Good Food, Good Times
Justin Rhdoes is tired of lying in a hospital bed. His sister (he's still getting used to that) has had a tougher time of it than he has, so he doesn't think it's right for him to stay cooped up in a bed. After showering, getting dressed and "asking" to be allowed some time to himself, Justin takes Tony, his A.I., and decides to go see New York for himself.

He's still awed at how new everything looks here. This isn't a world ravaged by battle and bombs, and the people walk around here without a care in the world for their safety. Justin's awed by all of it, never having seen this many people in a single place that weren't hiding for their lives. After several blocks of walking, though, Justin feels fatigue set in. He curses his weak heart for the millionth time, and decides that food and drink are in order, since all he's eaten is infirmary food over the last week. He's got a bit of money as well, a gift from Rhodey.

He still doesn't know if the man likes the idea of having a son, and he still hasn't meet Miss Potts, his mother.

"Tony, locate nearest restaurant. I want a burrito." he says. He hasn't had a burrito in months.

Minutes later, he's in line at a place called Chipotle, trying to decide if he wants steak or pork.

He's tempted to order both.

He smiles at her, wondering what it would have been like to grow up with a little sister instead of being an only child.

"That's awesome. It's cool that you two are close." he says.

"It's hard not to be close to her. She's a really awesome person. Given the people we grew up around the fact that she's as so purely good as she is is kind of amazing.:

She smiled at him.

"Tell me about your family. It sounds like you had a much more balanced and happy childhood than mine."

"Well, my dad has always been a tough man, but fair. He always expected me to do what was asked of me, and to give my all to whatever I did. We worked together on a lot of things, so I had that respect for him.

I was closest to my mother, though. She and I could talk about any and everything, and I'm not always good at saying what I feel. Mom could pull anything out of me, and explain it to where my Dad understood it. She was our go-between." he says.

"My uncle and I were closer than Dad and I. We're both big gear-heads and love building thing and making them better. I learned a lot from him before he passed away." Justin says.

She noticed the past tense.

"Are your parents...are they still in your life?"

Shit.

He didn't even realize he'd slipped into past tense when talking about home. There was no way to explain that he'd been shipped here by his Dad before they dropped the bombs on New York. Christina would probably run to her car as fast as her legs could carry her.

"Oh, yeah. They are, but things have changed since I was a kid and they've...divorced. You know how people stay the same, but somehow change? That's what happened to them. You'd never know they were together at all by looking at them now. Oh, and me." he says.

"I just saw my dad not long ago while I was in the hospital. We talked. I haven't seen my mom yet, but I'm sure I will." he says, trying to come up with another topic of conversation.

"What's the name of the club we're going to? Is there a waiting list to get in there, too?" he asks with a smile.

Something prickled at the back of her neck and while she couldn't exactly place why since she was willfully not reading his mind, she felt something was dishonest. She shrugged it off though. Maybe he was just hurt by his parents split. It made sense.

"It's called Blue. And no, no waiting lists. It's a pretty down to earth place. Not everything I do is A-list."

"It's not A-list on purpose, but it's classy because you do it. At least, that's what I'm sensing." Rex says with a smile.

"Blue. Sounds like a place that knows the crowd it's catering to. I'd like it if we could dance a little bit while we're there. I can't overdo it, but I'd like to show you a good time." he says.

"You're already showing me a good time, but I'd love to dance with you. I promise I'll be gentle."

Her smile was flirtatious but also really soft and she found her eyes lingering on his for a moment before she dragged them away and to her food.

"I...hope you're having a good time."

His eyes definitely focused on hers a lot longer than they should have, but when the contact broke, he also went after his food.

"Christina, I'm having a great time. This is a lot more fun than I expected. I'm really glad we're doing this." he says, taking a bite of his steak.

This place was definitely all she made it out to be.

"This is great, Christina." he smiles. "You have amazing taste."

And eyes, and legs and...

"I kind of hope we can do it again."

Way to jump the gun, genius. He's going to think you're a crazy nutjob now. Good going. Thumbs up. Ever wonder WHY you're single?

She took a bite of her food, having already demolished the potatoes and heading for the steak. For a thin girl, she had no shortage of appetite.

"Same here." he says, digging in with abandon. He hasn't had a good steak in years, and while the food at the Avengers' Mansion is good, they didn't give him certain foods while he was on the machines.

"Yes, I want to do this again, Christina." he says.

"Awesome."

Her eyes lit up, though she took another bite of her steak to keep herself from asking if tomorrow was good for him. It'd been a long time since she was just at ease with someone, especially someone as attractive as he was.

"We should get desert, too."

"I normally don't have too many sweets, but...do they have cheesecake here?" he asks. Cheesecake was a staple of his life until he was about five, and then he wasn't able to have it, save very special occasions.

"Is Tuesday or Wednesday a good day for us to hang out again? I'd offer tomorrow, but...I'm going to visit my mother." he says.

"They have the best cheesecake ever here. It's so good, Justin. So good. And both of those days are good for me."

Any day was good for him. Unless she got called away. But for him...well, she was already entertaining the idea of skipping. Maybe.

"I should let you plan our next adventure."

"Hm. I've got a couple of ideas in mind already, but I need to make sure they're viable." he says. A picnic in Central Park might be fun, he thinks.

"Then let's have some cheesecake after this wonderful dinner." he grins, continuing to eat.

"Already ordered it. I figured if you didn't eat yours I would. I'll just run it off tomorrow."

"Sorry..."

She works out. Justin tries not to imagine that, and her foot along his ankle takes his mind off of that before she stops.

"Hey, it's cool. I didn't mind at all. Can I call you something other than Christina? It just feels so formal." he says.

"When I come up with a good one, you'll be the first to know. For now, I'll stick with...Tina." he says, opting to go with something not everyone calls her.

The brush against his leg makes his heart race a little, in a good way.

"Can I ask you a personal question that you're completely within your rights to not to answer?" he asks.

"What was it like when your abilities first kicked in? Did you just know the toaster was broken and that you could fix it, or did you have to experiment?" he asks.

Tina. She rolls the way he says it over and over in her mind, locking it in and smiling broadly.

"I like that a lot, Justin. And I don't mind the question. You can ask me anything, really. I just...sort of knew things were broken. My sorta step father spilled scotch on his laptop when I was ten. And I just...fixed it. He was surprised."

"My sister is a mutant, which is why I ask. That's also why I have no issues with you being a mutant." he says, his voice low. For all that he's okay with mutants, he knows that there are people who aren't.

"I've always had an affinity with machines, but mine comes from lots of work and study. I've been building things since I was little. Did my first motherboard at five, and my first engine block at eight.

If I'd gone to college, I probably could have finished school with honors." he says.

The contact between them is nice, and he smiles at her.

"You're a person just like anyone else, Tina. Doesn't matter if you can do a little something extra. Besides, I've got about a thousand broken gadgets that could use the attention you gave my watch." he jokes.

"Really, though, I'm here with a person who happens to be a mutant, not the other way around." he says.

"There are people who would see it the other way, including most mutants. I know there's a lot of talk about Mutants are People, Too but there is a huge amount of sentiment that we're mutants first. I guess there's a lot of 'us' who definte our very being by the things our DNA lets us do. Frankly I've spent my life trying to avoid the various things I can do. I have three manifestations and one of them is difficult to control. It makes day to day a bit of a challenge."

"Well, I have known a few mutants in my life, and some have it easy, some have tough, but all of them are people, are human, even if they won't admit it to themselves.

It just seems like it would be something to embrace, rather than run from." he says. Of course, he's human, so he has no clue what mutants go through, except for the persecution from his own world.

"Now, if only more people would start standing up for mutants, we could gain some momentum to effect change." he says.
