiers advancing in their wake, leaving Svalin suddenly engaged with the rest.

There's sudden chaos on the walls as people try and scramble to fill the void and locate the others trained in tactics. Indeed, a lot of eyes immediately look to Aridis to take command.

Gifted with a small measure of the Odinpower that flowed through her father's hammer and with circuits and power cells stripped from the great ship for which it was named, Jill rose into the air with the power of her spear, Skuttlebutt. Lightning flashed from it, striking against the the rushing hordes.

The last of the giants fall under her assault, and the hordes begin to fall back into their lines once again, even as the heavy siege weapons draw up, beginning a long range assault in concert with several sorcerors, some of the mages starting to target the powerful alien.

Jill returned to the battlements, ready to meet the next wave. "Hold the line!" she shouted to the others. "Let none pass!"

As the giants surge, there's confusion in the lines, with parts holding, parts breaking. The Kobinite's commands help, but not everyone is so inclined to trust her judgement as they would someone in their own chain of command, and many are breaking to try and fight their way to Svalin and help her out of the undead press, dividing the Asgardian legions.

Jill, meanwhile, is making a significant target of herself from opposing missiles and sorcerors.

"HOLD THE LINE!" Hjordis yelled. "SEAL THE BREECH!" She raised her sword. "FOR ASGARD!"

"For Asgard!" comes the rallying cry, and men shift to close their lines around Hjordis. The damage has been done, and the lines are engaged, some flanks exposed, but they're beginning to close ranks again and fight outward under the new command, though its a desperate situation.

A hail of arrows rains down on the troops trying to flank the Asgardians. As that rank is forced into retreat, spearmen move up to help seal the weak points in the line, and between Hjordis' command, Jill's power, and Asgardian discipline, as well as ranks returning from supporting Svalin, the legion begins to reform, albeit with heavy losses. On the other hand, the enemy has lost significant numbers as well.

"KEEP FIRING!" she ordered to the archers. "DON'T STOP!"

A ladder was moved into place against the wall. Enemy troops started climbing to the top.

"REPEL THEM!" she yelled and ran toward the enemy now coming over the wall.

A crew moves to repel the invaders, and the archers rain down arrows on those at the base, trying to prevent ascent up the ladder until people can get to it. Several of the archers pause long enough to light their arrows, setting the ladder afire, while the main concentration works on buying the legion more time and cover.

Jill kept her spear spinning, creating a makeshift shield in front of her body, deflecting the projectiles and missiles coming her way. She spun faster, calling on the elements to push back their attackers.

Hjordis attacked the few that had managed to get to the top of the ladder before it was set aflame.

It was an expensive engagement, too many lost, but the enemies are repelled from the wall, and the legions reformed below.

One of the archers points out a couple of figures amidst the demons.
"Lady Hjordis, we have spotted Svalin Thorsdottir... I think her brother is with her. Do we clear them a path?"
It would be dangerous to charge the demon ranks, but might recover the others, or the arrows might be turned to that end, if it can be risked not harrying the enemy - or the princess and prince can be left to fend for themselves now.

"Give them cover with arrows!" she commanded to the archers.

"HOLD THE LINES!" she yelled down to the warriors below. Svalin and Halbjorn would have to get back on their own. Their lives were not as important as holding the city.

"Yes, m'lady." they quickly agree, falling back into position and harrying the enemy as ranks reform, and troops arrive to reinforce the legions caught in the worst of the assault.

While it is unusual for Aridis to be silent she has been following Hjordis' lead. She knew that the younger girl was rallying the men and women up here better than she was capable of.

She did though use her magic to help empower her arrows when she fired them. It was her job to help the people on the ground as best she could after all.
