Waking Up
Natasha tried to open her eyes, but her eyelids felt like they were made of lead instead of skin. She managed to open them for a second before they fell close again. Another try and this time they remained opened for three seconds. Yet another try and she managed to keep them open for longer.

She groaned. The last things she remembered were Tony hoisting her over his shoulder and her laughing. Then pain, heat and blackness. What the hell happened? Where was she? Where was Tony?

Her eyes opened again and she blinked a few times. The brightness hurt a little and everything was a little out of focus and blurry. She blinked a few more times.

	"He's still in isolation an' he's gettin' the best care on the planet. I chased the kids out again today so yer stuck with me for another couple of hours." "Kids are fine." He put a hand on her shoulder and let the weight keep her down. "Mikey's watchin' out for them, an' I'm here. If ya tell me I'm not good enough for the job, I'll drug ya myself."

Kidding. Mostly. They had a dangerous life. Contingency plans were already in motion.

His hand didn't move as he went down the laundry list of injuries Stark sustained. He recited the list in a even, matter of fact voice, ending with, "he's critical but stable, an' nobody but the staff is allowed in yet. The possibility of infection is real. Soon as the doc gets here to check you out, they'll tell ya about more about it."

"Right now they're sayin' months for recovery, but they are talkin' recovery. He tried to save ya, Tasha. Fury said he took the worst of it, so he'll take the longest." A tissue was taken from the box at bedside to dry her tears.

"In the meantime, the kids have been kept close an' protected when they're not here. Everybody's on alert until Fury finds out who did it an' why. Potts an' Rhodes are handlin' the company, an' Rogers is takin' care of the Avengers."

	"Damn fool man. He doesn't have a healing factor," she said with no heat behind her words. "Thanks," she said as he wiped her tears away. "Have there been any attacks on the kids?" "He tried callin' Anya, but she an' the others were attacked on that base. They're open season out there, Tash. It's not safe. They're all in the city now until further notice." "Rogers is dealin' with them. It was Temujin an' some group that attacked before. They're all back in the city where back up is easier to find."

Now for the arguing. "You can when the doctor says you can get out of bed, an' then it's the observation window. Anya an' James have been campin' out in front of it when they're not waitin' to see you or takin' care of other duties."

"Steve's good at riding herd on the kids," she said as she started to sit up again. Hearing Termujin's name put some energy and determination back into her. She knew the kids wouldn't be in the mansion long. Not after getting a taste of independence and freedom from being under the adults' eyes.

"I'm just sore," she said as she started to remove the IV. "Need to move."
