Repercussions
A middle-aged man in official looking uniform of some European fashion arrives at the Baxter Building.

"I am here to speak with Kristoff Vernard and Vincent von Doom, on behalf of the monarch of Latveria, Victor von Doom."

Kristoff has to just stop for a moment and smell it.

Then he meets Dooms, eyes. "Yes, Sir. Not lightly. It would be difficult to argue that my safety was more important than that of the country."

"In the unlikely event of another absence by Doom, you would do the same?"

There is perhaps, to those who would know his speech patterns, the slightest trace of genuine curiosity.

"If Latveria appeared at the mercy of internal strife or a possible four-front invasion, most certainly, Sir," Kristoff replied evenly.

Silence, save for Vincent's utensils on his plate, consumes the hall.

"Vernard, sit."

He waits until Vincent finishes his mouthful.

"Vincent. There are things I am about to tell you that have never been revealed to you. I trust you are old enough, and educated enough--" His eyes glance to Kristoff. "--to understand now.

Your birth was not unknown to Doom. Your mother, the Enchantress, sent word when she was with child. She stated you would be staying in her care in inflexible terms. There was no need to challenge her rights as your mother, nor any inclination by Doom to storm the Rainbow Bridge. More than that, an infant is not easily defended from enemies such as Doom has accumulated. You were safe."

A pause.

"You are a child of prophesied fate but also mortal blood. The timing of your arrival in Doomstadt was either fate or coincidence. There was no plan of Doom's at work in its doing."

His gaze flicks to Kristoff again.

"Your departure however..." One gauntlet tightens on the arm of his own chair. "In no way were you capable of penetrating the magical shields around Doomstadt, not at that age and not at that point in your tutelage. Someone facilitated your flight. Doom has knowledge of the few who could, and would, have done such a thing, but there has never been proof."

Vincent has gone pale, but has maintained his calm like a rock with water flowing over it.

"You are not the children you once were."

He openly looks between both of them.

"Doom is the monarch of Latveria, and Latveria is all that is Doom.

You, Vincent, by whatever name you deem fit to saddle yourself with, are appointed from this day forward, Regent of Latveria. Should Doom truly be absent, it's reigns move to you." A pause. "At such time, you may bring with you whomever you see fit to aid in your duties."

Vincent's face twists with confusion, shock, and anger. He nearly knocks the chair over as he stands upright, hands gripping the edge of the table, as he opens his mouth as if to speak.

There is nothing but a tiny strangling noise from his throat as he forces the scared and hurt child back into the box it belongs in.

His nails dig ruts into the wood as, shaking, he keeps silent, nostrils flaring and eyes wide.

Kristoff listened. For someone so grandiose, the Master had to be so subtle. No doubt his poor brother was tearing himself up finding presumed insults in this, and Kristoff would do all he could to soothe him at such time as Vincent was willing to accept it -- not in front of Doom.

But Kristoff was hearing something else entirely.

Doom had known he had a son. And that fact had had nothing to do with the situation of whether to forgive Kristoff. What he'd told himself time and time again all these years was true. There was no need for bitterness and recriminations. These things just happen.

He continues listening, and certainly knowing the truth of the change that had come with the years.

And as Doom magnanimously gives them permission to do what they had, in fact, just did two weeks before, Kristoff can't help a small, loving smile, which he conceals politely by sipping his tea.

"As will befit your new station,--" Doom continues, "--you will be informed if there are any duties expected of you on Doom's behalf."

There is a pause for that to sink in.

"As for you, Kristoff Vernard.

It is not befitting of a monarch to forgive betrayals...

..but neither is it for one to ignore their debts." Doom draws in a breath. "For one week, each year, in observance of Mirela's death, you are permitted within Latveria."

Calm though he remains, Kristoff can't quite hide the slice of pain across his face at the first sentence addressing him.

But the last...

His eyes shut slowly, then force themselves back open. "Thank you, Sir," he says softly.

"There is nothing to thank." Doom's response is cold as he returns his focus to Vincent.

"A public proclamation of your new standing will be made in due time, but soon. You will--"

Perhaps it is weariness from the recent events. Perhaps it is the weight of his years. Or perhaps Victor von Doom is simply not sure of the full measure of the man he is addressing, as well as that of the one listening. Whatever the reason, if there is any, he changes his choice of words.

"It would be wise to now behave accordingly." He looks at the son of his union with Amora, before standing.

"Myriad responsibilities beckon. You are free to partake of the remainder of the mark's safe passage. Boris will see that you receive your due hospitality."

And, with that, Doom walks away.

When Doom's gone, Kristoff manages to shake off his own thoughts enough for his hands immediately go for Vincent's shoulders.

"Phral?"

There is almost no response from Vincent, his eyes seemingly glossed over from the effort he exerted not to let the maelstrom of emotions out. As if he burned out.

"We're leaving." It is barely more than a whisper, as he stands and moves with a tightly controlled, but slowly increasing, pace from the room.

He simply will not allow himself to be sick in Latveria.

Kristoff doesn't need to hear any more for now. He departs with him.
