The Raging Battle
An eerie calm fell over Asgard for a few brief moments. The forces of dark were outside of the shield over the city and were still. Inside the Asgardian warriors waited for the moment when the shield would come down and the battle would start. They were warriors, men and women, caught in an endless struggle against the dark forces that were camped outside the walls.

This would be another battle in an almost endless series of battles. Two forces locked in a constant struggle until the day the last battle came and all would be decided. Today was not the day of that last battle, but it was a day of battle.

The warriors inside the shield had taken up their proper places and waited for the shield to come down. The warriors armed with swords, shields, axes and other weapons were on foot and horseback. Beserkers waited to unleash uncontrolled fury upon their enemies. Magic users stood perched upon high battlements waiting to unleash their spells upon the enemy. Archers also lined the battlements, waiting to rain a storm of arrows upon their foes. Valkyries waited to take to the air to strike at their enemies from above. The battle commanders paced the upper battlements looking out at the forces, dark and light, below them.

Everything was still. Man, woman, horse and enemy. Not even a breeze blew.

The shield came down and chaos erupted.

Vincent sighs heavily, pawing at the bandages still over one side of his face. "I will... have much to speak with my family about when I finally return."

He turns his head back to her. "And you, Asleif? Will you be returning as well?"

"I know not," she said, after a moment's consideration. "Tis... too early to say, I suppose."

"I think Midgard would be for the better to have you as one of its champions." He replies evenly, sitting himself up a bit more.

"As for myself..." Vincent runs a hand through his hair anxiously. "Even beyond that which I need discuss with my family... I feel more and more as though there is no place for me here, even if it is where I am now fated to end. Whether due to my human blood or carrying the cross of the other half of my birth."

He folded his arms across his chest, gaze darkening slightly as he recalls the almost palpable disdain of Asleif's sister.

"Neither of thine parents be well thought of in this realm," Asleif pointed out, though not unkindly. "Tradition and lineage matter much here, locking people into "their place.'" Little wonder few understand or listen to an outsider."

"I suspect I would not, had I not known thee previously," she added, after a moment's consideration.

"We shalt see," she said, on the question of returning. "Midgard hath no shortage of champions, these days it would seem."

"Well, I shall certainly say that I would be better to still have you on Midgard, my friend." He affords her a small smile, before sighing.

"It's not my style to run from a confrontation, but in this instance... I wonder if it's worth anything."

"Shouldst I chose to remain, I wilt miss thee," Aslief agreed. "Though journeys from one realm to the next wilt not be impossible, 'er the bridge restored."

She bowed her head. "Words I hath often considered mineself. I art obeyed, because I doth be royal, but too often art I looked upon with suspicion. Most merely wait the day in which I betray mine siblings and attempt to seize power for mineself."

"Yes, I imagine so."

He cocks his head at her own admissions. "To that end... what are you waiting for?"

"A good question," she replied. "And one I have answered differently, in times past. I once didst desire the throne for mineself, in days when I thought less of mine siblings than I doth at present, but hath come to realize I be unfit to rule."

She shook her head. "Nay, mine own goals art simpler now, to simply become the next Enchantress, to serve well mine home and siblings..."

She smiled, slightly, in a somewhat trickster way. "And have them be beholden to me often."

Vincent shakes his head. "When I was very young, I thought I wanted more than anything to be the high sorcerer of Asgard.. an angry little child lashing out for prejudices against his blood. Now, I can think of nothing more terrifying. It's much easier, and perhaps more self-affirming, to have worked for the betterment of Midgard. This is my homeland, but Earth is my home. The Baxter Building in particular."

He affords her a smirk. "And yes, it can be rather enjoyable to have one's sibling beholden to oneself." He pauses. "Not that I've had that afforded to me very often. Kristoff.. has been my whole world, for much of my life. I think I would have come to very dark paths, if not a small dark cell, if not for him."

"Midgard be a nice place to visit," Asleif said, "but I shoudlst not wish to live there permanently. Asgard simply resonates too strongly in mine blood."

She gave him a bit of a curious look. "Thou claimst Midgard as thine home, and yet thou hath made the choice to stand with Asgard in the end times. Curious, I may sayest so."

"It is where I was born, and coming to its defense was the right thing to do." Vincent says evenly.

"Midgard is facing great danger, it is true, but I trust my family, and our comrades. They will let no true harm come to it." He pauses, drawing up his legs to rest his head on his knees. "My brother, in particular, does not know how to fail his family."

"Thou art a most curious individual at times, Vincent," she mused. "But a pleasant one to know, all the same."

"And yet... what of thine... companion?"

"As are you, Asleif, although I would be so bold as to add 'intimidating' along with curious." He smiles, knowing it's a matter of her nature that she would accept that as a compliment.

His expression darkens, and his hold on his legs tightens.

"Andrea..." He exhales heavily. "Minutes before I was taken, she was turned... human, by means unknown."

"Had I accepted Lord Odin's offer to supplant my loss of divinity in exchange for a greater lifespan and three days in which he would teach me sorcery.. I would still not have been at her side immediately enough in the time of crisis. My feeble flailings in my weakened state nearly lead to her total destruction once already..."

Asleif thought for a moment, giving Vincent a respectful silence before before she continued.

"You doth worry of failing her again," she said. It was not a question.

"Such a lack of confidence doth not become thee," Asleif said, kindly. "Thou shoudlst not concern thyself thusly. I hath the utmost of faith in thee, mine friend."

"My confidence now is not what it was a few days ago." Vincent says casually. "I am as I have ever been."

A pause.

"Although perhaps a bit wiser, and a bit less knowledgeable." He furrows his brow. "I am experiencing... a sense of loss; but of what, I have yet to discern."

"I would imagine so." Vincent nods "At this time however, I fear my body has had a bit too much of spellcraft across it already. I would do tell to wait before having any divinations performed on my person."

He hesitates, then speaks up again. "There is much of the realm I would wish to see before leaving, if you would see fit to escort me."

He smiles, grateful.

"There is one other thing I would like your advice on..." He clears his throat, then his gaze hardens.

"I'm not certain I can bring myself to trust your sister. I can understand her enmity, but I have spent too much of my life endeavoring to convince people I am neither of my parents to take her venom lightly."

He slouches bitterly. "It is not to my liking to avoid a confrontation, but I cannot determine if there is any chance of resolution even in that course of action."

She shook her head. "Nay, you need fear her not, but neither wilt she ever think highly of thee, I suspect."

Vincent laughs dryly. "I would hope so."

He lays back down, turning his head to her. "The irony is in how much smaller a world the golden realm is compared to Midgard. It is not as though I would have more people to impress, but rather that I have less of a world to be lost in."

He does smile however. "But it is not so dreadful a thing, to return to where I was born. Perhaps you would accompany me to visit Lord Hrimhari and Lady Rahne? They and their eldest daughters were quite dear to me when I was young."
