Repercussions
A middle-aged man in official looking uniform of some European fashion arrives at the Baxter Building.

"I am here to speak with Kristoff Vernard and Vincent von Doom, on behalf of the monarch of Latveria, Victor von Doom."

Roberta called up. "Doctor Vernard, there's a Latverian consul here to see you and your brother." Roberta... pauses. "Shall I ask him to leave?"

Kristoff and Vincent happened to be in the lab together, looking some things over.
"...No, Roberta. Please ask him to wait a moment."

He looks to his brother.

Vincent raises his work-goggles, and swallows down a comment.

"Let's go."

And downstairs they head.

"Good afternoon."

The man raises fingers to his monocle, clearing his throat as the younger men appear.

"Young Master, Doctor Vernard. Thank you for your time. I will be brief." He produces an ornately marked parchment, extending it, after a moment's hesitation, to Vincent.

Vincent hesitates as well, before taking the parchment. No palpable magic, no gentle hum of even the thinnest circuitry.

There was also the matter that it bore the Latverial royal seal. It would have been distasteful for it to be booby-trapped.

He unrolled it, reading it carefully, and keeping his expression controlled as the color drained from his face.

"He wants to speak with us." He turns to Kristoff, showing him the details. "It's a letter of safe passage across the next seventy-two hours."

"Check the wording. Are you certain it refers to both of us?"

Wording was, unfortunately, very important.

Vincent nods. "It's laid out very plainly." A beat. "As plainly as he would give dictation for anyway. You're referred to by name and title specifically."

Kristoff nods, then looks to the gentleman from the consulate and nods again. "Thank you."

Latveria

It was mid-morning, Latverian time, the next day when Kristoff and Vincent entered Latverian airspace. Besides talking to the ladies, there had been a great deal of reassurances to give the American bureaucrats regarding the two of them returning to Latveria so soon after the recent unfortunate events. The usual Richards-backed reassurances worked their magic however.

At Vincent's decision, they set down near the front of the castle, marching to the front door, leaving the Fantasticar in a holding pattern rather than park it at any of the castle's facilities.

Vincent gave cordial smiles to any passing commoners, and a stern gaze to the guards, as he gave a nod to Kristoff.

Kristoff walked with him, very surprised himself at being back here so soon again, all things considered.

Guards exchanged looks before opening the gates. Boris awaited them in the finest wheelchair Doom's science could devise.

"Young Masters, this way please. The Master has breakfast ready for you."

Vincent gave Kristoff a glance, shook his head at the absurdity of all this, and followed the old man.

"Thank you, Boris."

Kristoff no doubt takes the absurdity in a little differently than Vincent does, although he understands his brother's position. "Thank you, Boris." And he'll follow.

Doom is already seated at the table when the other men arrive, and true to Boris' words, breakfast, including fresh banitsa and tea, are on the table.

He watches as his.... as Vincent steels himself, sitting down at the opposite end of the table, raises a glass defiantly, and downs the juice in it.

"It would be a foolish errand to try to poison one such as yourself to begin with, Vincent. Such displays of nerve are unnecessary and childish besides."

Vincent's jaw tightens and he takes a long breath, before putting his hands on the arms of the chair.

Doom's gaze turns to Kristoff. "Vernard. In returning to Latveria, you defied my proclamation. Doom's law."

Kristoff has to just stop for a moment and smell it.

Then he meets Dooms, eyes. "Yes, Sir. Not lightly. It would be difficult to argue that my safety was more important than that of the country."

"In the unlikely event of another absence by Doom, you would do the same?"

There is perhaps, to those who would know his speech patterns, the slightest trace of genuine curiosity.

To say that Vincent is distraught is putting it mildly. He goes right to his room, securing himself inside with a protocol that only allows Kristoff to enter. He then promptly crawls under the covers and goes into the fetal position, his mind spinning.

Doom had known about him all along, and he still.....

Someone had helped him escape Latveria and he didn't know who or why.

He'd been given a country.

It was all just too much. It was too big.

A small part of him, buried under the grief, did note that it was not his fault that Kristoff had been banished. Kristoff had told him that for years, but it was something else to actually hear it from him.

The younger man sits up to lean against his brother. "He said there were going to be duties... and a proclamation.

I know it's not a big secret that I'm his son, but I've been able to keep it out of public knowledge, even with the incident with the Super-Skrull...

That's over."

Vincent decides it is better not to list the ways at Doom's disposal that he could force him to comply with demands.

He blinks, then nods, facepalming as Kristoff points out out how obvious things must have been to begin with.

"Even if it takes decades for him to die... I'm not fit to lead a kindergarten class, let alone a country. Even with your help."

"You can't let what may happen twenty years from now panic you. You have no idea what the circumstances will be then." A cutting remark about how one can always hope Ragnarok comes first gets figuratively beaten, bound, and gagged and shoved in the back of Kristoff's mind with, well, Doom.

"We can appoint appropriate people, at the very least."
