Making Contact
With Nicholas being such a pain in the ass about the stuff with Romanov, Tessa would have to set up a date. Nicholas didn't understand that things like this took time. If she moved too quickly Romanov would get suspicious. The family was suspicious enough, borderline paranoid, and Tessa had to step very very carefully.

She dialed his number.

"Have any recommendations?" He ran his fingers through his hair, smoothing out the waves that were all over after he took off the helmet, and smiled back in genuine pleasure. A single table with two chairs opened nearby and he took it before anybody else could, fine with waiting for it to be cleared. "Worked up an appetite getting down here."

She smiled. "How about I surprise you with something to eat and is espresso okay?" She grabbed the two cups and two small plates from the table.

"Feel free to surprise me any time, and espresso is great." He took his jacket and slung it over the chair back. "Don't let me disturb you. I'll just be over here... watching..." He grinned at her.

Tessa could feel the heat rising to her cheeks. "You're not keeping me. I'll be right back."

Misha made himself comfortable and looked around the place. It smelled wonderful and his stomach immediately wanted food. He didn't exactly watch Tessa like he teased, but he did notice that she moved well, as if she'd had formal dance or martial arts training. He wondered if she could fight. He liked girls who could handle themselves. The damsel-in-distress type did nothing for him.

The smile was still in place when she returned.

"Espresso and chocolate cheesecake. I took a guess and you look like the cheesecake type of guy." She set the items down on the table in front of him. "Is there anything else I can get you?"

"No, I'm all set, thanks." The cheesecake did look good. He wasn't a big fan of it, but on occasion he did indulge.

"I'll be done soon and then you can take me for ice cream and tell me about your trip." She smiled and then went off to clear a table.

Misha ate the cheesecake while watching her work as well as the people around him. He really didn't get to Brooklyn on a normal basis. It probably made him some sort of snob, but if there wasn't a reason, he just didn't go. Most of his friends were back in Westchester and in Manhattan with the teams.

He pushed the empty plate aside and drank the espresso slowly.

Tessa finished up her shift and when she was done, she tossed her apron on a hook in the back and went out to meet him.

"All done for the day."

Misha paid his bill and, as he said he would, tipped well. It was one of the first lessons he learned from his dad. Tip well, even for a beer or a cup of coffee, and get great service the next time.

He carried his jacket and held the door open for her. "So where is this ice cream shop?"

"Just around the corner. Though there's a better one a few blocks over if you feel up for a walk." Tips were what made the job worthwhile. Her hourly wage was almost nothing.

"Let's go to the other one. I don't mind going for a little walk. So tell me about Rome."

He took her hand and tucked it in the crook of his arm. "My brother's class went to Rome on a field trip and I got chaperon. I've spent some time there with my mom and sister, so I got to play tour guide, keep the troups in line, and help them find a little harmless fun after lights out. It was good."

"Sounds like a fun trip. I saw the pictures in the paper," she admitted. Nicholas did too and was not pleased to say the least. "What sights did you take them to see? Were there any problems?"

"Pictures?" That took him aback a moment, but it shouldn't surprise him. Rome was a paparazzi haven. Everyone went to Rome.

"No, no problems. A few tense moments. A group of strong minded kids can make life interesting for the hotel staff, but we did okay. Have you ever been to Rome?"

"Gossip rag," she said. "There were pictures of you and few girls in a club. Nope. New York's about it for me." Which was true. She hadn't been out of the facility much before this.

"Of course, the guys didn't make it into the pictures. That wouldn't be interesting reading." He shook his head. "My life is so much more boring than the papers think. We got back yesterday and I've been sleeping off the jet lag."

"Of course they didn't show the guys. Now see if there was a story on that, you would have been home sleeping off the jet lag with three or four women in your bed," she teased. "Then I'd have to be jealous or something."

Her teasing made him laugh. "Nope, the bed was empty when I got home. No time to stop and pick up three or four women. I'm pretty sure they wouldn't have let me sleep." It felt like a land mine kind of conversation, so he shifted topics. "How do you like the cafe?"

She chuckled along with him. "How did you ever manage?" she teased. "It's okay. It's not a bad place to work. I guess it could be worse. I could be flipping burgers somewhere."

Misha defended the lowly ground meat patty. "Burgers are the world's most perfect food! It's a noble calling!"

"If you're going to be logical about it..."

"My summer jobs always seemed to be working with kids." That was the best way he could describe what he did at the institute. "It's a good thing I like kids."
