Christmas Eve Will Find Me Where the Love Light Gleams (Avengers)
Christmas. Yule. Saturnalia. Dies Natalis Solis Invicti. Many cultures have celebrated and still celebrate a winter festival. There have been many names for it over the millennia. No matter the name it is a time to come together and celebrate with feasts and gifts with friends and loved ones.

Each culture has a legendary figure who would deliver gifts to children during this time. In Russia and some Slavic cultures he is known as Ded Moroz, Grandfather Frost, and comes not on Christmas but on New Year’s along with his granddaughter Snegurochka, or ‘”Snow Maiden”. In the United Kingdom and other parts of Europe he is known as Father Christmas. In the Netherlands and Belgium he is known as Saint Nicholas or “Sinterklaas” and in France he is known as Père Noël. In the United States we know him as Santa Claus.

No matter the name or who is delivering gifts, it is the season of peace, joy and togetherness. It is the season for thinking about loved ones, friends and those less fortunate. It is a time to witness the goodness and generosity the human race is capable of. It is a time for peace on Earth and goodwill toward man.

James was a horrible shopper. He never knew what to get anyone in his family let alone the Avengers. What he did give each and every one of them was a pass to miss one training session of their choice. They also got the newest iPod and a fifty dollar iTunes card.

Valeria and the family he would give them their gifts on Christmas Day.

Well, crap. It was Christmas and she was still here. Not-the-Mama and the stuff on her birthday had gone a ways to making her feel more welcome, but this definitely wasn't home. Her parents and friends must have been going out of their mind with worry.

Not to mention she now had a brother to deal with, who she was trying her best to avoid until she could deal with the fact that said brother was banging her "sister."

Still, Stevie had given the majority of her teammates a "coupon" redeemable for free auto-work, a coupon for one day of no smart-mouthed insubordination for James.

And as for MC? Well, it was a long standing tradition for any gift exchange between the two of them (and had been since they had become friends when MC had let her chauffeur her around in her Power Wheels car), that Stevie always got MC car parts or accessories. Running gag. There was also, since they were still stranded, an offer to go shopping.

Considering how miserable this holiday had the potential to be, MC elected to hide car-related things in the traditional box of shoes.

Stevie set out to, and did, find MC. "Hey, you."

It was not the merriest Christmas Toni had ever had. With several of their friends still gone (especially Charlie) and her own particular bit of bad news (lab tests over the next few days, joy), she'd feel like drinking if she hadn't been underage and seen all the stupid things it made Starks do.

Even Christmas food made her wonder if it was going to be the last time she'd get to taste anything.

Anya had gotten the usual--one lecture free mistake coupon--and she'd bought for her closer friends, but it was not her happiest holiday.

The lecture free mistake coupon usually lasted about a week before Anya had to use it. Though this year she was going to try to go two weeks before she had to use it.

Anya got Toni a charm bracelet with a horseshoe charm on it because sometimes they needed all the luck they could get. Toni also got a coupon for one favor no matter what it was.

He was home. Understandably, with all things being equal (eighty-six thousand tests being run by Docs McCoy, Pym, Foster, and others), he hadn't had any opportunity to Christmas shop.

He'd almost forgotten how much he'd missed his parents. How much he'd missed his friends. How much he'd missed things like reliable indoor plumbing and a guaranteed three meals a day.

Nearly two years older, maimed, and given to nightmares...

It was still home.

Steve being home was gift enough for Anya. She had missed him so much in the past four months.

Anya didn't know if he was going to be back for Christmas or not, but she had shopped and worked on presents. She made him new arrows. Including one with a microfilament net, one with an EM pulse, one with some knock out gas, one with ultrasonics in it and one with a flare that could temporarily blind people.

In addition to the arrows she gave him a coupon for a week with her anywhere in the world he wanted to go.

Right now, Steve was pretty comfortable with good old non-bombed out ruin of a city New York. After so much constant fighting, he wasn't sure he knew how to relax again.

"Love you," he told Anya.

"I love you, Mr. Barton," she said as she looked at him. "How are you dealing with the shock of Stevie?"

He shrugged. "Wouldn't know. I've been told about her, but haven't actually seen her yet. I think she's avoiding me."

"It's understandable," Anya said. "It's a really weird situation. I met her a family dinner so you can imagine how that went. She's been kind of avoiding the family altogether.

"Don't know if I'd do any better," Steve admitted. "I mean, James and Eliza both settled in pretty remarkably well, all things considered."

"I've been told she's a lot like me. Or like I was two years ago."

"Yeah," she said. She wasn't going to tell him about breaking down in tears when she first met Stevie because she reminded him so much of Steve.

"She is," Anya said. The whole different time passing thing for him was weird, but it was how things went sometimes. "She likes cars and working on them. Wise mouth too according to James. It's almost as if there's no Stark in her at all."

Anya grinned. "It's sort of like the Starks and Rhodeses. There is another one from that dimension. A kid of Hank and Jan's. She's not so social from what I hear and thinks we're all a bunch of mean people."

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

[info]swashbuckler
2010-12-26 02:14 am UTC (link)
"Not surprising, actually," Steve said. He'd spent what time he hadn't spent with his family getting caught up. "Girl walks into a tree and James and the gang can't even ask if she's okay before asking for ID?"

He shook his head. "I understand being careful. I saw danger around every corner there. Caution saves lives. But super-villains aren't usually clumsy."

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

[info]anyastark

"How clumsy a person is isn't a basis on determining if they're friendly or not. Mom has some good stories about Stilt-Man." Anya shook her head. "After all that's happened in the past two years, it's better to err on the side of caution. If what's-her-face thinks the Avengers are mean, she can think that and she can talk to Irina on the Champions about going home."

"Enough of that. You're home and I'm not going to waste time talking about team dynamics. It's Christmas and we need to celebrate that and you being home."

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

[info]swashbuckler

Even with all he'd seen, Steve still had to believe it was better to err on the side of trust and risk getting burned. Trust was the watchword of the good guys. But he supposed it wasn't the time to discuss it.

He managed a weak smile. "Don't... know how much I'm fit for, but," he interrupted himself by kissing her, "you're right."

Anya returned the kiss and wrapped her arms around his neck. "I wasn't thinking about /that/...much, but it is an idea." She smiled and kissed him. "I just want to be with you. Whether it be naked and sweaty, or just some cuddling. The important thing is just being with you."

"Let's go with cuddling for now," Steve said, putting his flesh and blood arm around her.

He let out a breathe he hadn't even been aware he was holding. "God. Never thought I'd get to hold you again."

Anya hugged him tightly. "I know, my love. I didn't know if you were alive or ever coming back." Anya's chest tightened and her stomach twisted at the thought. She could feel the tears starting to form in her eyes. "I never want to lose you. I'd rather die instead."

"I never gave up hope that you'd be home," she said. "There were times when I had doubts, but I never gave up hope." She pulled back a little. "You'll probably see the tabloids at some point and how I'm supposedly dating this actor. We're friends and that's it. Nothing more than him escorting me to a few events ever happened."

[info]swashbuckler

Rider Family Christmas at Grandma Gloria's was going to be great this year. Mom came up, of course. But Mac also had to consider other things. A particular card for each of the Avengers, with dried flowers for all the girls. Flowers and waterproof scarves for his second-cousins-once-removed -- red for Marrina, blue for Kassia.

And for Andrea, a nice warm Mets jacket and a sundew plant.

Aine and Luna got gifts for the team together. Lots Godiva’s Chocolate for the girls and front row Pro Wrestling Tickets for the boys.

Aine got Luna a couple bottles of her favorite wine and some cheese with a gift card to their favorite Italian food place.
