Due Diligence
A pair of uniformed officers arrive at the Whedon residence around noon, knocking sharply at the door.

"This is the police!" The older of the two officers hollers.

DJ is dressed in lounge pants and a Rage Against the Machine t-shirt, and holding a large mug of heavily caffeinated tea when he comes to the door, and looking kind of bleary eyed. Noon is only a bit after waking up time.

He opens the door a crack. "Hmm?"

Pauline is sitting in the kitchen with a glass of lemonade.

A man in his early thirties and a woman in her late twenties, both of them fit, both of them attractive, stand there. The woman speaks first, as the man cranes his neck to try to see past DJ.

"Good afternoon, young man. I'm Detective Hagen, this is Detective McSweeden. We're following up on a report we received of someone on your fire escape last night, and unusual noises from the residence."

DJ blinks. "No one I'm aware of. I've turned the music down since the last noise complaint - so that's probably it. Please give me the citation and report numbers and let me see your badges?"

Pauline stays in the kitchen, barely peeking out a little.

Police shouldn't make her uncomfortable. That was silly. But for some reason...

The male shakes his head. "No citation, son. Just checking in.

Our precinct is taking the recent outbreak in mutant crime very seriously, and we just want to make sure we're doing our due diligence."

"I assure you, I take it very seriously too. To the degree that I'd still like the report number, correct spelling of both of your names and to see your badges, please - so that there is absolutely no mistake when my mother follows up with district and state authorities and adds our information to the report in order to help your investigation. I'm very glad to hear that you take crime directed towards mutants so seriously."

Pauline loved DJ so much. What did a noise/intrusion concern report on a house that wasn't actually in mutant town have to do with the recent problems?

The male detective seems to bristle slightly, but the female puts a hand on his arm as she manages to catch sight of Pauline.

"Of course." She replies evenly, as she and DJ exchange the requisite information. "We always welcome the aid of any concerned citizen."

"And there's plenty to be concerned about." McSweeden adds. "What with the rumors of mutant gang activity and MGH harvesters. Scary how easy it is for someone to go missing. You have a nice day now, kids."

And the officers leave.

And when DJ gets around to checking his voice-mail, he'll find a message from Julian.

DJ writes everything down, including a word for word transcript of the conversation. Not enough for grounds on intimidation, but if there's further issues, it can't hurt, even if its just his word. And it makes sure they know he's taking notes, as well as being a very physical presence in the doorway between them and Pauline.
Despite that, he's carefully very polite and by the book, asking them a question for every two questions they get out, sticking to questions he knows they're legally required to answer, so they can't get into a 'good cop-bad cop' or 'interrogation room' vibe.

"Gang activity and drug dealers are a definite problem, I agree. Good day, detectives." he offers before closing the door.

He calls his mother and leaves a recording, noting the conversation word for word, with the officers' names, report number and the rest. His second call is a routine, checking in with the police as a concerned citizen to get all the reports on the complaints - when they were filed, who called them in if its available and so on - so that the police will have it on record that he called /immediately/ after the officers left, still going by the book.

Then he calls Julian third.

"I don't know yet. But either that guy is anti-mutant, or is of the redneck school of cops who think that asking for a report number equals not respecting his authority. They don't like you, and the report was filed anonymously, which is a bullshit excuse in this neighborhood. They were also talking to me, but looking at you... they wanted someone they could try to intimidate - at a guess. I'm hoping Julian has something more - someone may just be trying to give the show some bad press or link one of us to MGH."

"I was just going to ask you to do that. It seems Lisa also had a run-in with someone, but not the police. They tried to kill, but settled for a warning when that didn't work out." Julian says.

"She and Pauline were investigating the recent upsurge in MGH use and corruption in the police department. Whoever went after Lisa knew where she lived. Did these officers try to intimidate you? Did you get names or badge numbers?" Julian asks.

"Don't ask for badge numbers. The media loves it, but its almost meaningless. There was no citation issued, but I have both report numbers - for the initial call in and the dispatch. Since the call came last night... anonymous, supposedly, and the visit came today, almost sequential report numbers are highly suspicious. It'd mean there was almost no other crime in this area code in 14 hours. I also have the names of both officers - and called the station. They were sent by someone higher up directly, not dispatch. The trail ends there... but already, that's two strikes against this being on the up and up."

Badge numbers. Feh.

Julian listens as DJ explains the encounter and what it means.

"Have you turned this information over to your mother, yet? The officers themselves may not be a part of what's going on around there, but whoever sent them either is or knows who is. But if we make too much noise, they might decide to try a more direct approach, at least where Pauline is concerned." Julian says.

"Can I get the names of those officers?" he asks.

DJ passes on the names, making sure that Julian has the spellings and all.

"I called her before calling you. Right after I called the local police district to get the report information. If they're not part of what's going on, then someone who is has fingers in the police department. The guy was probably anti-mutant, or a southern bred cop. He bristled when I knew what information they're required to provide and didn't let them interrogate a victim. The woman is smarter. They're real cops - I confirmed that too, and they were given orders to come out to our place. Just not by dispatch. There was also a call in to the station so they have a log of the suspicious noises and all, but I seriously doubt that call came in when they said."

He glances Pauline's direction. "We have a show tonight. Don't worry, I'm not letting her out of my sight."

Julian makes sure to get the spellings correct and makes a decision as DJ speaks. He's going to have someone look into this, off the books.

"Thank you, DJ. If, at anytime, you feel that you need more back-up, call me and we'll assemble the team." Julian says.

DJ considers. "We have a show tonight... and I'm spinning after that. About as visible as it gets. If we're trying to avoid being watched, we'll be no help. I can keep an eye on Pauline... do what you're going to do, and don't worry about us right now."

hint: we'll be a giant distraction, tonight would be a good time for sneaky people to poke around.

He glances back, then scribbles on Pauline's note: 'How do you feel about performing a new song tonight?'
