Happy Birthday!
Natasha opened her eyes. It was morning and she was actually waking up on her own instead of to the cries of her son. It was a very rare occasion. Maybe sleeping a little extra longer was Nick's birthday preset to Tony. She turned over and was not too surprised to find her husband still in bed. So far he had been up with her each time that Nick woke her up.

"Happy birthday, my love," she said as she leaned up on an elbow and kissed his cheek. "Moose and squirrel." There. She said it. For him. For his birthday.

“You’re a lucky kid. Do you know why?” she asked as they moved through the kitchen. “Because this is one pretty amazing family. We’re not a conventional family, but it works for us. Mom and Dad are both pretty darn amazing and you’ll be the first legitimate kid. Of course you are a Stark, so you’ll still be a bastard. All Starks are bastards and we like it that way.”

“Your siblings are pretty amazing too,” she continued. “Misha and James are dorks, but they’re really great brothers. Just don’t tell them I said that. It will go to their heads and they won’t ever let me live it down. You can always count on them being there for you when you need them. Eliza is a great sister and like the brothers dork, she’ll be there for you too. I don’t know Stevie that well, but that’s because I have my own /issues/.”

“A best friend is vital and you need to get one as soon as possible. Next week would be good,” she joked. “Toni is my best friend and has been since I was three weeks old. It’s a Stark and Rhodes thing, which unfortunately you won’t have a Rhodes around your age. I don’t think Uncle Rhodey and Aunt Monica are going to have any more kids, but that’s okay. You will find a best friend and you’ll always have someone watching your back. I don’t what to think what life would be like without Toni and I don’t want to.”

“If you decide to kick bad guy ass like others in this family, you’ll get some enemies. It’s part of the whole suit thing. It sucks, but it’s life.”

“You’re a Stark, so you’re going to do stupid things. It’s a universal law or something. So if you’re going to do something that you know you shouldn’t be doing, don’t get caught. You should be smart enough not to get caught, but if you do be prepared to pay the consequences. Oh and always learn the rules so you can break them properly. That’s important. And if you lose, don’t lose the lesson.”

“I’ve made some great Stark screw-ups already, but I paid the price for them,” she said. “I learned some valuable lessons from them. Which is the whole point. Learning from your mistakes. You can also learn from Mom and Dad’s mistakes. They’ve made some doozies, but they’ve learned from them and so can you.”

“The media will always be a part of your life because of who you are. You’re a Stark, but you’re also Russian Royalty. Expect to have cameras and photographers around at all times. That being said, reputation is what other people know about you. Honor is what you know about yourself. Guard your honor. Let your reputation fall where it will. And outlive the bastards.” Anya smiled. “Dad gave me that advice when I was very young so now I’m giving it to you. Don’t worry, I give it to you again when you get older.”

“When you start dating come and see me. Or Mom. We can tell you what girls really want and what you need to do. I know Misha and maybe even James will want to give you advice, but guys will never fully understand girls. Mom and I will give you tips on how to shop for girls too. Chocolate is always good, but it’s not the only thing. And don’t worry; I’ll give you lots of practice carrying bags for a girl. It’s an important boyfriend role.”

“You will find The One one day and when you do, well never forget how special they are and never let them forget how special they are. Even when you think you have things all planned out, they’ll come along and shake things up. It’s not a bad thing. Your life will be better for it.”

“Just remember that even the greatest hero can be a consummate idiot when it comes to affairs of the heart.”

“If you do decide to go into the family business of being a hero, there are two important things to remember. If you can’t do something smart, do something right. A great team is important and treat them like they were your family, because they will be. The Avengers are awesome and so are the Thunderbolts. I’m lucky that I have three great families.”

“I think it’s time we see if I can stop walking and put you down in your bed. You’re already tiring me out and you’re less than a week old.”

Anya walked over the bassinet which had been moved out into the living room for this evening. She kissed his forehead again. “I love you, Nick. I promise you that I’ll always be here for you and will always have your back. No matter what.”

She carefully placed him in the bassinet, making sure to lay him on his side. “Sweet dreams, Little Man.”
