Working for a Living
He wanted a job. A regular sort of job, that you could work hard at but not have to worry about much. Delivery for the plant store was perfect. Running around making sure people got what they paid for in a timely fashion. Flexible hours wouldn't interfere with helping out the Avengers or walking Kassi to and from school, and he was pretty damn qualified for getting things places fast, if he did say so himself.

Well, what do you know. Second day on the job, and he already had a really interesting one. Three Venus flytraps to Andrea Denker at the Baxter Building of all places. Not bothering to hide his ankles since he wasn't escorting Kassi, he made his way quickly there, rang the buzzer, and told the lady at the desk whom he needed to see about signing.

Andrea had decided to take up botany as a hobby, in an effort to further develop her interests. Her course-load at ESU was going nicely and so far her responsibilities as a member of the Fantastic Four had no overly interfered with her studies.

A true photographic memory helped, of course.

So when Roberta alerted her that she had a package, she came down directly to collect it.

The ankle-wings were a surprise. "I am Andrea," she said.

He looked up from the checklist and -- whoa.

Andrea was a really, really beautiful carnivorous plant owner.

"Umm. Afternoon, Andrea. I've got your order for three flytraps. If you...um... could sign right here, please."

Well.

Andrea hardly considered herself a worthy judge of human attractiveness, but right now, programs and thought strains that had not cycled in some time found themselves unfolding.

"...Oh, yes," she said, as she approached. "Thank-you. I had no expected this to be in yet."

He smiles, nodding. "Just made it to the shop half an hour ago. They're looking healthy and stuff." Oh, very erudite, Mac. "So is this experimental or, um, ornamental, or both?" He asks, holding the pen.

Andrea returned the smile. "That is good to know," she said, as she took the pen, signing in neat letters.

"A little of both. I am considering botany as a hobby and carnivorous plants seemed most interesting."

"Pretty cool. If you get real into it, you should try maybe getting some Corkscrew plants. I ...um... don't know the scientific name or anything, but the eat like, underwater germs." Damn. He wishes he knew the scientific bits so he could explain it and stay longer.

"Corkscrew plans?" Andrea asked. "I do not believe I have heard of those, but the sound fascinating."

"Yeah. They're in wet areas and estuaries and stuff; real neetch growth and all." Mac never quite pronounced 'niche' right. "I'm Mac." He managed to bring forth the wherewithal to say.

"A pleasure to meet you Mac," Andrea said. A thought string brought up a name she had heard Vincent and Franklin mention before, matching it with the winged feet.

"You would be... MacKenzie Rider, then?"

Mac blinks only slightly before realizing how reasonable that is to deduce. "Yeah. Just back in town after a long time away."

Andrea smiled. "Well, welcome back to New York," she said.

She wondered why Vincent and Franklin found him so objectionable. Mac seemed like a very nice--and attractive--person.

"There were some good games this season," she agreed. "Though I am afraid the Mets did rather poorly."

"Well, I guess I was spared having to see that, then. If the Yankees did well, please, just don't tell me. There's always next year. And maybe my Knicks'll manage."

"They failed to make it to the World Series at least," Andrea said, with some measure of satisfaction.

"I have high hopes for them as well."

It took Andrea by surprise, but she was more surprised to discover it was a pleasant one. She smiled.

"I would like that very much, Mac."

She accepted. Oh gods. Awesome. Mac smiled. "Great. I'll call. Well, um, I'm guessing you don't need help getting those upstairs, and I'll probably need to check back in at the shop soon....."

And he nods, and smiles, and excuses himself...literally walking on air.
