Don't YOU feel like a jerk? (Lyta)
Austin Caine wakes up the morning after the Auction, his head full of rocks and his mouth feeling like cotton. He'd gone almost two years without a drunken bender of any kind and he couldn't, for the life of him, remember why he'd wanted to get drunk. He was better than this.

Getting wasted like that was something Tommy would do.

At some point in his musings, he becomes aware of another body in the bed next to him. Austin takes a deep breath, because he doesn't remember meeting anyone last night, though his body quickly informs that, yes he did, in fact, do /that/ last night. He's afraid to look over at the person next to him, because he doesn't know if this is someone he just happened to meet or if this one of "those" type of fans, and if he's about to walk into some kind of lawsuit, all because...

...why? Why did he do this? Austin lies back and thinks over what happened last night that would lead to him trying to blowtorch his life.

He'd gone to the Auction, ladies bid upon him. Someone won. He had conversations with a few people in the audience before he went on stage. After the auction, he'd happened to look at his phone to check the news.

Suddenly, it all came back to him.

Anya got married. To Steve. Austin, unthinking, left the auction and the girl he was supposed to take out.

He'd gone to the bar, started drinking, and even called his mother for the first time in years. Then someone else walked in.

The rest, as they say, is history.

"Goddamnit, Tommy. You've gone and done it this time." he sighs, reaching for his phone. Checking it, he finds that there are fifteen calls and thirty texts from Darren, his agent. He cycles through the texts, each a bit more confused and irritated than the last. Austin knew he forgot to do something. The messages are from Darren, his mother, Sarah, and his brother, Jerry.

He erases them all.

This is not good.

After getting some coffee and a shower, Austin calls Darren to get an idea of how bad things currently are.

He finds out that things are pretty bad. Austin's accused of ditching out on one heiress because he lost another. For once, the papers got something right.

"Darren, can you get that woman's name and number for me? I want to call and personally apologize for bein' an ass." Austin says.

"I hope you've got some magic left up your sleeves, bud. What were you thinking, man?" he asks.

"Did you know about Anya getting married, Darren?" he asks.

Silence on the other end of the line. Then:

"Austin, I was trying to get you through the night, man. We didn't need a scene or anything--"

"Just get me the name and number, Darren. Thanks." Austin says, before hanging up.

"Lyta Worthington," came the voice when he dialed the number given to him.

"Good morning, ma'am. My name is Austin Caine. We were supposed to meet at the Charity Auction last night, but I exited the event without thankin' you for biddin' on me." Austin says.

"I apologize for that. There's no defense for my actions and I'm sorry if I offended you in any way. I received some news that really threw me for a loop and I should have explained that before I left." he says.

"If you can find a way to accept my apology, I'd like to discuss with you a way to remedy this situation." he says.

Oh. Him. Celebrity jerk that ditched Sylvie.

"Actually, Mr. Caine, it wasn't me that you left behind to do whatever it was you needed to do. I intended the date to go to one of my close friends."

She sighed. "But...if you aren't planning on running off again, I'm sure we can discuss something to fix this."

If Austin felt like an ass before, he felt even worse now. He'd ruined someone's gift to her friend, which probably bothered the friend even more. This was how guys like Charlie Sheen and others got bad reputations among fans.

His reputation was the least of his worries, though. His mother raised him to treat women with respect, and he'd managed to fail at that three times in 24 hours. He still doesn't even know the name of the girl that was in his bed when he woke up.

She'd be even more ashamed of him than she is now, and Austin can't let that stand.

"I do not plan to run off again, Miss Worthington. I would like to take your friend out on the date I should have taken her out on last night.

In fact, if you and she agree to it, I'd like to speak with her and offer the same apology I'm offerin' to you. She didn't deserve my poor treatment anymore than you did and I'd like to make amends for that." he says.

"I'm sure she'd like an explanation," Lyta said. She smiled a little. "A re-do date might not be a bad idea, though I'm sure your busy."

"Actually, I've got a couple of weeks before I have to be in Chicago to start filming my new movie, so I've got some time to hang out and make my apology really good." Austin says.

"Do you know if she likes flowers?" he asks.

After Austin hung up with Lyta, he took a deep breath and relaxed. He spoke to the girl he'd ended up with, got her name and number, and arranged a ride home for her. He tried to be as respectful as possible and explain that he didn't usually do this sort of thing.

After that was handled, he picked up the phone and dialed Sylvia's number.

He hoped she would be as understanding as Lyta.

Sylvie was dangling from her trapeze with two hands and banging on her drum with the other when the phone rang. She switched both drumsticks to one hand and reached for the phone.

"Hello. Sylvie McCoy speaking."

"Good afternoon, Miss McCoy. My name is Austin Caine." the voice on the other end says in drawl that could barely be more Southern if it tried.

"We were supposed to meet after the Auction the other day, but I stepped out after the bidding. I'm callin' to apologize first, for my hasty exit with no explanation. I did not mean to offend you or Miss Worthington with my insensitivity.

I could tell you the reason I left, but it's not excuse for the way I treated you, your friend and the event. For that, I apologize." Austin says.

"Secondly, I would like to know if you'd consider givin' me a chance to prove to you that I'm not the man you were exposed to. I would like to, at your convenience, have a date with you." he says.

"We can do anything you find interestin'." he tells her.

Sylvie's a bit taken aback by this. "Apology accepted, Mr. Caine. Things happen. Although, to be perfectly honest, I'd assumed you'd just figured out Lyta wasn't bidding for herself and -- but never mind, that's silly. Anyway, how do you feel about MoMA? I love it there; the ramps are all conveniently placed and they're showing 'Nostalgia for the Light' this week.

"Oh, that's excellent. People say my accent is strange, but a lot of them either willfully ignore the New York accent or just haven't heard it." he laughs.

"Would you mind terribly if I stopped by to make my apology in person, would you, Miss McCoy?" Austin asks.

About an hour later, there is a ring at the gate. Austin had heard of Xavier's school for the gifted, but he didn't really know anything about it except that it was a fancy private school.

Translation: Somewhere he'd /never/ have had the money to go to as a kid.

He holds the bouquet of hibiscuses at the ready to give Sylvie when she arrives.

And as soon as he was let into the gate, Sylvie climbed into her chair and met him at the front door.
