The Arrival (Open to Avengers)

-One Minute Ago, Washington DC, Earth 1222-

Justin Rhodes swore he’d never leave his suit unattended again after today.

He lay on the floor of an abandoned house and struggled against his unresponsive armor as he looked up at his father, Iron Man, who was checking the windows for any sign that they were followed to this safehouse. Most of Washington DC was on fire tonight, courtesy of the Avengers, but James Rhodes was never one to give up a fight as long as he had back up

Today was different for both of them.

“Justin, I’m sorry it had to happen like this. I knew you wouldn’t do this if I asked you, so it came down to this. You’re going to live, whether you want to or not, Justin. Your mother made me promise that I’d find a way out for you if this war went south for us; it has, and I did. It was her condition for letting you put the armor on in the first place.” Jim said, a tear sliding down his cheek.

“Dad, we can still win this! Just turn my armor back on and I can help you! You can’t cut me out like this!” Justin yells. He can’t believe his father is doing this to him now, of all times. He thought they were friends, a team. He even thought they were equals, once upon a time.

“I’m your father, Justin; I brought you into this world and I can take you out of it, which I’m doing now. I’ve always been proud of you, son. No matter what happens after today, your mother and I will be always be proud of you. You’re getting a second chance…make something out of it.” Jim says, slipping the Iron Man helmet over his head.

Tony- Cooridinates E-616, Sector 1211. Self-destruct upon arrival.

At that moment, the NIMROD sentinel bursts through the wall of the house the pair have been hiding in over the last hour, and Iron Man turns to face it.

“Tony, get him out of here, now!” Jim barks, lunging at the first cyborg he can see.

The last thing Justin sees before the world folds in upon itself is his father tearing the head off of one Sentinel and blasting another with his repulsor rays.  He doesn’t need to see how this ends, because he and his father both knew what was happening the moment he’d called retreat in New York after Captain America went down. It was all over.

In a way, it was over for him as well.

-Now, Times Square, Earth 616-

A bright light flashed above the New York skyline, then quickly descended toward the Earth. Many of the onlookers were too transfixed to realize that the falling object was headed toward them. The ones who figured it out fast enough had a head start on the panic and running.

Justin was barely conscious as he went through a series of passcodes in his armor, bringing all the systems on line, and tried to ignore the fact that the ground was rushing up to meet him faster than he liked. By the time all of his systems were online, the readouts were all bad news. His heart monitor was in the red, he was at forty percent power, and he was currently about five-thousand feet above the ground. Time until impact: 30 seconds.

“Tony, divert all power to thrusters, get me out of this nosedive, now!” Justin commanded, trying to turn and right himself in mid-air so as not to become an Iron Pizza in the middle of…

Where was he?

The closer he got to the ground, the more he recognized this city, but something was wrong with it. The were undamaged buildings, lights and from the look of things…lots and lots of people.

Living people.

Where the hell am I?

-Thirty Seconds Later-

“When I get home,” Justin muttered, “Dad and I are going to have a long talk about mid-battle surprises.”

He climbed out of the wreckage of the Stark Enterprises truck (he’d find time for the irony later) and tried to right himself. His left arm was numb, and his chest hurt like hell, but he didn’t have time to worry about it. He had to get off the streets and get somewhere safe.

“Are you okay, War Machine?” a little boy asked, the first person of a crowd of people who’d found their way to his location. He held a War Machine plush doll under one arm.

“I’m…I’m good.” he panted. “Thanks. Hey, where did you get that?”

Before the little boy could answer, there was another flash of light, this time from ground level, and a metallic voice spoke into the night.

JUSTIN ANTHONY RHODES. You are hereby charged with one count of unlawful dimensional travel, 672 counts of fleeing from justice and 1,992 counts of aiding in a terrorist rebellion against the rightful government of the United States of America.”

Justin and the little boy both looked at the NIMROD Sentinel at the same time; the boy stood frozen in fear and Justin’s eyes narrowed underneath the helmet.

“Kid, go back to your mother. Right now. Tell her to tell everyone here to go home now.” Justin said.

“You can beat ‘im, War Machine.” the boy said before he ran off.

I’m glad one of us thinks so.

How do you plead?” the Sentinel asked.

“Guilty as charged. Get to the sentencing portion.” Justin said.

You are found guilty under United States Penal Code 21832.673. The punishment for your actions is death. Prepare for sentencing. You may speak your final words.” the robot said,

“Uni-Beam.” Justin said, diverting power to his chest plate. The beam lanced forth and slammed the Bio-Sentinel through the glass window of the Sach’s department store thirty-five yards behind him. Luckily, the place wasn’t opened yet, so it could be damaged without cost to innocent bystanders.

“EVERYONE GET OUT OF HERE NOW!” Justin yelled, waiting for the Bio-Sentinel to make its move.

Justin's legs felt like lead, and he felt like he was swimming through molasses, but he couldn't let the Sentinel hurt anyone.

He strode toward the Saks department store and readied the canon at his shoulder to fire. One good laser blast to the chest would take down its processing core and render it useless.

"Tony, lock target on the processing core for this Sentinel. We don't want to damage it too badly. I may need to use it to repair the armor so I can get back home." Justin says.

That Sentinel should have been up by now. Justin gets to the window of the Department store looks inside.

The pulse cannon blast blinds him and now it is his turn to go flying back toward the street, sailing over the hood of an oncoming car and crashing through some tables and chairs at an outdoor cafe across the street.

"This..is not my day." he says, trying to pull himself back to his feet as NIMROD walks out of the remains of the department store window and looks for where War Machine landed.

"Call me insane again, but doesn't that look like...." It couldn't be. Toni was gone and Uncle Rhodey had given up the suit.

Steve frowned. "That's definitely a War Machine suit," he said.

He hefted his satchel, which contained his gear. "Get the mansion on the horn. I'm gonna change and see what I can do."

Submit, War Machine, and your sentence will be executed without undue suffering on your part. Nimrod said.

Justin took a deep breath and pushed himself to his feet. He lifted his arm, and watched as the laser targeting sight lined up on the reddish-purple area on the Sentinel's chest.

There were still too many people around them, some screaming and running, others still gawking at the fight before them. What was wrong with these people? I

It's like they're used to seeing armored men and robots fighting in the middle of their city, or something.

Justin's AI gave him a green light to fire, and the miniature semi-automatic wrist gun fired at the Sentinel. The robotic behemoth rocked back for a moment, surprised, but then lifted an arm and the bullets ricocheted harmlessly, hitting car windows, building windows and grazing a woman a few yards away.

Justin cut off the firing and hit the thrusters on the suit, ignoring Tony's warning that the suit only had twenty-seven percent power left...and the painful twinge in his chest saying he'd been in armor too long.

Nimrod watched Justin come and simply batted him aside mid-flight, slamming Justin into a wall not five feet from where Anya and Steve were located.

Humans, move away from the fugitive. He is dangerous and will not hesitate to use lethal force against you. Nimorod warned.

He did not consider either human a danger at this point.

Justin looked up at Anya and Steve...or tried to. The world was still spinning. "Sir....take your friend...and go. You're both in danger." he panted.

He tried to get back to his feet as Nimrod advanced on all three of them.

"On it," Anya said as she was already sending a signal to the mansion. In addition she activated her new suit and ordered it to lock on her signal.

"I've got a better idea," he told the downed armor-wearer.

Some of them still had a vague secret identity to protect, but it didn't take much for Steve to slip his mask, belt and gloves on, hurriedly throwing his quiver and scabbard over his shoulder.

He quickly selected his most powerful explosive arrow and let it fly at the robot.

Nimrod advanced to within ten yards of the group when Steve's arrow it. The arrow took the Bio-Sentinel's left arm off at the shoulder, and it sparked and popped as Nimrod re-evaluated the trio.

"Self-repair nanites engaged. Shields operative." the cyborg said, before looking directly at Steve.

"Aiding the fugitive is prohibited. Under U.S.Penal Code 21438.232, aiding a fugitive makes you an accomplice, to share in the fugitive's sentence."

Nimrod lifted his arm and fired three red-colored concussive blasts in Steve's direction. Steve would also see that the arm he'd severed was quickly being regrown by the Bio-Sentinel.

Justin was still trying to get to his feet, but he yelled to Steve.

"Aim for the chest! The reddish looking thing on his chest is the power core! Take it out, you take him out!" Justin said.

Anya wasn't paying much attention to the fight. She was accessing her armor's on board computer. She gave the order to fire missiles. A moment two rockets came streaking in toward the android.

Steve dodged out of the way of the blast, nearly getting singed in the process.

Robots. Great.

He launched another explosive arrow to the thing's chestplate.

Anya's rockets streak toward Nimrod and while Nimrod manages to avoid one by the slimmest margin, the force of the explosion beside him batters him into the path of the second rocket. The Sentinel's shields save it from the worst of the damage, but one of its legs is battered by the barrage, causing the monstrosity to lumber off balance and fall to a knee.

Anya's rockets also have the added effect of weakening the shields momentarily to expose the robot's chest plate.

Steve's aim is true, and the arrow hits reddish-purple plate at the center of mass, blowing the creature's torso into several pieces. The remainder of the creature topples over and slams into the ground, twitching somewhat before it finally stops moving.

Justin looks at Anya and Steve and is suddenly reminded of two people he knows very well from home.

"Great shooting, you two." he pants, allowing himself to collapse against the wall again.

Anya landed her suit next to the destroyed robot and blasted it with an EM pulse just to make sure the nanites couldn't repair it.

Anya rushed to...War Machine's (really?) side. "Hey stay with us," she said.

Steve bent down next to War Machine, keeping a war eye on the rubble of the robot, just in case.

"You okay, dude?"

"I'll...I'll be fine. Help me get the helmet if off?" he asked.

If they did so, they'd see that Justin looked a good deal like Rhodey himself, but his eyes weren't as hard and serious as Jim's could be. This guy was also very pale, his skin wet with cool perspiration.

"My heart gets a little weird when I'm armored up for too long...just need to rest a minute." he says, trying to catch his breath.

The pain hit just all at once, and he could no longer feel his arm. He gurgled slightly, then slumped a bit more before his eyes closed completely.

"Of course this wouldn't be easy," Anya grumbled. There was the problem of leaving the robot and getting him back to the mansion with the suit on. "Let's get him back to the mansion. I'll get him out of the suit and take him back. Because you're an official Avenger, you want to stay and watch over the robot until SHIELD gets here?"

Steve nodded. He wasn't too bothered by Anya's calling the suit. Her choice to make, if maybe not the one he thought she should.

"Yeah. I'll meet you back there."
