Spring in Moscow
Natasha walked slowly through the elaborate gardens on the palace grounds. Her nephew Mikhail had wanted her to sit in on a meeting, but the day was too lovely to not be outside. The sun was a balmy 60 degrees. Natasha smiled as she inhaled the perfumed air and soaked up the warm sunlight. Bright flowers in bloom surrounded her and added to the tranquility of the gardens.

It was much better than sitting in on a meeting.

She had used her pregnancy as an excuse and told her nephew she wanted to nap for awhile. Jet lag and pregnancy not mixing well or something along those lines.

The beautiful setting of the gardens helped to take her mind off of Ivan. The old man's health was in decline and Natasha worried about him. He was in his nineties and still had a sharp mind, but time was catching up to him. His body was beginning to fail him and Natasha and Ivan both knew he didn't have much time left.

There was a tightness in Natasha's chest at the thought of losing Ivan. He had been with her for her entire life and she couldn't imagine life without him. Ivan had been her only family for many decades. He was the only father she had ever known. He was a grandfather to her children.

She was so enmeshed in her inner thoughts she almost didn't notice the small fluttering feeling in her abdomen.

Natasha stopped walking and concentrated. She couldn't have been imagining it. There. Another one. Natasha smiled. The baby was moving and she just felt it for the first time. She just wished Tony could have been here for this. Still smiling, Natasha started walking again.

"I know, Mom. You're a little trooper and we're proud of you." He patted her hand, his expression all Dad dealing with a cranky female. "If you really need to shoot somebody, you got me, darlin'."

"Thank you, honey, but if I shoot anyone at all it will be the one responsible for getting me in this condition." Natasha sighed. "What I want is coffee."

"I could order you some decaf so you don't shoot him. He might not live through it at his age."

"Oh I'd make sure he'd live. I won't be able to keep up to all of you by myself. How's Lyta? You said you were in New Orleans to see her."

He managed not to tighten his grip on her hand, but he couldn't stop the tremor from adrenaline drain and lack of sleep. In normal life he was a pretty good liar, and an even better stonewaller. He would simply not talk about it even when asked a direct question. The second family lesson Logan drummed into him was never to lie to his parents. Refuse to discuss, okay. Do not lie.

He gave her a tired smile and released her to go back to eating the now cold food. "She's fine. Keeping busy."

"That's good to hear. And your brother and sisters? I get calls from them, but you know I like to hear it from someone else."

"Last time I talk to Anya she was enjoying having her own team. James is doing okay. I never hear from Eliza but I assume she's okay." He picked up the bottle of imported beer that came with his meal and took a drink. "Dad's good."

"I was just about to ask," she said. "Give this old woman time to get to things." She smiled. "Then again you kids are usually a step or two ahead of me."

"We try. You might have a shot with the new kid, but that'll only last so long." He gave her a half smile.

"Smart lady like you? You probably have it written in blood on the back of your marriage certificate." He finished his plate, feeling better for the meal. Mom smiling and happy was also a relief. "I didn't ask how Mikhail's wife is feeling. I hope we're still going to see a prince soon."

"I'm happier about this one. It means less pressure on us and a lot less complications," she told him. Taking the throne was something she didn't want to do again.

"I know. So I'll be going back tomorrow after I see Grandpa Ivan again. Any messages or butt kickings you'd like me to pass on if I don't see you before then?" He probably would, but he heard pregnant women spend a lot of time napping and resting, and disturbing Mom was unthinkable.

"Yes ma'am." He smiled at her tone of voice. "I will. Take your time and enjoy the visit. You have your husband here, no kids to interrupt for a few more months, you should enjoy it while you can."

"I miss New York," she said. "It's time to go home." While she had been born in this country, home would always be New York. It was where her family was.

"I missed being here to support you and do my share of the royal family duties. It's important. I can't ignore the fact that I might still be here in a hundred years and need to take a more active role in things."
