Austin Caine wakes up the morning after the Auction, his head full of rocks and his mouth feeling like cotton. He'd gone almost two years without a drunken bender of any kind and he couldn't, for the life of him, remember why he'd wanted to get drunk. He was better than this.

Getting wasted like that was something Tommy would do.

At some point in his musings, he becomes aware of another body in the bed next to him. Austin takes a deep breath, because he doesn't remember meeting anyone last night, though his body quickly informs that, yes he did, in fact, do /that/ last night. He's afraid to look over at the person next to him, because he doesn't know if this is someone he just happened to meet or if this one of "those" type of fans, and if he's about to walk into some kind of lawsuit, all because...

...why? Why did he do this? Austin lies back and thinks over what happened last night that would lead to him trying to blowtorch his life.

He'd gone to the Auction, ladies bid upon him. Someone won. He had conversations with a few people in the audience before he went on stage. After the auction, he'd happened to look at his phone to check the news.

Suddenly, it all came back to him.

Anya got married. To Steve. Austin, unthinking, left the auction and the girl he was supposed to take out.

He'd gone to the bar, started drinking, and even called his mother for the first time in years. Then someone else walked in.

The rest, as they say, is history.

"Goddamnit, Tommy. You've gone and done it this time." he sighs, reaching for his phone. Checking it, he finds that there are fifteen calls and thirty texts from Darren, his agent. He cycles through the texts, each a bit more confused and irritated than the last. Austin knew he forgot to do something. The messages are from Darren, his mother, Sarah, and his brother, Jerry.

He erases them all.

This is not good.

	About an hour later, there is a ring at the gate. Austin had heard of Xavier's school for the gifted, but he didn't really know anything about it except that it was a fancy private school. Translation: Somewhere he'd /never/ have had the money to go to as a kid. He holds the bouquet of hibiscuses at the ready to give Sylvie when she arrives. (Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

"I reckon you're teasin' me on that, Sylvie. You seem like the kind of girl that doesn't have trouble gettin' dates...when guys aren't bein' jerks, at least." Austin says.

They arrive in the garden and Austin looks around, visibly relaxing.

"I always wanted a big house with a garden like this." Austin says.

"What do you study here, if you don't mind me askin'?" Austin asks.

"Well, I graduated the high school program a few years ago. Now I've been taking advantage of the capacity for college courses here. Majors in linguistics and anthropology, minors in biology and nonprofit business." Sylvie grins sheepishly. "Biology was kinda a requirement. Mom's an MD and dad's a geneticist/biochemist. There'd have been sad puppy eyes if I didn't at least do a minor."

Austin blinks. He knows that all of those words mean sciences he's never heard of and couldn't possible comprehend and Sylvie's studying them earns her a bit more respect in his estimation.

"Wow, you sure you weren't sent to take over the world? That's a lot of college to go to. Did you enjoy it?" he asks.

He never went to college, which was one of his few regrets in life. Not like he'd have been smart enough to get in, but Austin realizes now that he should have at least tried.

Austin didn't know what he expected before meeting Sylvie, but she was nice and funny. He's a little confused at the "more than six fingers" bit because as far as he sees, she's only got five.

Not too many people can make movie references so obscure that even /he/ doesn't place them.

"Your accent is very good. Women who speak more than one language get extra points in my book." Austin says.

"How is your Russian, though?"" he asks.
