Contact
Tessa hadn't heard from Misha in almost two weeks. She knew why he hadn't called, but she couldn't lose contact with him. The mission depended on her keeping in contact with him. Not to mention Nicholas had been nagging her about keeping in contact with Misha. The man was impatient as hell and a pain in the ass.

Not wanting to hear any more from Nicholas and being genuinely concerned about Misha, she dialed his number.

The security desk had already called up to warn Misha he had company coming. He'd paused in chopping ham and vegetables for the omelets to wash his hands and answer the door.

"Hi," he said when he opened the door. "You made it."

"Hi," she said with a smile. "I did and I brought apple pie." She held up the pie for him to see.

He shook his head at her. "You coming was enough," he told her. "Come on in."

"I couldn't come empty handed." She entered the penthouse and paused as she looked around. "Wow. This is some place."

"I can't take any credit for the place. It was a gift from my mother." Misha took the pie from her. "Gym to the left, kitchen to the right, living room, library and terrace to the front. Bedrooms upstairs. Look around if you'd like."

"It's still pretty amazing. All this space for just you?" she asked as she took in every detail.

He smiled at her wide-eyed expression. "My brothers threaten to move in with me at times, but only when the girls get too crazy on them. You have to remember my mother part time raised two kids here, and one of them was a Stark. You don't raise a Stark in anything less than the best. She just didn't need the place after they got married, so I received an early inheritance."

"Lucky," she said. She took a few more steps into the place. "This is...wow." Then she blushed. "Sorry. I've never been in a place like this and it's just amazing."

"You should see my cousin's place." Yeah, the palace trumped all. "Take a look at the view on the terrace while I get dinner finished. There are drinks in the fridge and the bar in the library is fully stocked."

"A place fit for a prince," she said with a smile. "I've seen pictures of the Russian palaces and they were very beautiful."

He chuckled a little. "They are, and pretty intimidating. Anya and I are plotting to introduce Mikhail to some fertile princesses if we can find some and move the succession line to their kids."

"It has to be intimidating to be in line for a throne," she said as she wandered around the penthouse. "You seem to be handling it well."

He went to the kitchen with the pie and slid it into the fridge, and removed a beer. "It's not real," he called while he returned to chopping healthy stuff for the omelets. "I grew up here. The only kings I know of are sports heroes. And I have Mom as a buffer. If Mikhail doesn't have kids, she's the next in line."

It's not that he wouldn't if he had to; he knew the meaning of duty. He just didn't want to get that far with it.

She followed him to the kitchen. "Got an extra one in there?" she asked nodding toward the bottle of beer. "Need any help? I can't cook, but I can chop."

He paused to get her a beer, removing the cap and handing it to her. "Here you go. You're my guest. Have a seat and relax. You were at work all day. Your turn to be waited on for a change. You can even stretch out on a sofa or in one of the rooms upstairs for a nap if you want."

"Thank you," she said and accepted the beer. "If I did that, I wouldn't get to talk to you." She watched him chopping the food. His skill with blades was easy to see.

"Talking to me is overrated," he said with a straight face. He'd learned kitchen knife work from the experts - Iron Chef episodes. It was all in the muscle memory and keeping track of all your fingers.

He was tired himself, but having company was helping him relax. Pretty, easy going company that didn't expect him to be more than who he was at home.

"What have you been up to the last two weeks?"

"I like talking to you," she said and then took a drink from her bottle. "Work. I've been working as much as I can. How's your family? What's the prognosis on your Mom and your step-father?"

"You know, I haven't any idea." He set the knife down, washed his hands and went to the fridge. A printed schedule was held in place with magnets. "Next game is a week from Saturday. If everything goes all right, I'll be back at practices this week."

"I'm sure, I'm sure." He gave her a mock evil eye and took a carton of eggs, a block of cheese and the carton of cream from the fridge. "Relax. You'll love this, and you'll be happy to know my dad taught me to cook. My mother can hardly boil water without burning it."

"Hrm... how to answer that..." He began assembling the omelet mixture. "My mother can make coffee that'll crawl away and fend for itself in the wild, and one dish very well. She can make blinis. Anything else, appliances begin to smoke."
