Saving the Kids
Irina had to concentrate on the image that Lyta had sent to her, but after a few moments she had been able to open a portal to a spot just inside the main building. Her knives had been out and ready when she stepped through. They went flying through the air heading toward the two guards that had been standing near the door. The knives hit them in the chest and they fell to the ground. Stepping through portals and into trouble was quite common for her.

"Let's go," she called back to the others.

Misha's cursory look around the room turned up the body of Alexei Shostakov. Surprised and in shock, he was rooted to the spot next to a man that was supposed to be dead months ago.

He was somewhere else in his head and beyond hearing what was happening in the hall.

Irina took the offered hand and stood up. She nodded her thanks and then entered the room. She was immediately at the side of her father's body and checked his pulse. There was one, but it was faint and unsteady. Irina wasn't sure if she should be relieved or upset that her father was still alive.

Still she couldn't just leave him here. He was her father and he didn't deserve to die in this place. Carefully she started to pick him up.

"Irina...who is that?" Did the facility kidnap scientists and force them to work on the children, she wondered.

Misha moved to stop Irina. He didn't look at Lyta while he answered her question. "It's the son of a bitch who was married to my mother. The one that kidnapped me in the name of Red Room and thought it a lot of fun to torture me. Electroshock. Surgery without drugs just so he and I could see what was inside me. Experimental drugs. You wanted to know what I have nightmares about? Him. He's supposed to be dead."

Irina stopped and glared at Mikhail for stopping her. "His name is Alexi Shostakov. He was once the Red Guardian of Russia. He is my father," she answered as she glared at Misha.

Lyta felt her stomach twist into a knot, as she stepped in between the two of them. She didn't know what to say, but just shifted her gaze back and forth between the two of them.

If he had done all of these things to Misha...to those kids...she wanted nothing better than to just leave him there to rot. But...the fact that he was Irina's father meant something, as he was somewhat important to her..

"I will not leave him here," she said. "I do not think he will ever wake, but I will not leave him here to die. I will find a place for him." She stepped past Misha and picked up her father.

"He's a monster!" Misha all but shouted at her. "Did you see those kids?!"

"Irina, Misha, please," Lyta said, "Irina...I understand not wanting to leave him to rot, but he can't just go free, comatose or not. We should hand him over to people that will make sure that he can't harm anyone else every again in the case that he DOES wake up."

Irina turned on a heel and glared at him some more. "He is my father!" she shouted back. "Monster or no. As if you have much room to speak, Mikhail Loganovich! Your father is not much better as he has slaughtered many in his long life. You would not leave yours to rot in a place like this!"

"Goddamnit, will you just STOP?!" Lyta heaved a sigh, rubbing her temples, "It's her father, Misha. And Irina, you can't just let him off the hook for this. If you don't want to leave him here, you have to leave him with the right authorities that'll make sure that he can never do something like this again."

"You didn't see what Nicholas did to him!" Irina yelled. "He has suffered enough! The least I can do is put him in a place that will take care of him until he dies."

Misha didn't miss the fact that Irina ignored his accusation, and in Misha's eyes she wasn't any better than her bastard father now.

"Whatever Nicholas did to him, he deserved worse."

"Misha, please." She didn't know what else to say. She wanted to kill Alexi for what he did those kids. For what he did to Misha. But Irina was her friend, and as much of an absolute douchebag that the man lying in front of him was, he was her father. You couldn't deny blood.

"He is my blood. I take responsibility for him," Irina said as she carried her father toward the door. She didn't look back or wait for them. "Come. I will take you home first."

Misha beat back his rage to speak as calmly as he could manage to Lyta. "Go on. The kids are the important thing. This place is going to be rubble before I leave."

Lyta nodded. She looked at him over her shoulder before she made her way down the hallway, back to Argo, Cory, and the kids.

He looked back at her before putting the helmet back on. The faceplate slid into place and the onboard computer flashed the current status across the interior screen. He was fully functional and weaponry at full power.

He waited until he knew they would be gone before searching the base to make sure there were no children left. There was no way he'd ever trust the Russian woman, not when she was obviously sympathetic to her bastard father's activities. Maybe she'd been there when Red Room had taken him in. Maybe he'd sent her to do it. Maybe she had provided all the children they were torturing here. If he ever found that old bastard, Misha would tear him apart with his hands. It was that simple.

He reached the lower levels and found the labs. Hate tinged with nightmare fear filled him. Through it, common sense told him that the computers and equipment might have clues to where he might be able to find Weapon X and the people who did this. There could be evidence against Irina as well. He would damned well preserve THAT and use it.

He directed the onboard computer to open a communication line to S.H.I.E.L.D.'s head office. "This is Mikhail Romanov. I need to speak to Valentina Fontaine. It's an emergency."
