The Vernard Boys and The Alchemical Architecture Upholding Termites' Test
Vincent was, all things considered, in a good mood. Applying alchemical principles had proven most effective in the theoretical models for his nanites, even if it disqualified the work from any mass distribution. Still, he was proud of it, and looked forward to this first lab test. Particularly since Kristoff was working with him. Despite some of the more mind-numbing parts, he'd been quite happy with resuming their lessons together.

Kristoff was quite happy that something had kept Vincent's attention for this long. He had the lab all set for the testing today.

"Thank you for your help in the assembly of the prototypes, and for recommending collaborating with Miss Stark." Vincent quipped, spot-checking a few details on the model. Lincoln Logs, of all things, provided a fairly suitable basic structure, along with some straw mats cut apart to replicated thatched roofs.

"I'm very confident this should work." He moves back to a control panel for the robotic arms that would execute the delivery of the nanites and alchemical solution. Vincent had little to fear for his own physiology, but it was a matter of protocol.

Damn straight they were going to follow protocol.

"Excellent. And you're very welcome. She's extremely talented; how did you like working with her?"

"She's very intelligent, and driven. More interested in practicality than just the science of it." He shrugs.

Starks. Go figure.

"She had some valid points about cost-efficiency, but I'd think when it comes to preserving things like castles and wonders of the ancient world, anything that works is worth it. She also mentioned showing the design concepts to her father, and I got the idea for some larger scale drone uses in the course of our discussion. Mining, possibly construction." He puts on his lab goggles, passing Kristoff his own pair.

"I'm looking forward to where her work in zero point energy goes. The oil companies will have a fit, if she can make it more cost-effective." He smirks, perhaps a little bit of scadenfraude sneaking into his expression. "Overall, her contributions to the code work were most welcome."

"And she has the corporate capacities to know where to go from there in the American legal and financial system," Kristoff notes sagely. He'd never been good at that part; just sold the plans to others.

He puts on his glasses. "Let us see how Lincolnlog House 1 fares."

"Initiating nanite solution." Vincent presses a switch, and a petri dish is placed on the table with the house. The lid is opened by a robot arm, and the tiny mass of what looks like colloidial metal within begins moving.

Vincent presses a canine into his lower lip as he watches it move towards the point on the model which its current assignment designates to start at.

"Cohesion and direction successful." Kristoff liked to count off things that worked. Then, if the whole thing didn't work, you were more likely to know when it stopped working.

"Matter dissipation... proceeding well." A magnified view showed the nanites working together to open a tunnel into the structure. "Nanites are following projected tunnels."

"Excellent!" Dr. Vernard flashed his brother a quick smile.

Vincent smiles and nods, but remains focused. "Some deviations in specified pathway depths, but nothing that would compromise the structure." He grunts, taking down a notation.

A minute or two later, and the nanites return to the petri dish, which is sealed once again.

"Phase 1 concluded. Proceeding to alchemically destabilized titanium injection."

Kristoff nods. "We'll run over the deviations later." He's glad Vincent made a note. Even if they weren't causing any problems, better to know their cause.

Vincent is clearly annoyed it wasn't a flawless test, but switches to another control panel as he mans the injection array.

"The destabilized--" the alchemical procedure actually labeled it 'sundered', but Vincent was trying to stick to more clinical terminology "--titanium should maintain extremely low viscosity but high cohesion. We shouldn't have to worry about any spilling or clogs."

The syringe for the injector lowers into position over one of the upper corners, where the nanites began. A stream of what looks like mercury flows forth. In hardly any time, the tunnels are flooded, the last drop or two sitting atop the opening.

"Excellent." Kristoff knows what sundered means in many magical contexts, but he knows Vincent is trying to keep things clinical to avoid highlighting his brothers weakness, and he appreciates that.

After withdrawing the injector, Vincent gives Kristoff a glance which states that he's about to break typical procedure, but there's no helping it, as this is a very atypical experiment.

He walks over and extends a finger, almost touching the liquid.

"That which was undone, now be made right once more. Arceus novium electos cerdius." The incantation seems to make Vincent's voice resonate briefly, creating the faintest tingle of otherness to anyone nearby. There is no ceremony though, no flash of eldritch force or burst of divine light.

Vincent pauses, then produces a pair of tongs from his tool-kit. He extends one side in through the doorway of the model, pinching a wall between them. He raises his arm, and where the structure would have fallen apart into the toy blocks minutes earlier, it is all thoroughly welded together from within.

"Doctor Vernard... we have a success." Mister Vernard states as he sets the house back down, smiling.

Vincent just continues smiling and looks over the model for a bit more before setting it back down.

"It worked." He re-states the obvious. He's very pleased with this whole course of events. He worked hard on this, and even if it's not something he can introduce to the mass-market, he's proud of it.

"Do you think we're ready to proceed to a field test after we isolate the deviations in the tunneling?"
