Dinner Conversation
Qamar smiles across the table at Sammy as the waitress takes the menus.

"Thanks for coming, Sammy. I'm... glad my... friend didn't scare you off."

Qamar laughs. "They had Arabic Sesame Street in Egypt," he admits. "And my dad liked me watching it. But he didn't exactly arrange a lot of playdates, unless you count me hanging out with the kids of his co-workers. But they could be much older or younger."

"Sesame Street is another word for brainwashing. Control the world's children by having the Cookie Monster and Oscar tell them to not eat their vegetables. I'm more of a Muppet Show gal. And G.I. Joe cartoons. Did your dad have a poker group that was really only an excuse to get together and complain about the women?"

"Well, we had different muppets. On Alam Simsim, we have Khokha, who shows that women have educational choices. That sort of brainwashing in Arabic countries might not be so bad." Qamar smiles a little. "As for the poker game... he never remarried after my mother died. And I never heard him say a single ill word about her."

She gets that tingle that tells her she's strayed into unknown territory. She'd read Qamar's file, but it was just words.

"Dad's only complaints are that Mom makes him eat his greens and occasionally chews him out for minor things. During one of those infamous poker games, Mikhail Romanov and I got caught smoking one of Dad's cigars. Mom lowered the boom on Dad for not paying attention. We were eight."

He laughs. "Dad was a doctor, so I think he'd have flayed me alive if he'd caught me smoking." He chuckles. "Did your dad consider you smoking a cigar a 'minor thing'?"

"He considered it a kid thing to do." She smiles at the memory. "We were stupid, we got sick, and as far as I know, neither of us has touched one since. I take it your dad wouldn't have thought of it like that?"

"You could say that," Qamar admits, rubbing the back of his neck. "He was protective... and almost Western in a lot of ways. He was very Muslim, but he was also very progressive." He smiles. "He was an incredible man. I think you'd have liked him."

"I like you and all evidence says you're one of the good guys, so I would've liked him as well."

He smiles. "I don't know how he would have felt about me leaving Islam, but... I think he would have understood."

"May I ask, what exactly does that mean?"

He frowns. "I'm not Muslim," he explains. "I mean, I was raised Muslim, but I just don't follow the faith anymore."

She nods, but she still has questions. Too much curiosity is a good trait for a spy, bad one for social settings. "S.H.I.E.L.D. is the only religion I know," she says. "My parents are both lapsed Catholics from long before I arrived on the scene. We go to church at Christmas and Easter, but that's it.

"Do you believe? Or is it just tradition?" he asks.

"It's a family tradition. We do it together." She frowns. "It's not a subject that ever came up over the dinner table. Why did you leave Islam?"

He shrugs. "It's a beautiful religion and all... I just didn't feel it was for me anymore. I was questioning it before, but then..." He pauses. "Let's just say that I had trouble believing in a fair and just omnipotent Allah after what happened with my father."

"Your friend mentioned a little about it and how the two of you met," she says quietly. "So did your file."

There, she admits to having checked him out.

He nods. "Probably not a lot," he admits. "I... don't like talking about it. I'm... sorry. It's not... easy for me."

"Then don't talk about it. There's time if you ever want to." They need another topic fast. "Tell me about your childhood sweetheart."

He pauses for a moment, and looks up at her. "Um... Well... let's see. How to describe her? Beautiful... strong... passionate... and she's someone I'd like to tell about what happened... someday." He gives her a smile. "And she's sitting across the table."

It takes her a second to catch up after expecting something completely different. She blushes again, from her hair to her neckline.

"Oh. I...uh..."

She leans into take his hand and the activity around them pauses. Her control is good, but adrenaline has to go somewhere and it trumps all. But she's not alone this time.

"The crazy really doesn't scare you? The overprotective father? The gun fetish?"

"Crazy's just a matter of perspective," he replies. "It's you I like. And for you... I can deal with the other stuff."

"I like you, too." She grins at him as time resumes around them. "'Louis, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship.'"

She did say Bogey was a big part of her childhood thanks to Dad.
