Smoke and mirrors
Sammy was supposed to be resting, but she knew it wouldn't work. It would only make her stiff. The effects of the battle with the Monster Truck Boys on her all-natural-no-additives human body guaranteed she'd have bruises for awhile. She'd only said she'd rest so she wouldn't end up in Medical for her own good. She didn't like Medical.

Instead she paced behind her closed bedroom door, using thinking as a way of distracting her body from the discomfort, She found herself contemplating the small, white sphere that Qamar said didn't belong to him. It sat on her desk looking harmless.

She picked it up and went looking for the impossible but likely solution. Nightingale should still be around.

"If you say so," she says, shrugging. "But HYDRA's terrorists don't walk into crowded shopping centers to blow themselves up to make a point or to get a single target."

"Oh please. HYDRA once killed hundreds of newly graduating S.H.I.E.L.D. agents in one explosion because of their hatred for my father. Just because it hasn't happened since doesn't mean it won't."

"Hundreds of newly graduated SHIELD agents is tragic, yes... but they were SHIELD agents. How many innocent civilians have my enemies killed, for less reason even than that?" Her eyes narrow through her mask.

"Do you know what they did to Qamar? Just because he wanted justice? Do you know how many days they held on to him to torture him?" She steps forward towards Sammy. "I will not allow him to face that again."

Sammy didn't retreat. She was incapable of backing up. "You're getting aggressive with the wrong person," she said bluntly. "I can't know what they did, I wasn't there. You were. All I can do is read the reports and learn from them."

She turns away, deflating somewhat.

"There will be no report," she states simply. "Reports can be leaked."

Which made no sense. Sammy had read the report of S.H.I.E.L.D. finding Qamar through an anonymous tip. There are always reports, totally fabricated or factual. They were out there. One only had to look in the right places.

It occurred to her that Nightingale was probably a little crazy, and not in the fun-at-parties way.

"I like Qamar. He's a good friend. I won't let anything happen to him."

"I'm glad to hear that," she responds. "He thinks very highly of you."

She seems to shake off whatever was sticking in her mind, and she turns back. "I am sorry you do not understand. But if you had been there, you would understand the need for secrecy."

"I understand it. We Furys have a long history of ignoring it."

She shrugged. "All I needed to know was where the smokebomb came from and why a mild-mannered college student had it and lied about it. You and I don't have to like each other, but we are teammates for the time being. Aside from the general stress we've got here, I didn't need to make it worse by asking my teammate's boyfriend out to a movie. If I'm not making it worse, the subject can be closed."

She turns to go.

Since there would be no getting the last word in, Sammy didn't try. Nightingale seemed determined to work the Batman mystery shtick for all it was worth. Who was Sammy to stand in her way?
