Labor Day - Avengers
The air was warm and the sun was bright making it a perfect day for a cookout to celebrate Labor Day. Classes would start on the 8th (for those going to college they started a week ago) and it was the last chance to kick back and cut loose before hitting the books.

At the Avengers' Mansion in NYC Jarvis and some helpers he managed to rope into helping with the preparations were busy getting the food ready. Tables had been placed out around the pool and the large grill fired up to get nice and hot. Burgers, hot dogs, sausage, ribs, corn on the cob, pasta salad, salad and fruit salad were just some of the food available to eat. Soda, water, fruit juice and other beverages were on ice.

To help get to know each other the Thunderbolts received an invitation to attend.

It was a day of rest and relaxations for those who put their lives on the line for others.

"Little bit, and I did some checking on the internet too," Stevie replied. "Same kind of crazy brilliant as my mom, same kind of origin and all, one daughter, 'nother kid on the way, couple of step kids, married a woman who tried to kill him on multiple occasions..."

She trailed off, realizing who she was talking to. "Uh. Sorry."

At least she hadn't mentioned the terrible, nightmare inducing porn 'stache.

"The press exaggerates. I only really tried to kill him twice, and he deserved it." Tony says. "No offense taken."

Tony chuckles a little bit.

"Oh, and for the record, no matter what I, or anyone else tells you after today, Tony /really was/ working on Zero-Point Energy when the diaper situation came up. You will hear about this from him. It is important that you believe him. He may even try to admit that he was using those diagrams to learn how to change a diaper, but I know my husband.

He does not need diagrams to know how to change a diaper." Tony says.

Now that Tasha has "admitted" to his working on Zero-Point Energy, Stephanie will back him up. Hopefully.

And Eddie heard it too, so that makes it three-to-one against Tasha.

Okay, that was an odd story. Stevie wasn't quite sure what the point of it all was, but the zero-point energy thing caught her attention.

"I hope he's stopped working with that," she said, suddenly quiet.

"Rhodey's daughter, Jenny, was field testing a zero-point powered suit. The Masters of Evil caught up with her and in the fight... it exploded. Killed her and them instantly. And took a five mile crater out of Newark."

"The process is far more stabilized here, Stephanie. Zero-Point energy is a wonderful source of energy with varied uses, so you have no need to worry. Our daughter...your sister, Anya, does a lot of work with it, as does Toni Rhodes' brother, Justin.

You will meet them soon and they can show you that there is nothing to fear." Tony says.

"Where are you staying right now?" he asks.

"No offense, ma'am," Stevie said, "but you'll understand if I don't trust it."

"But I've been living here at the mansion," she went on.

Natasha came back to find Tony talking a new addition to the mansion residents. She felt bad that he gotten sick, but she had warned him about the vileness of relish.

"Are you okay?" she asked as she put a hand on his shoulder. "We can go home if you like."

"Well, I would like to go home, love, but...Tony, you need to meet this young woman." "Tasha" says.

"She has some important information that will affect our family."

"Stephanie, will you tell Anthony what you've just told me?"

Well. This was... awkward. Making a concentrated effort not to think about the horrible, horrible porn 'stache, Stevie took a deep breath.

"Mr. Stark," she said, "my name is Stevie Barton. I'm from another universe. But I'm also... kind of... your daughter."

Ew ew ew.

"My parents are Clint Barton and Antonia Stark."

Because switching bodies with her husband wasn't absurd enough...this happened.

"It's nice to meet you, Stevie," Natasha said. "This is definitely a surprise for all of us. Though it is a nice change of pace. The other dimensional visitors to our family have been Natasha's up until you."

Tasha would handle this without vomiting, wouldn't she?

"Yes, all of my children have been blessings, and welcoming one of Tony's is a welcome change of pace." he says, with a sincerity he doesn't quite feel. He's still trying to get this all worked out in his head on how she'll work in the family dynamic, and how Anya will react to her. Part of him really doesn't want to tell her, especially now that Tony knows who Stevie's parents are.

"Stephanie...have you met Clint yet?" he asks.

She shook her head. "I heard what happened to... ah, his son," Stevie said. "I figure somebody like me is the last thing he needs right now."

"I'll be honest with you, Mr. Stark," she went on. "I... don't exactly have the best relationship with my mother. My folks are divorced, actually. But I'm not looking for a replacement parent or anything. I just kinda figured... I dunno, really."

Natasha nodded. "It may be wise not to see Clint for awhile," she said. "Having a child disappear is hard." Unfortunately she was talking from experience.

"First, please call me Tony." Natasha had gotten a little used to answering to Tony in the past week. "It happens. Sometimes a parent and child don't get along well for awhile." She had the own situation with her own son at times. "How this goes will be completely up to you. You can decide how things are going to be. Though if you do need anything, please let me or Natasha know."

"Yes, Stephanie. If we can help you, we will. It might be good if we set up a time to talk more about everything in detail before we introduce you to the rest of the family." Tony says.

Tasha was an old hand at dealing with wayward children, whereas Tony was not. Speaking of wayward children, he reminded himself to find a way to contact Misha about his project. If Tasha found out about that, it would be a nightmare.

"I'm not looking for handouts or anything," Stevie assured Tony. Mentally, she decided to file him under 'Not the Mama.' "Long as I've got the roof here over my head and somebody can fix my gear when it breaks, I'm good."

That and trying to get home, but that was pretty implicit.

"But you wanna talk more, I'm game for that. They'll find out sooner or later, I figure."

"While you're here, you're family and we take of our own," Natasha said. "If you need something please don't hesitate to ask. I'm sure your gear isn't a problem. There are enough mad geniuses around to help with it."

She put a hand on Tony's shoulder. "I'm sure we can set up dinner or something. You can meet the rest of the family. Misha, Anya and Eliza."

"And James, love. But yes, I would like it very much if we could take this slowly. We want you to feel welcome, Stephanie, but Tony is right; we take care of our own." Tony says.

He's just never going to be able to call her "Stevie". She's too pretty to be a "Stevie". She's not a tech-genius, which will take a little getting used to but it's nice to have a little variety in the family.

A part of him wonders if Stephanie is some kind of preparation for Eddie. Eddie will be a blank slate and like Stephanie, is coming into a world he knows nothing about. He simply hopes that Eddie and Stephanie are much less...active than he is, in some ways.

"You're family, Stephanie. We just hope we don't send you screaming for the hills too quickly." Tony grins.

Well-drilled politeness (and you know, not wanting to offend the people who can seriously mess up your life if they want to), kept Stevie from correcting Tasha on the name thing. She usually didn't let many people call her Stephanie.

"Slow sounds good to me," she agreed. Even if she did usually like to take things fast. Likes cars. And guys.

"And... thanks. Both of you."

"You're welcome," Natasha said with a smile. "Now if you'll excuse us, I want to get Natasha home. If she doesn't put her feet up, they'll swell too much. Then the complaining will come."
