Another Piece of the Puzzle
Julian Howard's day is going, according to his notes, exactly to plan. Two days after his meeting with Emma Frost and Roberto DaCosta, both agreed to aid him in his plan to remake the Hellfire Club. With two powerful allies backing him, Julian feels he's scored a major victory, but this is not enough. He needs to bring another potential ally to his cause.

"Mr. Howard, I contacted Viveca van Roehm." Paulo Seganti, his manservant, says.  "I informed her that you requested her company today, and the food will be ready when she arrives."

"Thank you, Paulo. Please bring her in as soon as she arrives." Julian says, settling back into his chair to wait.

When Viveca arrives, she's in her favorite black leather again, but this time, she was not worried enough to wear the gloves. If he were going to Try Something quite like that, he'd have tried it by now.

Not that she can't still go for his throat if he does try anything, she reminds herself. But the paranoia has been eased slightly by his previous behavior.

She's right on time, and now the somehow butchly-prissy Italian guy is ushering her in. "Hello."

Julian rises from his desk, coming around the table to shake Viveca's hand when she enters.

"Thank you for meeting with me, Viveca. I'm glad you could make it." he says genuinely.

"There's food and drink on hand if you're interested. Otherwise, we can sit down and discuss business. I came across some information that may or may not interest you." Julian says, indicating a manila file folder on his desk.

And she shakes firmly.

"Black coffee and something with a little bit of protein in it would be great if you've got it," she admits. She looks over at the folder, though. "What kind of information?"

"Paulo, please?" Julian asks. Paulo leaves and returns shortly with a pot of coffee and some eggs for Viveca. Julian will wait until Viveca's satisfied before addressing the folder.

"Well, it's a bit of information I came across through a contact of mine. It seems Benedict Kine is trying to get a friend of his into the jewelry business. It wouldn't have caught my attention except for a couple of things. The first was that Regan Wyngarde is his silent partner in the venture; she's setting him up with distributors from Sierra Leone who want to put out high-quality merchandise.

Like I said, not the thing that first caught my attention." Julian says.

"The thing that made me want to bring this to your attention is where the shop is intended to be. Please look at page three." Julian says.

If she does so, Viveca will find that the shop in question 'Dorian's' is slated to occupy a couple of buildings no less than three blocks from Viveca's own outlet.

"It's one thing to fish in the same pond as someone else. It's quite another when it looks like they're trying to push you out of the water all together."

"Thanks," she mutters. It's good coffee, and good eggs, and she eats efficiently and politely before turning her attention to the folder and the explanation.

And she keeps her face steady as possible. This takes a lot of effort, and there's probably plenty of signs that she's agitated, but they're subtle.

"...Yeah. Okay... so someone who really creeps me out in the first place and someone who's just annoying seem like they're purposely trying to screw me. Not that they'd succeed, but they definitely seem like they're trying. You figured right, this kind of garbage is relevant to my interests. What's the next part of the conversation?"

"The next part of the conversation is where I offer to deal with the people who creep you out and annoy you. I'll also offer you ownership of this little venture they've got going so that you can shut it down or build upon it as you see fit." Julian says, making himself a cup of coffee.

"As a bonus, I'll even offer to address the one pulling their strings who allowed this to happen in the first place. I'm certain said person knows what you do for a living, and could have told both Kine and Wyngarde to back off. He didn't, so he either thinks you can't stop them, or that you'll just roll over and let them do what they want.

Then Regan will probably 'offer' to put Kine in his place for a favor at a later date. So you either accept and owe her for stopping something she set in motion...or you refuse her and look disrespectful." Julian ponders.

"Now, I can't say that's really what she's thinking, but why even back Kine to start, unless she's angling to move someone out of their position and put him in it? He's a good little boot-licker and controllable. Benedict Kine is a piece of human garbage, and that's the nicest thing I can say about him.

Do you really want to see him end up as White Bishop or some such?" he asks her.

She listened to him carefully.

He had a point. Kine wanted his creepy mitts on her in one way or another, Regan was trying to use her, and the buck for underestimating her stopped with Shaw.

"I don't like seeing him at all," she said quietly. "You're making a lot of really nice suggestions, Julian, but technically speaking, those aren't offers, they're --whatstheword-- 'invitations to deal'. Offers, technically, mention what the other person's job is in the deal."

"Well, let's discuss that, Viveca. You don't like Kine, and while yesterday, I could have taken him or left him, I recently have reason to want the man out of the way. So, I'm going to handle him in a way that befits him. His proclivities run toward the deviant side, so I'm going to make him hang himself with all the rope he's been given.

Your part in all of this is simple, and two-fold. First, you just have to let Kine and Wyngarde think they're at the height of cunning, and that you don't see their little ploy coming." Julian says.

"I'd like them so focused on their own cunning that they aren't watching their flanks. Kine, especially." Julian says with a note of distaste in his voice.

"The other thing I'd need from you is your support at the next gathering. I want your vote when it comes time to discuss my ideas for the direction our organization will take in the future." Julian smiles.

Viveca listens intently. One could almost see the figurative perked-up points of her ears.

"Okay. I can play dumb and keep them interested. And if you deliver on everything you've said regarding their penny-ante parasite tag-team, you've got a blank check with me for all the policy stuff."

Julian nods and smiles, counting his supporters in his mind. He'd gone from two to three now, and he's certain Emma can deliver on the fourth. The plan is proceeding, but he just needs to get the right people in their places for the master stroke.

"Excellent, Viveca. I'd say we have an accord, then. And once the dust is settled, there's going to be room for upward movement. Shaw and Wyngarde have a pretty good idea with their continued support of each other. I could use that kind of backing myself. I'll keep you in mind." he says.

"Again, just keep them occupied and leave the rest to me." he says.

"Gotcha. They won't hear you over the sound of their own smug." Viveca knows she's no chessmistress, but she's fairly sure she can play a lot dumber than she is, with her business matters as well as her personal behavior. "I don't mind bleeding in the water just a little as long as you're on time with the shark hunting. And the future could work out, yeah." She stands.

"Thanks for the talk, thanks for the snack. Good luck." She extends a hand again, and the grip's even firmer this time. Uncomfortably so for many. But she manages through force of will to keep her nails from going clawish.

Julian accepts the handshake, noting how much firmer it is this time. Perhaps Kine and Wyngarde had really bitten off more than they could chew in going in against Viveca. Julian briefly considered offering the murder of Kine to Viveca, then decided against it.

He'd outsource the job, and make sure it got done right.

"Thank you. And I'll be along with the shark-hunting, as you called it, shortly." he says. "I'll have Paulo escort you out."

And once she has gone, Julian makes another phone call.

"National Rifle Association, anti-solicitation division. How may I help you?"

Julian blinks a moment, then wonders if he dialed the correct number. He did. Ah, one can't order hit-men like Chinese food, now can they?

"Hello, I was wondering if you had anyone available for private lessons and if they can be available on demand. A friend of mine is going away on business soon and I'd like to get him a lesson or two before he goes away." Julian says.

"I trust this friend of yours is going away for a long, long time? We do have someone available... but you understand, our lessons are very exclusive, only for the very best... as such, they're also quite expensive. Oh, and are these lessons for professional or personal reasons?"
The last, of course, is just Kelly wanting to know if this is supposed to be a quick, clean hit... or if its supposed to hurt. Some clients liked that personal touch.

"Yes. In fact, I don't think he'll be returning home after this. He's having a going-away party, so I thought it would be good to provide him some last-minute entertainment before the party. If he's having too much fun to go to his own party, so much the better." Julian says.

Translation: Make sure they can't find the body.

"Price isn't an issue, so I'd like the best available. And while this an office party and should be professional, he's done so much on behalf of our organization that I wanted the touch to be special. The longer it lasts, the better it is before he goes...so long as he goes on time." Julian says.

"I guarantee we'll be punctual. We will, of course, need your friend's name, address, and half up front. We understand that you're much too busy to meet in person, so Box 192 at the New York central post office has been set up for remote business. Please make sure we have pictures of your friend, plus any details related to the job, so we make sure that there's no mistakes. The price for the very best deluxe, personalized entertainment package is $400,000. After this job, of course, we're going to be very booked for a while. You won't want to contact us again for at least six months. So... do we do business?"

"All the necessary information will be provided to you in two hours' time. Also, he'll have some items for you to provide to me once his session is over. I'll include a bonus for having that information delivered upon completion of his training.

My friend is also known for bestowing personal gifts on those who treat him well." Julian says.

"If your calendar is booked after this, that's no issue. I think we have a deal, however." Julian says.

"Our calendar will be booked. Its best we don't work for the same clients too often, not always good business. Detail the items and information you need on a page left in the P.O. box. It will be checked within the day. I guarantee satisfaction with the job done."

She checks the time - good, under trace time limit. Always good to be on the safe side. Not that she doesn't trust Julian - she tries to check up on anyone who would have this number, but she tries to be thorough.

"Pleasure doing business with you." she adds, before hanging up and bouncing off to tell Mel the news. Red pays well, but it never hurts to have some supplemental income.
